Snake Identifier & Venom ID

Species, family & lookalikes

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Photograph a snake from a distance and get a likely match in seconds. Every result opens with the venom category the species carries, then family, range and look-alikes. Snake Identifier turns your camera into a field guide. Photograph a snake from a distance, or pick a shot from your library, and get a likely match in seconds, led by the venom category the species carries. WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU - The venom category the species carries: non-venomous, mildly venomous, venomous, deadly venomous or unknown - The common name, plus a second or regional name where one exists - The Latin scientific name, or the genus where a photo cannot go further - The taxonomic family: Viperidae, Elapidae, Colubridae, Boidae, Pythonidae - Habitat, native range, and adult length in meters and feet - Venom type as species background: hemotoxic, neurotoxic, cytotoxic, mixed or none - Look-alike species, each with the venom category it carries, and the field marks that separate them - Typical prey, and how the species behaves when disturbed - A confidence level, so you can see how sure the answer is A SPECIES CATEGORY, NOT A SCORE Venom level leads every result. It is a short label from a fixed set, and it describes the species the app believes it is looking at, not the individual animal you photographed, at your distance, in your light. It is not a measurement or a rating. When a picture cannot support a confident call the result reads Unknown, which is the honest answer. THE LOOK-ALIKES ARE THE HONEST HALF Cottonmouth and banded water snake. Coral snake and scarlet kingsnake. Rat snake and eastern diamondback. Every result lists the species yours is most often mistaken for, the venom category each of those carries, and the traits that separate them. BUILT FOR THE PHOTOS YOU ACTUALLY TAKE Head shape, pupil shape where it shows, scale keeling, dorsal pattern, banding and body proportions go into the match. Most sit on the head, so a frame shot from behind or from far off lowers the confidence the app reports, and where an image will not support a species-level answer the result stops at the genus or family and says so. Common names are regional, so the app asks where you are when that decides it. ASK ABOUT THE SPECIES YOU IDENTIFIED Premium adds Ask AI: a thread scoped to the snake you just identified. Ask what separates it from its look-alikes, how far the range extends, and what it eats. It stays inside snakes and herpetology. YOUR COLLECTION, KEPT Every scan is saved on your device with its photo, so a season on the trail becomes a log you can read back. Nothing to type in, no account. WHO IT IS FOR - Anyone who just found a snake in the yard, the garage or across a path - Keepers with a rehomed corn snake or ball python and no paperwork - Hikers, herpers and photographers who shot something from a distance - Parents, teachers and museum visitors naming what is behind the glass HONEST ABOUT WHAT A PHOTO CAN DO An identification here is a best-effort AI suggestion, not an authoritative determination. It names species and tells you about them, and that is all it does. It does not give first aid or bite treatment, and a suspected snake bite is an emergency: call your local emergency number and get medical help immediately. It is not a guide to handling, catching, moving or removing a snake. Venom level, venom type and behavior notes are background about a species, never an assessment of the animal in front of you. Identifying a snake needs an internet connection. Scans you have already saved stay on your device and can be reopened at any time. THIRTY-THREE LANGUAGES The interface and the results are available in 33 languages. Latin scientific names and taxonomic families stay in Latin in all of them. PREMIUM Free includes 2 identifications per day. Premium lifts the daily limit, opens the full detail sheet on every result, and unlocks Ask AI. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and you can manage or cancel yours in your App Store account settings at any time.
