Painting Mirror is a studio camera tool built for painters who want cleaner observation. Use your phone as a mirror, blur detail to judge big shapes, strip back to value masses, and simulate distance from your canvas — all from one quiet, focused app.
Traditional studio practice includes habits that are easy to skip when you're deep in a painting: the mirror check, stepping back to read the whole thing, squinting to strip away detail. This app translates those habits into the camera so they're always one tap away.
FREE STUDIO
Mirror and Composition remain free, always.
Mirror — A horizontal reflection exposes proportion drift that familiarity hides. Switch it on when a drawing feels right but looks wrong.
Composition — Check structure and placement with crop frame, rule of thirds, golden ratio, or diagonal armature guides while staying in the free studio.
FULL STUDIO
Unlocked through an App Store trial when eligible, or through Yearly, Monthly, or Permanent Studio access.
Grayscale — Strip colour to read the value structure directly. Correct weak passages before colour disguises them.
Blur — Simplify the scene the way squinting does. If the major shapes and edges don't read at low detail, they don't read.
Step Back — Restore the whole-painting distance read without leaving the room. Scales the scene to simulate viewing from across the studio.
Black Mirror — Dark reflective glass was a traditional atelier tool that suppressed colour so tonal structure was easier to judge. This mode recreates it.
Critique Delay — A brief pause before looking returns the eye fresher. Set the interval and let it run.
ALSO IN EVERY SESSION
Mirror Check — Left-right reversal or upside-down check, depending on what you need to see differently.
Pinch to Squint — Pinch inward in Mirror mode to blur temporarily, the way painters squint across a room.
Rest Eye — Blank the feed for a few seconds. Return to the same view with fresher judgment.
Pinned Study — Lock a working state so you can compare the current session against a stable earlier read.
Quiet Look — Hide the interface and just look at the work.
Live Reference — Float a reference image on screen while you compare and paint.
Studio Assistant — Save, mark up, and export working states from the session. Pull them up for critique or share with a teacher.
HOW IT WORKS
Everything runs on device. The camera feed is never recorded, stored remotely, or transmitted anywhere. Captures save to your Photo Library and the on-device Studio Assistant.
No analytics. No advertising. No tracking SDKs of any kind.
In-app purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Mirror and Composition remain free if you never unlock the full studio. Full Studio is available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time permanent purchase. Purchases restore across devices through your Apple Account.
