Strata takes a planetary, lunar, or solar capture from raw video to a finished image in one native macOS app: frame quality analysis, multi-point alignment, stacking, derotation, wavelet sharpening, color, and export, every heavy stage on the GPU through Metal. A workflow that has meant several Windows tools and a virtual machine runs here as one guided pipeline.
IMPORT
- SER video, the standard planetary capture format
- The uncompressed RAW8 AVI subset written by ZWO ASIAir and ASICap
- Already-stacked images (16-bit TIFF, PNG, JPEG, FITS) enter directly at Sharpen
- Truncated captures are recovered, not rejected: every complete frame is read and counted
- SER Utility: a health report on any SER file, and a repaired copy for the faults that can be fixed
EQUIPMENT
- Profiles for telescope, Barlow or reducer, camera, and filters, with focal ratio, image scale, and field of view computed live
- Each capture remembers the rig it was shot through; Laminar captures fill this in automatically
- Strata spends those numbers: drizzle advice matched to your aperture and wavelength, and a deconvolution PSF sized from your equipment
ANALYZE
- GPU frame quality scoring across every frame in a capture
- An interactive selection curve: set your keeper percentage against the data rather than a guess
- Keep the top percentage or a fixed frame count for consistent noise across a sequence
- Normalize Capture, an optional hygiene pass for brightness or level drift
BATCH ANALYSIS
- Score a whole night of captures at once and rank them in a single comparison table
- Quality curves, usable frame counts, and a suggested selection per file, side by side; export as CSV
STACKING
- Three methods: Strata Warp, the default; Strata Warp+ for fine surface detail; Simple Average for speed
- Strata Warp aligns globally, then refines local shifts at every alignment point, correcting seeing distortion across the frame
- Strata Warp+ ranks frames at every alignment point by local sharpness, so each region keeps its own sharpest moments
- Automatic alignment point placement, filtering, and sizing, with Balanced and Poor Seeing profiles
- Drizzle super-resolution at 1.5x, 2x, and 3x for undersampled captures
SHARPENING
- Three engines: 6-layer wavelets, Wiener deconvolution with a modeled PSF, and Solar Tone
- Multiple wavelet passes, so fine detail can be drawn out gradually rather than forced in one step
- Micro Contrast for sub-pixel detail
- Work in Luminance or per-channel RGB, and choose which channels build luminance
- Real-time GPU preview, with Original, Enhanced, and split Comparison views
DEROTATION
- Combine several captures of one planet into a cleaner image than any single one can give
- Saturn gets a physical model: ring angle, tilt, and disk size measured from the image itself, no ephemeris data needed
- Stacks of differing sizes align onto one canvas, and blending hands off seamlessly at the limb and rings
COLOR
- Automatic RGB channel alignment to correct atmospheric dispersion
- Histogram controls, saturation, and color balance
- Mineral Moon and solar color treatments
WORKFLOW
- A guided seven-phase pipeline: Import, Analyze, Stack, Derotate, Sharpen, Color, Export
- Processing profiles record every setting and replay them on other files, or on a whole folder unattended
- Export to 16-bit TIFF, PNG, JPEG, and FITS with filename templates and processing metadata
LANGUAGES
- English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese
- Translations are new: if something reads wrong, send a screenshot to support@macobservatory.com
BUILT FOR THE MAC
- Native Swift and SwiftUI, not a port
- Metal GPU acceleration throughout, optimized for Apple Silicon
- Keyboard shortcuts, light and dark appearance, and a built-in Help Book
Strata is the Process step in the Mac Observatory Suite, alongside Laminar for capture and Meridian for archiving. Each app works on its own.
Requires macOS 14.6 or later and a Metal-capable GPU.

What's new in 1.4.1
Stacking judges seeing in arcseconds, not pixels. The local-shift guard's limits are now converted at your capture's image scale, so a Barlow no longer makes the same atmosphere fail the check. A capture with no equipment attached stacks anyway when every alignment point tracked, and states what it measured under the Stack button. It still stops when tiles genuinely failed to track.
Auto AP Size now runs on the planet route too, and probes a real grid for each candidate size. A Saturn that aborted at 50% invalid points now picks a smaller size and stacks. The grid you see is the grid that stacks.
Derotation works on Intel Macs with a discrete GPU. On a Radeon Pro 570X every image but the reference was rejected with "Brightness validation failed". Fixed. If you have one of these Macs, this is the build to try.
Analyze diagnoses say what was measured. "Target leaves the safe frame area" is gone; the groups are named by the measurement behind them, and the shrunken-disc, coverage crop and cancelled-reference messages state facts and figures instead of guessing a cause.
Batch: the still-image batch takes its output format, bit depth and filename from the profile, exactly as the video batch does. A file whose detected target differs from the profile's now gets a warning in the log, the results and the CSV. Never a silent switch.
Every string added since 1.3.2 is translated in German, Italian, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
Frame ranking is unchanged from 1.4.0.
