WHAT IS NOVA?
NOVA groups every food into one of four categories:
• NOVA 1 — Unprocessed or minimally processed (fresh fruit, meat, eggs)
• NOVA 2 — Culinary ingredients (olive oil, butter, salt, sugar)
• NOVA 3 — Processed foods (canned goods, cheese, cured meats)
• NOVA 4 — Ultra-processed foods (soft drinks, packaged snacks, ready meals)
Ultra-processed foods (NOVA 4) are scientifically linked to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. CleanPlate makes it effortless to identify them before they go in your basket.

UPF CLASSIFIER

DATA
Product data comes from OpenFoodFacts, the world's largest open food database with over 3 million products. CleanPlate supplements this with a machine-learning UPF classifier for products that lack a NOVA score.
CleanPlate is not a medical app. NOVA classifications are based on food science research and should be used as one tool among many for making informed dietary choices.
