The 802.1X and EAP Ladder adds Break it: pick a fault, such as an untrusted server certificate, and watch where the exchange stops. Rate vs Range adds a rate set builder. New: Shannon Capacity. The ceiling every Wi-Fi generation has been pushing against since 1948, and the reason more bandwidth stops helping long before you expect it to. New: a VoIP over Wi-Fi card for the Wireshark filter set. Quick Reference is reorganized. Nineteen subgroups became thirteen, so the card you want sits where you would look for it rather than where it happened to land. Updated: Fix Your Own Wi-Fi now ships the current manuscript. Five more figures, laid out at the size the figures were drawn for, and a smaller download than the stale copy it replaces. Fixed: a network advertising OWE transition or WPA3 transition mode was read as though the transition marker were a security scheme of its own. Some open networks were labeled OWE because of it. They now read as what they are, which matters when you are choosing a network through a WLAN Pi. Educational Resources is legible in light mode, and credits the people whose work it lists by name.

New: SSID Airtime. A network's speed is not what it costs the air around it. This calculator shows the airtime a given SSID consumes, so you can see why adding one more network makes everything slower. The model is Jonathan Finney's, ported with his numbers and checked against his own calculator. New: Link Info. The wired side of your connection, reported the way the Wi-Fi side always has been: which links exist, which one holds the default route, and what each one is actually carrying. Where the platform allows it, you can choose which link the other tools test over instead of accepting whatever the system picked. New: every Field Plate downloads as a PDF from the screen it belongs to. All fourteen, no hunting. Fixed: on a slow link, Test My Connection could tell you it had not managed to read your Wi-Fi while showing you a Wi-Fi speed on the same card. It now says which side it measured and which it did not, and offers no verdict when there is nothing to compare. Every result also names the connection it was taken over, which matters now that you can choose one. Fixed: a saved Wi-Fi reading is dated when it was taken, not when it was reopened. The subnet calculators are findable, and searchable by name.

Fixed: with the Wi-Fi radio switched off and a USB-C Ethernet adapter attached, the app named a Wi-Fi network you were not connected to and printed the Ethernet address as the Wi-Fi one. It now says plainly that you are not on Wi-Fi. The cause is that the address the app was reading is chosen by interface name, and a USB Ethernet adapter looks like an interface name Wi-Fi uses, so the wired address was read as a wireless one. The same mistake applied to USB tethering, which is far more common than a dongle, so that is fixed too. Fixed: the address shown as your own could be the wrong one. On a phone with the radio off and a cable attached, the app reported an address belonging to the carrier's translation layer rather than the address on the cable. Addresses that are never a device's real address, including the 169.254 range that means no address was issued at all, are no longer offered as yours, and a real link is now preferred over a tunnel. Fixed: Lookup (ARP/NDP) said a MAC address was not exposed on this platform when the platform had exposed several on the same screen. Those entries were hosts that did not answer, which is a useful thing to know about a network, and the app said something false about itself instead. Each entry now says which of the two it is, and where the source reports it, which interface the neighbor was seen on. A host reachable over both a cable and a radio appears once for each, which is a fact rather than a repeat. Fixed: Lookup (BGP/ASN) reported Registry and AS type as not available on this platform when the routing database had simply returned nothing for those fields. The app now names the source of the silence rather than blaming your device. The guide describes every platform the Toolbox runs on rather than two of them, and the Ping Sweep illustration no longer draws its label through its own arrow.

Fixed: on iPhone and iPad the signal-to-noise ratio could be reported as a negative number, and a strong connection could be graded as poor because of it. If the app told you your Wi-Fi was weak on a link you knew was good, this was why. The four bundled channel allocation cards have been reissued. The versions shipped before this release captioned U-NII-4 as not available for unlicensed use, which is no longer the case, and showed Standard Power carrying Low Power Indoor's channel ladder. If you printed one of those cards, print it again. Subnet Planner does the IPv4 block math that spans more than one network. Split carves a parent block into right-sized subnets from a list of host counts, so the /22 you were handed for the site becomes a VLAN for staff, one for guests, one for the IoT gear and a point-to-point link. Summarize runs the same math backwards: paste a list of networks and get the single block that covers them all, plus the smallest set of blocks that covers them exactly. Useful when you are writing a route or an ACL and want one line instead of nine. Summarize also prints what the covering block claims that you never asked for. Give it 10.0.0.0/24 and 10.0.3.0/24 and the answer is 10.0.0.0/22, along with the 512 addresses it swallows on the way: 10.0.1.0/24 and 10.0.2.0/24. Transfer Time divides a file size by a link speed and solves for whichever of the three you are missing: how long the firmware push takes, how fast the link has to be to finish inside your maintenance window, or how much data moves in that window. Link speeds are quoted in bits and file sizes in bytes, and the factor of 8 between them is where the wrong answers come from, so your input is restated in bits under every answer. 1 GB at 100 Mbps is 1 min 20 s. The same file quoted as 1 GiB is 1 min 25.9 s, and that gap on a single gigabyte is why the decimal and binary units are kept apart. BSS Load is on the tool list, and on an iPhone or iPad it will not give you a reading. No beacon information elements reach the app on iOS, so the screen opens and tells you it received none rather than showing you a blank. On macOS it decodes element 11 of the beacon: how many stations the access point says are associated, how busy it senses the medium to be, and how much admission capacity it has left. Those are the access point's own numbers about itself, so two access points on one channel can honestly disagree. Plenty of access points never send the element at all, and knowing that is itself a finding.

Two new reference tools. Batteries decodes what is printed on a cell. The code on a lithium coin cell carries its size: CR2032 is 20 mm across and 3.2 mm tall. The code on a button cell usually does not, and the app shows which is which, alongside a to-scale ladder of ten common sizes from AAAA to D. SD Cards reads the marks on a card face. Speed Class, UHS Speed Class, Video Speed Class and Application Performance Class each promise a sustained write floor, and only one of them also promises random IOPS. That is why a card rated for 4K video can still be slow at booting a Raspberry Pi. The 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz channel allocation cards have been reissued with corrected free-space path loss figures. New: a 6 GHz Geofenced Variable Power channel card, covering the fourth power class the FCC authorized in 2026.

Wi-Fi Information and the Roaming Log now show the exact center frequency next to the band, so a channel number is never ambiguous across bands. Channel 53 reads "6 GHz (6215 MHz)". Interface Info now shows your local IPv4 and IPv6 addresses from the live companion Shortcut. Accessibility: the Roaming Log's Start-recording control now announces its state correctly to VoiceOver.

Accessibility. Buttons across the app now report their name to VoiceOver and other screen readers. Location access. Granting Location permission now works on the Wi-Fi Information screen. Clearer help. The ICMP Ping and Traceroute notes no longer imply a Linux desktop build. WLAN Pi support is coming. More honest reporting. The Roaming Log states how many samples each summary is based on, and screens no longer report results they did not check.

New in 1.8.0 Roaming Log, upgraded. Each roam now shows the band, channel, and signal for both the access point you left and the one you joined, so you can see whether a roam was an upgrade. The BSSID now shows the identifying tail, and Copy and Share are back and improved. New references. Packet Decode (IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, and ICMP header anatomy, TCP flags and connection states, and ICMP codes), Find the Switch and Port (LLDP and CDP), TCP/IP filters in the Wireshark reference, and nmap, iperf3, tcpdump, and tshark in the command reference. Fixes. Test My Connection no longer shows a stale network name when the live network name is unavailable, plus stability and polish.

FIXED: STALE WI-FI NETWORK NAME In Test My Connection, "What to tell support" could show the name of a network you were no longer on, carried over from an earlier reading, under a current timestamp. The app now takes the network name from your device's live read, so it matches the network you are actually on. When a captured reading belongs to a different network than the one you are on, its signal details are no longer shown as current. FIXED: PING NAMES IT CANNOT RESOLVE Ping and Ping (ICMP) reported an unresolvable host name as 100% packet loss, which reads as "the host is down" when the name simply could not be looked up. Both tools now say the name could not be resolved and suggest checking it for a typo, instead of reporting loss for a host that was never reached. ADDED: INPUT VALIDATION The network tools now check a host or IP address as you type and show a clear message when it is not valid, instead of running and failing in a way that looks like the tool is broken. ALSO Corrected the Downtilt Coverage diagram so the far distance is measured from the mast. Reworded the ICMP tools to describe what they actually do, with no made-up claims.

This release fixes several cases where the app showed a Wi-Fi reading it did not have, or blamed your Wi-Fi for a problem that was not the Wi-Fi. It also brings iOS the 1.7.2 corrections, which never shipped here. FIXED: WI-FI READINGS WITH NO WI-FI With Wi-Fi off and the phone on cellular, Test My Connection could still show a Wi-Fi signal card with a green LIVE badge, a Wi-Fi data rate of 29 Mbps, and the advice "Boost the Wi-Fi signal to raise the ceiling." There was no Wi-Fi link to boost. The 29 Mbps was a stale cached reading, left from the last Wi-Fi network that phone had joined, and the app kept showing it and labeling it Live. When the app can positively determine you are not on Wi-Fi, it now says so plainly and shows nothing else: no signal reading, no data rate, no Wi-Fi advice. It also separates "we could not read this" from "this does not exist." FIXED: THE APP NO LONGER BLAMES YOUR WI-FI FOR THE INTERNET If you were on a working Wi-Fi network whose internet was down, the app would call your Wi-Fi "Weak," tell you to make sure you were connected to Wi-Fi, and report the internet as "Couldn't check." Your Wi-Fi was fine. The internet was the problem. The app now says exactly that: "Your Wi-Fi is fine. The internet is not reachable." It also recognizes a captive portal and tells you to sign in. When the app measured your Wi-Fi, it keeps that measurement instead of downgrading it to explain an internet failure. NEW: THE APP ASKS BEFORE USING CELLULAR DATA A full speed test moves real data. If you are on cellular, Test My Connection and Network Quality now tell you roughly how much the test will use at your speed, and ask before running it. You can decline. On cellular, the app also skips the responsiveness measurement, which would add another download for a number that is secondary, and it says so rather than showing a failure. FIXED: LIVE MONITORING Live Wi-Fi readings could stop a few seconds after you started them, or fail to start and ask you to reinstall the companion Shortcut that was working fine. Returning from the Shortcut could also drop you back to the home screen with the test unfinished. Live monitoring now keeps running, and a test that was interrupted by the Shortcut hand-off finishes on its own. FIXED: SIGNAL GRADING Signal quality grading is now consistent across the app. The analyzer and the Signal Thresholds reference screen were grading on different dBm thresholds, so the same reading could be called "poor" on one screen and "fair" on another. Both now read from a single source: Excellent above -60 dBm, Good -60 to -67, Fair -67 to -72, Poor -73 and weaker. A weak reading is guidance, not a verdict. Plenty of connections run fine at -75 dBm, and the app now says so. NEW: TOOLS START FROM YOUR NETWORK Ping Sweep, Port Scan, and the ping tools now prefill your current subnet or gateway instead of a generic default. When the app can read your subnet mask, it fills in your true network. When it can only see your address, it assumes a /24 and says so, so you know to widen it if your network is larger. FIXED: REFERENCE DATA We checked our reference screens against primary sources and corrected the errors we found. Every corrected value now carries a citation. - LMR-1200 coax maximum frequency: 6.0 GHz corrected to 5.2 GHz. - 5 GHz 160 MHz channels: removed a channel that does not exist. - IEC 60309 black band: 500-1000 V corrected to 500-690 V. - Part 15 status: "Secondary" corrected to "Unlicensed." - 2.4 GHz channel overlap: corrected from 60 MHz to 50 MHz. - 100G fiber reach over OM3, OM4, and OM5: updated to the SR4 figures. REMOVED The "Dual Orbs on WLAN Pi" tool is gone. A bundled iperf3 binary that the app did not use is gone too. DOCUMENTATION The field manual and the in-app help were rewritten to describe what the app actually does. Some pages described behavior the app did not have.

This release corrects errors we found in an audit of our own tools and reference tables. Several were wrong. A full write-up of what happened and how we found it is coming. CORRECTED Cable Loss: the attenuation table was understating loss by about 40 percent. It now uses Times Microwave's published equation, and offers only cables with published data at your frequency. Rain Fade: the ITU-R P.838-3 coefficients were wrong. Replaced from the ITU document. PoE Budget: the PSE column was never shown, so switch budgets came out low. Both PSE and PD power now appear, and Class 8 is corrected to 90 W per IEEE 802.3-2022. Ping Sweep, Ping, Port Scan, ARP/NDP: a host that never answered was being counted as alive. A sweep of an empty subnet could report every address as live. Only hosts that actually answer are now listed, and a refused connection is labeled as what it is. Traceroute: tracing a hostname never stopped. It ran the full 30 hops and reported "target not reached" on a trace that had already succeeded. Fixed on both engines. 802.11 reason and status codes: several were wrong, including the 802.11r codes. Re-sourced from IEEE 802.11-2020 and now pinned to their clause. Wi-Fi 7 maximum data rate: we showed 46 Gbps. That figure needs a 16 stream mode the ratified standard does not define. The correct ratified maximum is 23.1 Gbps at 8 streams. MCS Index: rounding errors and spatial stream errors corrected against the published tables. Cells with no published value now say so, rather than showing a computed guess. Modulation: the SNR and EVM figures were not reaching screen readers, while the help text said they were. They are now. Signal thresholds: these are labeled as recommended design targets, because that is what they are. IEEE 802.11 does not define good or poor signal levels, and the right thresholds vary by site and by customer. WHY Our tests passed. All 3,391 of them. They were written by running the code and recording what it produced, so they proved the app faithfully reproduced its source. They could not tell us the source was wrong. We built a different check: read the standard, then compare. That is what found these. The app now ships 4,061 tests, and the values are pinned to IEEE, ITU, IANA and manufacturer documents rather than to itself.

On a fresh install, tapping Check My Connection no longer bounces you to the Shortcuts app, and your internet speed test now reads accurately on the first run. The Wavelength tool now shows millimeters, alongside meters, centimeters, feet, and inches. More reliable connection speed tests, with an automatic fallback when the primary is busy. Visual polish and reliability fixes.

Live readings are simpler: tools open straight to your connection with no setup prompts. A single "Get reading" grabs live Wi-Fi or cellular detail without leaving a status banner running. Continuous live monitoring is now an opt-in toggle.

Easier live Wi-Fi setup: a new "Set up live Wi-Fi" option in About, and the app no longer re-asks for the companion Shortcut once you have added it.
