• The app now opens on its tree while the dictionaries come up, shedding leaves that fall under real gravity and air resistance rather than along a drawn path. On most launches you will barely see it. • Opening is quicker. Counting what the sources cover — ten passes over a 120 MB dictionary — used to happen three times at every launch, for a screen reached from Privacy & sources. It is now counted when you open that screen. • Unpacking the dictionary after an update no longer holds the whole thing in memory, which is what made the first launch stutter on older iPhones.

• Sending feedback is quicker. The source details a report carries now sit behind a heading you can open if you want to check them, so the box you write in is right there when the sheet opens. Everything that was sent before is still sent. • Opening the app after an update no longer rebuilds its dictionaries when nothing in them has changed. Installing this version does it one last time; the updates after it start quickly. • While the sources are still loading, the search box says so rather than looking ready. You can type during it — your word runs as soon as the sources are up.

• After a few lookups that turn up a word's history, the app may ask once whether you'd rate it. It asks rarely, never at launch, and never after a word it couldn't find.

Read on a light background. The button beside the text-size controls switches between dark, light, and matching your iPhone's own setting — so the app no longer has to be dark in daylight. Added after a reader asked for it.

Tap any root in a word's etymology chain to see the other English words that grew from it. Looking up "school" and tapping its Latin root schola turns up schola, shul and shulgoer alongside it — one root, four words. Also: groundwork for finding the words the dictionary is still missing, so they can be added.

Feedback now sends straight from the app. Reporting a wrong etymology, a missing source, or a bug no longer needs a mail account set up on your device — write it and send it. A reply address is optional: leave it blank and your report stays anonymous. Feedback is also reachable from the main screen now, not only from a result, so you can report a problem even when a lookup isn't working. The feedback form scrolls, so longer reports and their source details stay in reach.
