Jitter Box measures the real speed of the link between two Macs on your network. Run a test, watch the live needle climb, and find out exactly what your router, switch, or cable is capable of — no third-party servers, no telemetry, no sign-up. USE IT TO • Track down the Wi-Fi dead spot in your house ("is it the bedroom or my router?") • Sanity-check a new switch, cable, NIC, or Wi-Fi mesh node before you blame the ISP • See how much overhead your VPN adds compared to your raw LAN • Compare two laptops on the same Wi-Fi to spot a flaky radio • Quickly diagnose a "the internet is slow" complaint from another room WHAT IT MEASURES • Median ping over 20 samples — robust to a single hiccup • Jitter, the mean variation between consecutive round-trips • Download throughput, across 4 parallel TCP streams for 10 seconds, with a 1-second warm-up discarded so you see the steady-state number • Upload throughput, same methodology in the other direction • Local history of every test you've run, with one-click re-runs against your favourite peers WHY PEER-TO-PEER Most speed-test apps shake hands with a server in a data centre and report numbers that reflect the whole path between you and that server. That's useful for "is my ISP delivering what I'm paying for" — but useless for "is my home network OK". Jitter Box only ever talks to a Mac you choose, so the numbers reflect exactly the link you care about. PRIVACY The app collects no analytics, no telemetry, and no third-party SDKs are bundled. Test history lives entirely on your Mac. Your data never leaves your network. REQUIREMENTS • Two Macs on the same local network (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or wired via VPN) • macOS 14 Sonoma or later • The "receiver" Mac flips a single switch in Settings to start listening for incoming tests PAIRS WITH LINUX A free companion command-line tool lets you run the receiver on any Linux machine — a home NAS, a Raspberry Pi, a cloud server — so you can test from your Mac against a non-Mac peer.
