Lock the keys. Love the cat.
Cats Lock is a one-click keyboard lock for Mac, for any time you need the keys to stop for a moment. A cat on the laptop, a toddler reaching for the keyboard, or a screen that needs a wipe-down: hit the lock and carry on, without random typing, deleted documents, or a trip to System Settings.
ONE SHORTCUT, ANY APP
Press ⌘L from anywhere and Cats Lock instantly blocks every key. A customizable lock screen shows what's happening; the same shortcut releases it when you're ready. Prefer a different combo? Record your own in Settings.
SMART DETECT
Turn on Smart Detect and Cats Lock can lock itself the moment it senses keyboard chaos, so you don't have to reach for the shortcut. It runs entirely on your Mac, and you choose how sensitive it is. It stays off until you turn it on, and asks for Accessibility once when you do.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR CAT
Customize your cat's coat, muzzle, socks, markings, bowtie, name, and just the right amount of chonk. They then appear on the lock screen too.
KEEP YOUR MAC AWAKE FOR LONG JOBS
Got a long render, export, build, or backup running? Lock the keyboard and turn on Keep Mac Awake so a stray paw, or a sleeping screen, can't interrupt it. Come back hours later to find everything still running.
STEALTH LOCK FOR MEETINGS AND MOVIES
When your sidekick is encroaching, flip on Stealth Lock from the menu bar or Settings. Same keyboard blocking, no overlay, no sound. Need to take control during a meeting or screen share? Unlock just the trackpad and keep clicking while the keyboard stays locked.
LOCK THE FUNCTION ROW (OPTIONAL)
Got a cat that loves the top row? Optionally block the function keys too (F1 through F12), including Mission Control, brightness, volume, and media keys. It needs Accessibility permission and stays off until you turn it on.
LOCK THE BUILT-IN KEYBOARD
Working on an external keyboard? Lock your MacBook's built-in keyboard and let your cat sprawl out on the warm keys while you keep working. It releases the moment you unplug the external keyboard, so you're never stranded. Like the function row, this needs Accessibility permission and stays off until you turn it on.
MAKE THE LOCK SCREEN YOURS
Pick a background style, choose an icon or emoji, add a custom message, or set a favorite photo as the backdrop.
PICK YOUR DETERRENT
Choose from a range of built-in sounds, including a spoken "Warning, cat on keyboard" voice, or import your own. Sounds play on each blocked keystroke, or stay completely silent.
LOCK PROFILES
Save your go-to lock setups as profiles, each with its own mode, sounds, and lock screen, then start any of them straight from the menu bar.
LIVES IN THE MENU BAR
Cats Lock stays out of your way. Always one click from the menu bar pawprint, with a one-tap widget to lock or unlock without opening the app. Optional Hide from Dock and Launch at Login. Auto-unlocks when your screen goes to sleep so you're never locked out of your own Mac.
SPEAKS YOUR LANGUAGE
Fully localized in English, German, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese.
PRIVACY-FIRST
Cats Lock runs entirely on your Mac. No accounts, no cloud, no analytics, no data ever leaves your device. The app is fully sandboxed. The core lock needs no special permissions. The optional function-row, built-in keyboard, and Smart Detect features are the only ones that ever ask for Accessibility, and only if you choose to turn them on. When you turn one of those on, Cats Lock uses the permission only to block keys. It never reads what you type, and it never saves or sends anything. Smart Detect works entirely on your Mac and never uses Input Monitoring.
DESIGNED FOR CAT PEOPLE, LOVED BY MANY MORE
Made by a cat owner who got tired of his cat rewriting documents in real time, then shaped by feedback from parents, keyboard cleaners, and everyone who needs the keys to hold still.
REQUIREMENTS
macOS 13.1 (Ventura) or later. Apple Silicon and Intel Macs supported.
This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
So useful beyond just cat protection!
More than cats
Yes, this is good to keep cats and kids from banging on keyboards. But more importantly I find myself using the function to prevent sleep mode while locked so that I can walk away when systems are running and I know they won’t be disturbed. I know there are hotkeys for that but I ALWAYS forget them. Having this in the toolbar is CLUTCH!

🫶 So glad it's helping. Thanks!
Shortcut Conflicts with Browser Shortcut
WJV4
This app has an underlying hardware and shortcut conflict for a mac desktop, magic keyboard, and magic mouse—the browser tabs steal the ⌘L key so the app shortcut does not work. You have to grab your mouse, travel all the way up to the menu bar header, open the drop-down menu, and click the Enable button to activate the app—unless I’m missing something. It would be much better if the shortcut was something no widely used with-in native apple shortcuts.
Developer Response
Hi WJV4, thanks for the detailed feedback. The browser conflict you describe was a real issue on v1.0.0, and it's exactly what v1.1.0 addresses. The Lock shortcut now works system-wide, so ⌘L fires even from inside Safari or Chrome. The app claims the keystroke at the system level before the browser can intercept it.If you update through the App Store and still see the conflict, please email meow@catslock.app and I'll dig in. v1.1.0 also adds a customizable shortcut in Settings if you'd rather pick something other than ⌘L. Any combo with Command, Option, or Control works.Todd
Genius app idea!

What a great idea for an app! Easy to use and sits in the menu bar. It keeps my cat off my keyboard with its warnings and I no longer send accidental emails to my boss asking for a raise!
Can’t live without it!

Incredible, simple app. The keyboard shortcut alone has helped me avoid disasters once the zooms hit. Worth every penny!

Thank you so much, so glad it's earning its keep!
Good day. In honor of National Cat Day, we are celebrating all our feline companions.
Honor your own cat by creating them in Cats Lock. Simply click me on the Home screen to begin. The bowtie comes standard, as it should.
For the fuller figure, there is now a Chonk slider. No judgement is implied.
Your cat can now grace the lock screen as well, so whoever approaches your Macintosh knows precisely who is in charge.
I have also learned to wag my tail. Do try not to stare.
And the app icon has been given a more refined look in Dark Mode.
