flaneur is a walking navigation app that generates scenic, indirect routes — not to get you somewhere fast, but to help you truly see the city around you. Inspired by the literary tradition of the flâneur — the unhurried urban wanderer celebrated by Baudelaire, Benjamin, and Solnit — this app turns an ordinary walk into a voyage of quiet discovery.
[Two ways to wander]
• Walk nearby — Choose a duration (15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes) or a distance (1 to 10 km), and flaneur creates a circular route that begins and ends where you are. Every loop follows a different path, so the same neighborhood always has something new to reveal.
• Set destination — Going somewhere? flaneur will take you there, just not directly. Enter an address or drop a pin, and the app plots a scenic detour through streets you might never have found on your own.
[A route that learns from your walks]
flaneur remembers where you've been. Routes you walked recently are gently avoided so that each new walk covers fresh ground. Start from the same spot every morning, and the app will keep steering you somewhere new.
[Navigate your way]
Switch freely between three navigation views while you walk: a bold direction arrow for glance-and-go simplicity, a map overlay that layers instructions onto the live map, or a classic map view with a compact info bar. Voice guidance announces every turn — toggle it on when you need it, off when you'd rather listen to the city.
[Your walk, at a glance]
A Live Activity on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island keeps the next turn visible without unlocking your phone. Direction arrow, distance, step count, and ETA — everything you need is right there.
[At the end of the walk]
flaneur shows you how far you went, how long you walked, and how many steps you took. Then it offers a fresh quote from the literary canon of walking — a small reminder of why wandering matters.

A pure black interface with clean serif typography feels at home on dark streets and bright screens alike. No clutter, no ads, no accounts. Just you and the walk.
*A note on route generation
flaneur builds each route in real time using Apple Maps. Because the app queries mapping services to find walkable streets and assemble a unique path, generating or regenerating a route may take a few moments — and if you regenerate several times in a row, a short cooldown may apply before the next route is ready. This is a natural consequence of crafting one-of-a-kind walks rather than serving pre-made paths, and the wait is usually no more than a few seconds. A perfect moment to stretch, lace up your shoes, or grab a drink for the road.
**A note on safety
flaneur was designed and tested on the streets of Tokyo — a city known for its exceptional walkability and safety. The app generates routes algorithmically using Apple Maps data and does not evaluate the safety or suitability of any particular street or neighborhood.
When using flaneur in other cities or unfamiliar areas, please exercise the same judgment you would on any walk: stay aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and choose your own path whenever a suggested route doesn't feel right. You are always free to switch to the shortest route home, or simply end your session.
