WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU
- The common name, and an alternate name where the fish has one
- The Latin scientific name, or the genus where a photo cannot go further
- The habitat the species lives in: freshwater, saltwater, brackish, reef, pelagic or deep sea
- The taxonomic family it belongs to
- Native range, and where the species has been introduced
- Typical adult length, in centimeters and inches
- What it eats, and whether it schools or lives alone
- Look-alike species, and the trait that tells them apart
- A confidence level, so you can see how sure the answer is
FRESHWATER, SALTWATER OR REEF?
That label leads every result, because it is the first thing a keeper, a diver or anyone at the shoreline actually wants. It is a short category from a fixed set - Freshwater, Saltwater, Brackish, Reef, Pelagic, Deep sea - and it belongs to the species, not to the individual fish in your photo and not to the water you were standing in. A reef species photographed in a living-room tank still reads Reef. It is a description, never a number, and never an instruction about what to put in a tank.
AQUARIUM, POND, REEF AND WILD
Cichlids, tetras, guppies, bettas and plecos in a community tank. Koi and goldfish in a garden pond. Wrasses, angelfish and butterflyfish over a reef. Perch, carp, bass and trout in fresh water. Sharks and rays count too, because they are fish. Something that is not a fish comes back with low confidence and says so, rather than with an invented name.
BUILT FOR THE PHOTOS YOU ACTUALLY TAKE
Through glass, at an angle, half the fish already leaving the frame. Body shape, fin count and shape, barring, scale pattern, mouth position and the lateral line all go into the match. When an image cannot support a species-level answer, and with juveniles, cichlids, gobies, minnows and characins it often cannot, the result stops at the genus or the family and says so instead of inventing a species.

It is not a source of regulatory, health or husbandry guidance: it does not tell you what may be kept or taken where you live, it is not a setup or feeding plan for a tank, and it gives no advice on handling any fish. Aquarium notes and range notes are background about a species, never an instruction about the one in front of you.
Identification needs an internet connection. Scans you have already saved stay on your device and can be reopened at any time.
The app interface and the results are available in 33 languages.
