Pictan 5.0 • Choose the language of word meanings Choose Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean or Spanish to see a short meaning in that language, with the English definition below it, on cards, in word details and in the popup for a dotted-underlined word. All 8,000 words are covered. Pictan 4.5 • An easier start Answer the first 20 cards with "I knew it" or "Not yet" and Pictan starts you at the right level. • See your progress as a road Home now shows your Level road: where you are, how far the next level is, and you can move to any level you like. • See how well your words stick Words you've met are grouped by how long you keep them without forgetting: Under 1 day, Under 1 week, 1 week+ and 1 month+. Pictan 4.4 The Quick Test now starts with easier words, and card transitions are smoother. • Quick Test starts easy The first few questions use easier words and get harder as you go. Pictan 4.2 See the picture and meaning together, with more clues to help you recall a word on its first appearance. • The meaning, right on the picture The English definition and part of speech now appear along the bottom of the image. Take in both at once, and tap dotted-underlined words as before. • More clues for new words New words now show the first letter plus about half of the remaining letters, instead of only the first letter. A new word's next review is spaced further out only when you recall it quickly. Words and letter hints now use a fixed-width typeface, so the number and position of letters are easier to see. • See your review progress on the card Review cards for words you have recalled before now show their memory stage and review interval. Also updated • The Quick Test now works like learning: recall, reveal the answer, then answer. Pictan 4.1 A smoother way to practice recalling words. • Letter hints that meet you where you are New words start with the first letter. Words you have not yet learned get extra clues, while well-known words show one letter elsewhere. Review timing now distinguishes immediate recall from a first success after an initial miss. • A clearer view of your progress Refreshed Home and summary screens show your learning taking shape. See how words changed memory stages after a round, and revisit your daily activity in the new monthly calendar. • Smoother word lookup Hear a tapped word as its popup opens. Jump from a memory stage to its filtered word list, or move between words from the detail screen. We also refreshed word images and Settings, improved tree sound effects, and added a first-use explanation of AI-assisted content. Pictan 4.0 Learning is now built around recalling words. • Tap "Start learning" and the app picks what you need today — due reviews are taken first and new words fill the rest — in rounds of up to 20 cards. There is no longer a separate learn step and test step • Every card asks you to recall the word from its picture, English meaning, and letter hints before you show the answer. Your "I knew it" or "Not yet" decides when the word comes back • Letter hints adapt to how well you know each word: a new word shows more of its letters, and the hints fade as you recall it more reliably. Turn on "Don't hide the answer" in Settings to see every card in full from the start • End a round early and everything you answered is kept • After each round you see how many words you learned today, how each memory stage changed, and what is due tomorrow • Home now has a vocabulary tree. The trunk and branches grow as you learn more words, and the leaves darken as words take root. Leaves droop when a review is overdue, and the soil dries out when reviews pile up. After each round the growth replays with short sounds (you can turn them off in Settings) • Word status now uses five stages — Not started, Learning, Starting to remember, Growing, Retained — in both Stats and the word list • The opening level check is now the Quick Test: picture cards, the answer shown, and you choose whether you knew it. It takes about ten words, and you see the recommended difficulty with sample words before you start • More than 3,000 word pictures are new • In a tapped word's popup you can keep tapping words inside its definition. The blank in an example sentence shows the same hint letters as the word • Review reminders keep going for about two weeks after you pause, with widening gaps (still at most one a day, only on days you have reviews) • Layouts were adjusted throughout for larger text sizes Your learned words and review schedule carry over.
