How Fast? is finally here. The tool that measures speed almost finished last, shameful. Three modes. Ground reads GPS for how fast you're actually moving, whether that's a run, a drive, or settling what that bike ride really averaged. Climb uses the barometer for how fast you're gaining height, which is the number stairs, elevators, trails and ski lifts never give you. Swing reads the gyroscope 100 times a second, and since you're holding the phone and not the racket, it's your best forehand getting clocked. Or an arm windmill contest with your friends. You'll have to make up the rules yourself. Everywhere else, a visual pass. Cleaner numbers, backdrops you can actually read against a bright camera, and a stack of small things that sat a few points out of place and bothered us more than they bothered you.

Bug fixes only this time. Nothing new to buy. Put a tool to sleep, then pull its stats up, and you'd find a card that had quietly fallen over. Fixed. The sleeping eye had its own version of the same bug, which you'd never have noticed, but our crash log did. A tape measure doesn't break unless you drop it. That's about the standard we'd like to be held to, so we went looking for the things nobody had complained about yet.

New this release: How Bright?, a light meter that reads your camera. Reflected mode measures the light bouncing off whatever you point at. Incident mode measures the light actually landing in the room, using a plain sheet of paper over the front lens as a diffuser. It looks silly and it's the honest way to do this on a phone, so it's free. Premium adds a light alert that buzzes when the room hits the level you picked, color temperature in Kelvin, and marks that remember the color alongside the number. How Loud? got a lot more accurate. We tuned the mic reading against a real calibrator, so the number you see is one you can trust, and we're honest about where your phone's mic gives up (around 104 dB, then it starts under-reading, and we say so). How Loud? also picked up a dB(A) / dB(C) switch. dB(A) is the one sound meters and hearing rules use, so it stays the default. dB(C) keeps the bass that dB(A) throws away, which is what you actually want for subwoofers, engines, and anything that rumbles. dB(C) comes with the How Loud? unlock. How Magnetic?'s Find arrow now points right at whatever's magnetic, instead of off to one side. Also: you can read any tool's help before granting it a permission, our context phrases got a fact-check (a few sound and light comparisons were off), and we fixed a crash in the sound engine. Live field reading, sonar rings that ping faster as you close in, a rising tone, and a Zero button so you hunt what's actually near you, not your phone's own guts.
