Ikura Cart: Japan Price Scan
Instant yen prices & tax-free
Only for iPhone
Free
From Nov 1, Japan tax-free is a refund: pay the tax-included price, get the tax back as you leave. Scan a tag for the price, the refund to expect and your trip budget.
Everything you spend in Japan, in one app.
Point your camera at a Japanese price tag to see the product name in your language, the tax-included price, and an estimate in your own currency. Add items to track your cart total and how much is left before the tax-free threshold. Set a trip budget and the app works out what you can spend today, then keeps meals, trains, tickets and receipts in the same place.
Shopping
• Scan Japanese price tags
• Product names in your language
• Tax-included price and currency estimate
• Cart total and tax-free progress
• Enter a price by hand when scanning is hard
Trip spending
• A trip budget and what is left of it
• What you can spend per day, from your end date
• Log meals, transport, tickets and more
• Scan a receipt total — you confirm it before it is saved
• Cash and card kept apart, with the cash you have left by your records
• Record money paid back to you
• Spending and shopping by date
While you are there
• Local weather and the week ahead
Currency estimates, receipt readings and weather are all for reference. Final prices and tax-free eligibility are decided by the store. The cash figure counts only what you have recorded.
more Built for Japan's new tax-free system (refund at departure, from Nov 1), with everything for leaving Japan in one place:
• Pick your departure airport to see which floor the tax-free kiosk is on, on Japan Customs' floor map (Narita: a link to Customs' map). It's saved when you pick it, so it opens at the airport without internet.
• A bag check for each receipt: tick off what has to stay out of checked luggage until customs has seen it.
• Reminders by 9 pm the night before and by 7 am on departure day (turn on in Settings).
• At airports where Visit Japan Web works: what to do beforehand and at the airport.
• Note how the store will refund you when you save a tax-free receipt, then track what came back in "Got your tax-free refund?".
• Weather and records roll over to the new day while the app stays open, and Hakone, Nikko, Kawaguchiko and Otaru get their own local forecast.
1.4.0 6h ago
Ahead of Japan's tax-free change on Nov 1, the tax-free wording now switches to the right day even if the app stays open overnight. The airport cash refund guide is updated with the latest announcements: Cash Japan at Narita, Chubu, Kansai, Kobe, Fukuoka and New Chitose; Self Tax Refund at Haneda, Narita and Naha.
1.3.2 Oct 26
Added Tsuruha to the store list in the refund-fee preview. The store fee now also shows as a % of your refund, not just the price, so it is easier to see how much comes off what you actually get back. When picking up cash at the airport, we now note that Narita, Chubu, Kansai, Kobe, Fukuoka and New Chitose use Cash Japan as the refund operator.
1.3.1 Oct 21
From Nov 1 (Japan's tax-free reform), the refund preview shows the store's own fee separately from the fee for how you receive it (card, bank transfer, app, or cash at the airport). Stores like Don Quijote and Bic Camera announced 0% store fees, but airport cash can still carry a separate fee — the screen now tells these apart and warns if that fee isn't published. A flat payout fee also shows how much you need to buy to come out ahead. Through Oct 31, the screen stays as it was — one store-fee choice.
1.3.0 Oct 19
This update refreshes our store listing with new screenshots. Nothing changes inside the app.
1.2.9 Oct 13
• New yen converter for prices without a tag: menus, ticket machines, market stalls. Type the amount, say whether tax is already in it (yes, +8% or +10%), and see what you will pay in yen and in your own currency. It works offline with the last saved rate and includes a quick-reference table.
• Open it from the rate row on Home, and add the result straight to your cart.
• If you never picked a currency, the app now keeps the one for your phone's region (pounds, euros, Australian dollars…) instead of switching to US dollars after a restart.
1.2.8 Oct 1
• Wording tuned for each language: US spelling and a one-line explanation of Japan's consumption tax in English, 退税 and 小票 in Simplified Chinese, Taiwan and Hong Kong terms in their own Traditional Chinese editions.
• Your own currency now leads the currency list.
• A new opening line on the English home screen: two prices on one tag, which one do you pay?
1.2.7 Sep 24
• Japan's tax-free rules change on 1 November: the register no longer takes the tax off. You pay the tax-included price, and the shop refunds the consumption tax once customs confirms the goods at departure. The app explains the change once when you open it, and calculates under the new rules from that day.
• New departure-prep card: from 1 November, on the day before your trip ends, Home shows the consumption tax you can expect back and the steps at the airport — the tax-free kiosk before checking any bags, every item in hand, and how the refund reaches you.
• The app now asks for a rating only once, on the day before your trip ends, never while you are adding to the cart.
1.2.6 Sep 21
• The "Plan what this trip will cost" card on Home is now a boarding pass. "Start planning" takes you straight to the trip settings.
• In trip settings, the destination, dates, budget and cash you enter fill the pass at the top as you type, with the amount you can spend per day.
• Japan's tax-free scheme changes on 1 November (tax is refunded after departure is confirmed, rather than deducted at the till); the app's tax-free guidance switches on that day.
• Expense records can now be corrected: tap the pencil on a record to change the amount, category, memo or payment method. The expense form asks what the money was for first; if you wrote it down, picking a category is optional and the icon in your list is guessed from what you wrote.
• History is now grouped by day, with each day's total. Tapping "Day N of M" on Home opens the trip settings.
1.2.5 Sep 9
• Screens no longer get cut off at larger text sizes: the expense save button and amount field, the calendar's apply and clear buttons, the tax toggle, screen titles and onboarding badges now fit. With accessibility extra-large text, app text grows to the largest standard size.
• The trip calendar has "Earlier months": pick the first day of a long stay up to three months back.
• Tax-included prices printed with decimals (for example ¥360.80) are shown as printed, and the cart total is rounded down once, to whole yen. Manual entry accepts decimals too.
• When a tag prints the tax-included price, that number is used as is. It could previously show one yen less.
• Fixed the display currency changing when the app was reopened.
• Price tags are recognised faster.
1.2.4 Sep 3
• Fixed the exchange-rate and contact screens running off the bottom at larger text sizes, with no way to scroll down to what had been cut off. On the exchange-rate screen the part that went missing was the note saying these are stored rates that may differ from what your card is charged.
• The cart count badge no longer outgrows its circle when text is enlarged.
1.2.3 Aug 31
• Japan's tax-free rules change on 1 November 2026. From that day the register charges the full tax-included price, and the shop refunds the consumption tax after customs confirms the goods are leaving Japan. The app shows the guidance that matches the day you shopped — purchases up to 31 October follow the old rules, and those from 1 November the new ones.
• The tax-free checklist has been rewritten for the new scheme: you have 90 days from the day after purchase to leave Japan, you need to be able to show what you bought at departure, and how and when the money comes back is decided by each shop.
• The rule that consumables had to be sealed in a bag and left unopened until you flew home is abolished, as is the ¥500,000 cap on them, so both are gone from the guidance. The ¥5,000 pre-tax threshold is unchanged.
• Fixed the wording in saved shopping records. Under the new scheme nothing is handed back at the till, so the app now shows the refund as still to come rather than as money received.
• Ending a trip is simpler. There are two choices now — finish this trip, or cancel it — and what happens to your records is asked afterwards. Finishing asks whether to file it as a past trip; either answer leaves your shopping and expense records untouched. Cancelling asks whether to keep those records or delete them along with the trip, and shows how many and what they add up to before anything goes.
• You can now record money paid back to you. Pick «Got back» at the top of the expense form, enter the amount, and it comes off the trip total — and if you took it in cash, your recorded cash goes up. For when you cover a friend's share on your card and they hand you cash later.
1.2.1 Aug 28
• A home screen. Open the app and you see what this trip has cost.
• Set a trip budget and dates, and the app tells you what you can spend per day. The budget is optional — everything works without one.
• Tap a day to see what you spent that day.
• Record spending that has no price tag — meals, transport, admission — with a category, and it counts toward the total.
• Photograph a receipt and the app reads the total and the line items for you. You confirm before it saves.
• Cash and card are recorded separately, with the balance of the cash you brought.
• While you are in Japan, the home screen shows the temperature and forecast where you are. Approximate location only, never stored. (Source: Japan Meteorological Agency)
• The app now asks for two permissions: camera and approximate location.
• Type size and layout adapt to your screen.
• Offline now says you are offline.
• Times and amounts now follow the app's language rather than the device's.
1.2.0 Aug 24
• Added Japanese. You can pick it in Settings → Display Language.
• Added Japanese yen (JPY) as a display currency, for when you would rather read prices in yen with no conversion. The exchange-rate line is hidden while it is selected.
• The privacy policy and terms now open in the language you picked in the app. They could previously open in a different language.
• Fixed an issue where an item whose name could not be read showed wording from another language.
• Dates on the how-to screens now follow your language's format.
1.1.0 Aug 11
• Six more currencies — 11 in total, now including the British pound, euro, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and Singapore dollars. The default follows your device region.
• Coupon discounts on the tax-free screen. Enter the rate (%) or amount (¥) printed on your own coupon and see the final estimate.
• Better product categories. Items that are hard to call — character goods, for example — now ask you to pick instead of guessing.
• New app icon.
• Fixed clipped text on the scan screen at large font sizes, and polished the English wording throughout.
