Nostalgex
Plex, Jellyfin & Emby live TV
Only for Apple TV
Free · In‑App Purchases
New: a channel for every film series in your library, and optional iCloud sync across your Apple TVs.
Nostalgex turns your Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby media library into live TV. No more scrolling through thousands of titles trying to pick something. Just turn it on and flip through channels.
Your movies and shows are organized into themed channels like a real cable TV lineup. Rewatchables, Saturday Morning Cartoons, 90s Sitcoms, Kids and Family, Action, Comedy, Reality TV, Game Shows, and dozens more. Each channel runs on a continuous schedule, so there's always something playing when you tune in.
How it works:
• Connect to your Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby server
• Pick your channel packages in Settings
• Start watching
Channels are built from what is actually in your library. If you have it on your server, it can show up on a channel. Nothing is streamed from the internet. Everything plays from your own server.
Features:
• 131 themed channels in 14 bundles
• Franchise channels: every film series in your library gets its own channel, each with its own switch
• Collection channels built from the collections on your server
• Retro mode with CRT scanlines and 4:3 aspect ratio
• EPG-style channel guide with live schedules
• Channel surfing with Siri Remote swipe gestures
• Full screen playback with channel OSD
• Mini channel guide overlay
• Kids and family safe channels (R-rated content auto-filtered)
• Customize your lineup by toggling channel packages on and off
• Optional iCloud sync keeps every Apple TV in your home on the same lineup
• Report Playback shows what you're watching on your server without cluttering your Continue Watching row
• TMDB and IMDb data for smarter channel curation
• Free, with an optional tip jar
Requires a Plex Media Server, Jellyfin Server, or Emby Server running on your local network. Free Plex account works.
more Franchises, iCloud sync, tips, and big libraries that stay put.
New:
- FRANCHISES finds the film series in your library, from Star Wars to American Pie, and gives each one its own channel with its own switch in Settings.
- Your server's collections are filed as FRANCHISES or OTHER COLLECTIONS. NOTABLE STARS is gone.
- iCloud sync, off until you turn it on in Settings under CONNECTION. Every Apple TV on your Apple ID then shares the same lineup and settings.
- REPORT PLAYBACK shows what you're watching in Now Playing on your server and counts a real watch, and never fills your Continue Watching row.
- A tip jar in Settings: Popcorn, TV Dinner and Pizza Night. Nostalgex stays free and tips unlock nothing.
- Jellyfin and Emby: FIND SERVERS ON MY NETWORK fills in your server's address for you.
- When a programme won't play, a card on the channel tells you why.
Fixed:
- Very large libraries no longer crash right after the guide appears.
- Plex films keep their full titles, so Spider-Man no longer shows up as Man.
- Plex films with more than one version, or split across several files, play the right version and the right part.
- Emby libraries load again, and switching from Plex to Emby or Jellyfin works.
- Jellyfin: MP4 files saved with an .mkv name now play.
- More channels fill up from TMDB and IMDb data, and film series stay on channels that fit their genre.
Thanks to @w6trp for four pull requests in this release, and to everyone who sent in a bug report.
1.0.26 Oct 14
It is October, so Nostalgex now has a Halloween package, and changing channels works properly again.
- SCREAM, a Halloween package of four channels: SCREAM KIDS, FRIGHT NIGHT, SCREAM ADULTS and NOSTALGEX HORROR. The guide offers it during October and puts it at the top of your lineup for the month. Kids first, so nobody lands on a slasher by accident. You can switch it on any month from Settings.
- TIS THE SEASON is ready for December: HOLIDAZE, SANTA'S LIST, NAUGHTY LIST, NOSTALGEX CHRISTMAS, HALLMARK, plus CHRISTMAS SPECIALS and KIDS CHRISTMAS TV, which find the festive episodes of shows you already own.
- Eleven new channels in all, including DVD SHELF, HISTORY & BIO, and Y2K COMEDY, Y2K SITCOMS and Y2K TOONS for 2000 to 2009.
- Channel numbers are now one unbroken run per package, and music videos move to 200 and up.
Playback:
- Changing channels no longer restarts the programme or plays whatever was queued next. Tuning joins what is actually on, where it actually is.
- Films where your server has to re-encode both the video and the audio no longer stop after about twenty seconds.
- Dolby Vision films your server refuses to convert now play.
- When a server cannot keep up with a file, the same film continues at 1080p instead of freezing.
- Music video channels fill themselves in properly, and the decade channels sort by the right year.
Connecting:
- Jellyfin and Emby: typing just your server's IP finds it on port 8096, and local addresses, VPNs and Tailscale work.
- The guide scrolls smoothly while the library loads, and the Menu button always takes you back.
Settings shows the last playback failure under RESCAN LIBRARY. If something will not play, that line is the most useful thing you can send us.
1.0.23 Oct 7
Nostalgex is now open source, and Jellyfin sign-in got a lot easier.
- Nostalgex is open source. The app, the web tuner and the channel rules are on GitHub: github.com/chadMueller/Nostalgex
- Jellyfin and Emby: typing just your server's IP now finds it on port 8096 automatically, and an address copied from your browser (the kind ending in /web/#/home) works too.
- A wrong server address now fails in seconds instead of a minute.
- Quick Connect says whether the server couldn't be reached or Quick Connect is switched off, instead of one message for both.
- Servers on Tailscale or another VPN (100.x addresses) can connect over plain http:// now.
- The channel guide's highlighted row is much easier to see from the couch.
- Settings has a QR code to sign up for update emails.
1.0.22 Sep 30
Channels play again.
- Fixed: many channels showed the tuning screen and never cleared, or played sound over a black picture. Anything your Plex server has to convert now starts in a couple of seconds on tvOS 26.
- Fixed: flipping channels quickly, or the app retrying a stream, could get refused by the server. The app now asks the server first, the way Plex's own players do.
- Fixed: some HEVC MP4 files played audio with no picture. They now go through the server, which sends a version the Apple TV can show.
- A file that opens but shows nothing now switches to the server stream instead of skipping the program.
- Tested on an Apple TV 4K and an older Apple TV HD against MKV, MP4, AVI, AV1, VC-1, 4K and HDR files.
1.0.21 Sep 25
Stays signed in, opens instantly.
- Fixed: the app could forget your Plex sign-in after a force quit or restart. Sign in once and it sticks.
- Fixed: every launch rebuilt the whole channel guide. The guide now comes back instantly and refreshes quietly in the background.
- Fixed: the Top Shelf on the Apple TV home screen never showed what's on now. It does.
- The refresh asks your Plex server whether anything changed before rescanning. Nothing new, no rebuild.
- Signing in again no longer discards the saved guide.
- Connect retries a flaky plex.tv call and says exactly why if it still fails.
- Settings text is bigger and brighter.
- Fixed: a movie could air twice in a row on channels with a smaller lineup.
- Playback that went black and never recovered is now caught and skipped.
1.0.20 Sep 17
What you are watching now shows up in Control Center and in the Remote app, with the channel and the poster.
Put Nostalgex in the top row of your Apple TV home screen and it shows what is on right now across your channels. Pick one and it tunes straight to it.
CRITERION was playing the wrong films. It now plays what it says it does.
Nine channels pull from a much bigger pool: BUDDIES, DATE NIGHT, RUSH, FRONT LINE, DRAMA TV, BIOPICS, FOREIGN FILMS, MIDNIGHT and CULT CLASSICS.
Channels stick to their own rules again, so cartoons stop turning up on SCI-FI.
1.0.13 Sep 5
Collections become channels. A collection on your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server now shows up as its own channel alongside the rest of the lineup.
Open in Plex sends whatever is playing straight into the Plex app.
New additions premiere at prime time, and films that come in two parts are scheduled back to back.
The lineup now refreshes every six hours instead of once a day, so things you added today can show up tonight.
Fixes: the bottom channel in the guide is selectable again, HEVC files no longer black screen on the Apple TV HD, multi-part movies on Jellyfin and Emby play straight through, and a library scan that gets interrupted keeps what it already loaded instead of starting over.
1.0.12 Sep 5
Nostalgex now works great on slow connections, not just home wifi.
Much faster library loading for big libraries, with real progress shown the whole way
New Stream Quality setting. Auto adapts to your connection so playback keeps up anywhere
Swipe down during playback for quick settings: captions, audio, sleep timer, stream quality and more. Swipe up for the mini channel guide
Movies roll straight into the next program when the credits end
Channel guide fixes: programs line up with the time header, wrap-around works again, everything is easier to read
Watching no longer fills your Plex Continue Watching row (off by default, opt in if you want it)
Fixed getting signed out after closing the app
1.0.11 Aug 21
Music videos are here, plus a bunch of new channels and playback upgrades.
Music videos now fill up the HIGH ROTATION channels, with new ones like Y2K, Current Spin, Dance Floor, Caliente, Headbangers, and Get Down. Videos in a regular movie library get picked up too, just tag them Music.
New channels: Cartoon Network, Record Store, and an Arthouse pack.
Pick your audio language. If a movie has more than one audio track, Nostalgex remembers the one you want.
Movies split across a couple files now play straight through instead of stopping halfway.
Your Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby logins stick after the Apple TV restarts. No more re-entering credentials.
Guide cleanup: smoother episode skipping, titles that stay put, a better screensaver, and a curation pass so titles land on the right channel.
1.0.10 Jul 9
Emby support is here. Along with Plex and Jellyfin, you can now connect an Emby server with your username and password.
Nostalgex now keeps Plex in the loop while you watch. Anything you play gets marked watched and shows up in your Plex history and Continue Watching, same as if you started it in Plex itself.
That's what makes your Rewatchables channels build themselves. The movies and shows you actually rewatch start showing up on their own, and Rewatchables now kicks in at 3 watches instead of 4 so the channels fill out faster.
Three new channels: Drama TV, Biopics, and Buddies (those 80s and 90s action-comedy duos). Plus a big curation pass so titles land on the right channel. Rom-coms feel like rom-coms again, real comedies stopped getting filtered out, and stuff like Happy Gilmore and Dodgeball flows where it belongs.
The lineup got reorganized too, with cleaner bundles and fresh channel numbers.
Also fixed:
The channel guide now lines up with whatever is playing right now.
Late at night the guide shows a full schedule again instead of cutting off after an hour or two.
Plex sign-in auto-fills your code when you link your account.

1.0.5 (build 12) — what's new
Channel guide got a big cleanup. The big ones:
Way faster startup. Rewrote the channel build step. Should feel noticeably quicker on first load.
Stand-up specials stay in STAND-UP. Pulled in 1,400+ comedy specials from TMDB and locked them so they stop showing up in ROM COMS, FEEL GOOD, etc.
DOCS is actually documentaries now. No more Jurassic World sneaking in via TMDB recommendations.
ANIME is actually anime. Disney, Pixar, Barbie, Donald Duck etc. are gone. Pokémon and Studio Ghibli show up reliably.
NETFLIX stopped grabbing movies it shouldn't
Christmas (HOLIDAZE) properly includes Die Hard and Daddy's Home 2.
TEEN MOVIES no longer shows Boyz N the Hood and similar.
1.0.5 Jun 1

1.0.3 May 27
A cleaner channel guide and a lineup that feels more like flipping through real TV.
• Channel numbers are easier to follow — kids, favorites, franchises, music, and more each have their own stretch of the dial
• Bundles show up in channel order, so browsing matches what you see on screen
• Franchise channels are back on the 100s where you expect them
• The REWIND bundle picks up NOSTALGEX LOL (CH 3) and Classic Fam Jams (CH 8)
• Guide layout polish: channel names stay on one line and read more clearly
After updating, run a fresh library scan on your Apple TV so your channels pick up the new lineup.
1.0.2 May 21
UPDATED NOTES:
Resubmission addressing both prior rejections:
Guideline 2.1(a): Fixed launch dead-end. When a stored Plex token returns 401 (e.g. token invalidated between sessions), the app now auto-clears credentials and routes to the sign-in screen — where the DEMO MODE button (described below) is visible.
Guideline 1.5: Updated Support URL to https://www.nostalgex.app/support — a dedicated support page with contact info and troubleshooting steps.
Quickest path to review remains: tap DEMO MODE on the first screen for bundled sample channels (no Plex required). Demo Plex account credentials are in App Review Information for the full sign-in flow.
1.0.1 May 18
