as you go, share a copy or collaborate with friends or family.
For people who collect places.
You travel somewhere, find a coffee shop worth remembering, and want it
findable next time. Or you're planning a trip and want to pin everywhere
worth going before you leave. Whereto handles both, without the
account / login / tracking machinery every other app insists on.
TRIPS are itineraries. Multiple cities, optional dates, a pin for every
place you plan to visit or have visited. Mark them visited as you go.
Watch the colour-coded pip strip on the home card fill up.
LISTS are open-ended. One city, no dates, an ongoing collection. "Tokyo
udon shops worth coming back to." "Wedding venues in Sicily." "Coffee
in Lisbon that isn't a bica."
NINE CATEGORIES
Food, Coffee, Bars, Things to do, Shopping, Park / Nature, Stay,
Transport, Other. Each one is a colour. Once you've used the app a few
times the system reads at a glance — you don't have to label-read a
map.
SEARCH AND PIN
Search Google Places for a pin, or long-press the map and drop one
yourself. Photos, hours and rating come in from Google automatically.
Tag a category, mark visited, write a note. Swipe a row to mark visited
or delete. Both are unambiguous.
SHARING
Share a trip by tap-to-open link via Messages, AirDrop, email. The
person you sent it to taps the link and the trip opens — even if they
don't have Whereto installed they can preview the pins; install to
import.
Or share collaboratively over iCloud. Family members edit the same trip
live. No invite codes, no link-management, no b******t.
PRIVACY
No accounts. No login. No servers. No tracking SDKs. Whereto stores
your data in your private iCloud. The only outbound network traffic is
to Google Places when you actively search for a place by name — and
Google sees a developer API key, not anything that identifies you.
DESIGN
Brutalist editorial. Berkeley Mono on the data surfaces, sharp corners
everywhere, ink-on-paper in light mode, near-black in dark. Built for
legibility at speed, not visual decoration.
IMPORT EXISTING MAPS
Already keep places in Google My Maps? Export your map as KML or KMZ,
then pick the file in Whereto Settings → Import. Whereto reads your
layers as categories and your folders as cities.
WHO IT'S FOR
People who travel deliberately. People who keep restaurant lists.
People who want a private, brutalist alternative to Google Maps' "saved"
list — fine for one coffee shop, falls apart the moment you want
structure.
NOT FOR
Tour booking. Restaurant reservations. Navigation (Whereto hands off
directions to Google Maps when you actually need to go somewhere).
Anyone hoping for streaks, badges, or push notifications about places
you "might like".
