THE VISUAL METHOD
Long-press any character on the rice-paper canvas: the kaiti glyph cross-fades into a small narrative scene that reads as both an image and the same set of strokes.
For pictograms (象形字), the picture is a literal rendering — 山 is mountains, 木 is a tree.
For ideograms (会意字), the components interact — 休 (rest) shows a person leaning against a tree, with the 人 and 木 still visible as ink lines.
For phonetic-semantic compounds (形声字, the most common type), the detail page breaks down which component carries the meaning and which carries the sound — the structure that unlocks the next 80% of characters once you see it.
FROM CHARACTER TO SENTENCE
Learning a character doesn't end at the illustration. Each one opens into the everyday words it lives in, with a short sentence for each — so the character stops being an isolated shape and becomes something you can read.
Review then asks you to recall the meaning before anything is revealed. Miss one and you get the reading, the artwork, the memory hook, and a side-by-side comparison when a lookalike is what tripped you.

Characters now come with the words they actually live in. After you learn a Hanzi, a new Common-use stage shows everyday words built from it, each with a short example sentence — so a character stops being an isolated shape and starts being something you can read.
Review has been rebuilt around recall. Every card asks you to recognize the meaning first — sometimes from the character, sometimes from the English — with pronunciation, artwork, and hints all hidden until you answer. Only then does Reconnect explain: the reading with audio, the core meaning, and a real example sentence. Miss one and the illustration and its memory hook come back too, along with a side-by-side "Why this mix-up?" when you picked a lookalike.
Also in this update:
• Character pages in the library now lead with common words, then open into the full word list
• Optional daily study reminders at a time you choose
• A quicker placement check if you start out already knowing some Hanzi
• Reliability improvements
