CutList: Lumber Optimizer
Bin-pack your cuts
$2.99 · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Type the lengths you need, pick your stock, and CutList lays out which piece goes on which board, blade kerf counted, with the offcut left on every one.
CutList turns a list of pieces you need into a board by board cutting plan. Type each length and how many of it, pick the stock length you buy at the yard, and CutList packs the pieces onto as few boards as it can.
It sorts every piece longest first, then drops each one on the first board that still has room, starting a new board only when none of them does. That is first fit decreasing bin packing. Blade kerf starts at 0.125 inch and you can change it, and it is added between pieces that share a board, which is where the blade actually goes. It changes the answer: four pieces at 24 inches fit on one 96 inch board with a zero kerf, and at 0.125 inch they take two boards, three on the first and one on the second.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Enter a length in inches and a quantity, and add as many lengths as the job needs
- Pick your stock length: 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 feet
- Set the blade kerf in inches, starting at 0.125
- Read the boards to buy, the total stock that comes to in inches, and the waste percentage
- Open the plan board by board and see the pieces on each one and the offcut left, to the hundredth of an inch
- Watch the whole plan redraw as soon as you add a length, change the kerf or pick another stock
- Delete a line with one tap and see the board count move
- Compare stock lengths before you buy: the opening example takes five 8 foot boards or four 10 foot boards
- Type a decimal with a point or a comma, whichever your keyboard gives you
- Work on iPhone or iPad
WHO IT IS FOR
Anyone breaking a lot of pieces out of stock: shelving and cabinet carcasses, studs and blocking, deck boards, trim, garden beds and set builds. The app opens on a worked example, 4 shelves at 48 inches and 6 braces at 36 inches on 8 foot stock, which comes out at 5 boards, 480 inches of stock and 14.87 percent waste.
PRIVACY
CutList makes no network requests. Nothing you type leaves the device, there is no account, no analytics and no tracking, and the plan is worked out on the device, so it still runs in a shop or a yard with no signal.
Lengths are in inches and stock is picked in feet. A piece longer than the stock board cannot be placed and is left out of the plan, so please pick a stock length that covers your longest piece. First fit decreasing is a packing method, not an exhaustive search, so treat the board count as a good working answer rather than a proof. Please check each board for knots, crooks and rough ends, and measure once more before the blade goes down.
