Sign in once, then work anywhere If you use V-Tune somewhere without internet, you no longer have to sign in again each time. Sign in once and the app keeps working offline; whenever you're back online it refreshes itself quietly in the background.

Sharper where it counts The strobe bars now blur when a note's pitch is unsteady, rather than when it's far out of tune. A note that's clearly flat but steady stays crisp while it slides; a note sitting on pitch but warbling goes soft, which on a handpan usually means partials beating against each other, and is worth seeing. Peaks are also located around ten times more accurately when a partial sits well away from its target. And there's now a Spanish user guide, at vtune-app.com.

Strobe speed, properly calibrated The Speed setting is now a multiple of a conventional strobe: 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x, with 1x being the real thing — the pattern turns once a second for every hertz a note is out. It also no longer depends on your screen's refresh rate, so the same note reads the same on every device. If you've used V-Tune before, expect the strobe to be livelier than you're used to. That's the fix. Whatever Speed you had chosen carries over to its closest equivalent. Guided tour The tour no longer points at controls tucked inside a closed menu, and it can't get stuck any more — every step is reachable, including if you've declined the microphone prompt. The user guide now covers the waterfall, the piano keyboard and the analyser's resize handle.

Introducing the waterfall — a new view in the Spectrum Analyser that shows ten seconds of sound at a glance. • See how long each partial actually sustains after the strike, not just how loud it is right now. The spectrum is drawn as a heatmap behind the live curve, with colour standing in for power. • BRIGHT and TAIL set the two ends of the colour range, so the display stays readable on a quiet instrument. SOFT smooths it across frequency. • Isolation windows carry through to the waterfall — bracket a single partial and watch that one decay while the strobe reads it. • A piano keyboard now runs along the frequency axis, so you can read a partial's note straight off the display. Keys your strobe bands are targeting are highlighted. • Drag the analyser to whatever height suits you. Also in this release: the sharp keys are readable in light mode again, and a phone held sideways now asks to be turned upright rather than cramming everything in.

• Fixed a bug where the microphone would stop picking up after you switched to another app and came back — the app had to be force-quit to recover. • Fixed the keyboard zooming the app in and leaving it stuck when you tapped a text field. • New CUSTOM control: set your tuning target directly in hertz, typed to as many decimals as you need, or nudged a cent at a time. Replaces the old FINE control and does both jobs. • The note picker on phones is now noticeably larger and easier to hit.

Fixes and improvements from the first week: • The reference tone now plays through the speaker instead of the earpiece, and there's a volume control for it in Settings. • Gu port notes are now tappable - one tap puts both isolation windows on them and zooms the analyser in, so the strobe bands read nothing but the Gu port. • New FINE control for targeting a fraction off the note, in cents, when an instrument isn't on the equal-tempered grid. It shifts the fundamental, octave and fifth together. • Arrow-key cents nudging on desktop now actually works. • V-Tune no longer asks you to buy it again when you're offline. • The version you're running is shown in Settings, under About.
