First Thought Best Thought is a practice tool for spontaneous writing.
"You're a Genius all the time." This is Jack Kerouac's twenty-ninth essential for modern prose, and the animating conviction behind FTBT.
The premise is not that creativity must be learned, but that it must be released; that the ordinary mind, caught in the act of noticing, is already doing something extraordinary.
This is not a journaling app or a writing workshop. It is a practice tool closer in spirit to a meditation timer, or a musical improvisation.
HOW IT WORKS
Set your daily frequency and your waking window. Prompts arrive at irregular intervals; you can neither predict them nor rehearse for them. Whatever state of mind you are in when the prompt arrives is your Genius of the moment.
Every prompt is timed, and the backspace key is disabled. You move forward through language rather than circling back to manage appearances. When the timer expires, the piece is finished — you can keep it, share it, or discard it, but you cannot edit it.
Kept pieces accumulate in a private archive on your device. The prompts are drawn from eight creative traditions: Beat sketching, Fluxus instruction pieces, Oulipo language constraints, Dada chance operations, Surrealist inquiry, Oblique reframings, memory and dream exercises, and Boal de-mechanization.
SHARING
If you choose, you can share a finished piece through your device's share sheet as a formatted card. The app never pressures you to share, never rewards sharing with streaks or badges, and never shows metrics about how a piece performed.
NOTHING ELSE
No social feed. No accounts. No AI assistance. No analytics. No gamification. Your writing stays on your device.
The assumption is that you already possess what Kerouac called "the song of yourself." "This app does not teach technique; it creates the conditions under which technique becomes unnecessary."
