Kobel – you decide what the AI sees
An AI usually sees far more on your Mac than it needs for the task at hand. Kobel sits in between: you decide what the AI may see – down to the individual file. Kobel runs entirely locally on your Mac and never uploads your files to anyone else's servers.
The five-color system
For every folder and every single file, you decide through Kobel what you share:
Red – Not shared. The AI gets no access through Kobel.
Yellow – Read only. Reading is allowed, changing and deleting are not.
Orange – Work on a copy. Write access goes into a copy; your original stays untouched.
Teal – Full access with backup. The previous version is saved before every change.
Green – Full access. Read and write without restrictions.
The meaning of each color is immediately clear – no technical explanation needed.
App catalog and connections
Kobel comes with a growing catalog of connections you activate right inside the app: cloud storage such as Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, plus email, calendar, contacts and social media – managed through secure OAuth.
Compatible AI assistants
Kobel is built on the open Model Context Protocol (MCP) and works with the common MCP-capable AI clients, including Claude Desktop, GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI and ChatGPT.
For individuals
Set individual permissions for every folder and every file. Turn AI access on or off with a single click from the menu bar. See at a glance which AI apps are active. The activity log lets you review afterwards what the AI actually did.
For businesses and teams
Employees need no technical knowledge – the interface is self-explanatory and available in 15 languages. For IT there is a central admin policy, an allowlist of permitted AI assistants, company-wide restricted areas and team licenses via seat codes.
Privacy and local data storage
Kobel stores all permissions and settings only on your device and does not upload your files to its own servers. Kobel is not a cloud service – it is a local tool that you manage yourself.
