What's new in 1.52 • Shelf scan: hold your camera over a shelf and see every product's score at once, with a green dot on the approved ones. • Organic vs conventional: each ingredient now shows whether it's organic, and organic ingredients score higher. The biggest difference is for crops like soy, corn, wheat and oats. • Baby food: purees, cereals and snacks are recognized, and added sugar, rice (arsenic) and added salt lower the score. Honey gets a warning for babies under 12 months. • More aisles on Home, including Baby and Frozen, filled with top-rated products from the whole catalog. • Vitamin notes: see which form of a vitamin a fortified food uses. • Dairy Queen added to Eating out, with nutrition and allergens. • Fixes: some barcodes showed the wrong product; they now say we don't recognize the product instead.

Scan at a store, build its shelf. • Tap "Scan at Sprouts" (or any store) from that store's page, and every product you scan now counts toward its shelf — no location permission needed. Turn on location and scans from Home count too. • Store product lists load much faster: photos you contribute now get proper thumbnails. • Photo uploads are about a quarter smaller, with more detail reaching our label reader, not less.

Scan in the store, credit the store. • Scan a product inside Sprouts, Erewhon, Whole Foods or any store we recognize, and it now counts toward that store's shelf — no receipt needed. Store pages show their true product counts. • The camera now refuses to score the front of a package as an ingredient list, and tells you to turn it over. Auto-capture recognizes modern, claim-heavy fronts. • "Dairy-free" and "gluten-free" on a label no longer produce an allergen warning for the very thing they rule out. • If a product you add is held for review instead of publishing, the screen now says why. • "Why this score?" is now a Settings option, off by default, for a cleaner verdict screen.

Know what's in the fryer. • Restaurant menus now show what each item is fried in, in the restaurant's own words — and highlight the places using a single, simple oil. Where a chain doesn't publish it, we say so plainly rather than leaving a blank. • Add a product and see its verdict straight away, instead of a "we'll review it" message. • Faster, clearer product photos and a tidier verdict screen.

Eating out, and a straighter answer about what a label actually says. • Eating out (beta) — check in to a restaurant near you and scan its menu, with flagged ingredients marked in red. Switch it on in Settings. • Origin, stated honestly — a jar that says "Packaged in the USA" no longer shows as "Made in USA". You see the claim the label actually made, in its own words. • Contradiction flag — when a package claims "No MSG" but lists an ingredient that supplies it, we say so. • Scan the label with no signal — the offline path now scores a label with no connection at all. • Better label photos — hold the package at any angle and get an upright, sharp shot; small ingredient type reads without zooming; single-face packages no longer come away with no front photo at all. • Zoom while the scanner is running, and zoom into a product photo at the resolution it actually has. • Stores and chains near you now match the country you are actually in. • Product photos — a product's default photo now leads its gallery instead of being left out of it. • Your photos, credited — product photos you contribute now carry a small smartchoice.fyi mark. • A tidier verdict screen, and fixes throughout.

Auto-capture is markedly better at reading a label. It no longer discards close-up frames while the camera refocuses, it picks up small ingredient type without you zooming in, and it returns an upright photo however you were holding the package. Store lists now cover every country the app is sold in, including New Zealand and Latin America.

• Cat and dog food is now assessed by its own rules, per species — what is safe for you can be toxic for them, and the reverse is true too • Product recalls now appear as a banner on the verdict, matched to the exact barcode • Auto-capture now recognises the ingredients and nutrition panels reliably

You can add one, and everyone who scans it after you will see it. • Add up to four label photos when a long ingredient list does not fit in one shot • When a product is repackaged, its timeline now shows the old photo beside the new one • Products without a photo now show a distinct tile instead of an identical grey placeholder • Nutrition Facts are now read from the panel you photograph, so high-in-sugar and high-in-sodium warnings appear on products we could not get nutrition data for before
