Stride Guard — AI Gait Analysis for Injury Prevention This update introduces Stride Guard, RunAstra's most advanced feature to date: a real-time acoustic AI engine that listens to your footfalls while you run and warns you before small gait problems become injuries. What Stride Guard does Every runner develops micro-patterns in their stride — subtle asymmetries, cadence drops, and ground contact changes that signal fatigue or early injury risk. These changes are invisible to the eye but detectable in sound. Stride Guard uses your phone's microphone to capture the acoustic signature of your footfalls continuously during a run. Every 1 km, Astra's AI analyses the pattern for signs of gait asymmetry, stride inconsistency, and shoe cushioning degradation — and sends you a real-time alert if something looks off. Think of it as having a biomechanics coach running alongside you, listening to every step. Why Stride Guard needs background permissions Stride Guard requires two permissions that run in the background during your session: Microphone (background): Stride Guard captures your running acoustics even when your screen is locked. Runners naturally run with their phone in a pocket or an armband — the screen goes off after a few seconds. If microphone access stopped when the screen locked, Stride Guard would go silent and miss the exact footfall data it needs to analyse your gait. The microphone is only active while a Stride Guard session is running and stops the moment you end it. Location (background): Stride Guard triggers a gait analysis snapshot at every 1 km of cumulative distance. To measure that distance accurately — even with the screen locked and the app in the background — it needs access to GPS continuously during your run. Without background location, the distance counter pauses the moment your screen turns off, the 1 km checkpoints never fire, and Stride Guard cannot deliver its analysis. Your location is used solely for distance measurement during the session and is never stored or shared. Both permissions are active only for the duration of a Stride Guard session. They are never used in the background outside of an active session. How to use Stride Guard 1. Open the RunAstra app and go to the home screen. 2. Tap the Stride Guard card in the AI tools section. 3. On first launch, Astra will walk you through granting microphone access and location access — tap Allow for both, and select "Always" for location so GPS continues while your screen is locked. 4. Tap Start Session when you are ready to run. 5. Place your phone in your pocket or armband and run normally — Astra monitors every step in the background. 6. At each 1 km mark, you will receive a notification with your gait analysis snapshot. If Astra detects an anomaly, the alert will tell you specifically what it found and suggest whether to adjust your form or consider stopping. 7. Tap End Session when your run is complete.
