Open an EPUB from Files, or share one into PersonaTie from Safari, Mail or a cloud drive. No EPUB at hand? The built-in shelf of free public-domain classics has Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, The Great Gatsby, Little Women, Anna Karenina and The Count of Monte Cristo (Standard Ebooks, CC0), plus the four great Chinese novels.
PICK THE CHAPTERS — THE SCRIBE READS THEM
Choose one chapter, a handful, or the whole book. The Scribe reads the actual text and draws out the people, the ties between them and the events. Every person, tie and event cites the chapter it came from, so you can always check it against the page.
TEN KINDS OF TIE, TOLD APART BY COLOUR
Kin, marriage, sworn brotherhood, master and servant, peers, mentor and student, friends, romance, rivals, debts and grudges — each with its own colour, and a legend in the corner of the canvas. Tap a colour to see only those ties. Lines grow thicker the more often two people are connected in the book.
FOLLOW ANYONE
Tap a person to put them at the centre; a slider opens their circle from first-degree out to second-degree and further. Tap a line to read the relationship: how they met, how it changed, the scenes they share. Open a person for their profile, personality, ties, events, cultural background and cross-references — and ask the Scribe for more: related people, life events, what two people went through together.
TIMELINES
Every graph has a timeline, and any two people have a shared one — two lives side by side with the moments they have in common marked out. Events the book never dates keep their place in the story instead.
EVERYTHING IS EDITABLE
Every person, tie, event and note can be added, edited, reordered or deleted by hand. Copy or move a person into another graph. The same historical figure can carry a different persona in every book.
FOUR KINDS OF GRAPH
Works: novels, epics, plays, series. History: a court, a movement, an era. Family: your own family tree. Original: the story you are writing.
LOCAL-FIRST, BACKED BY YOUR ICLOUD
Your graphs live on your device and in your own private iCloud database. Reinstall or switch phones and they come back — no account, no extra charge, and no access for us. Signing in with Apple or Google is optional: it keeps a display name and carries bought Ink to a new device.
TWO LANGUAGES
Switch the interface between English and Simplified Chinese whenever you like. The Scribe answers in each book's own language.
