I Hate Reading Dyslexia Helper
Reading kids actually love
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
New: your child draws an idea, snaps a photo, and it becomes their own chapter book — with their artwork on the cover. Dyslexia-friendly and safe by design.
Some kids say it before they can even spell it: "I hate reading." Usually it isn't laziness — reading is genuinely hard for them, and every page feels like proof they're not good enough. I Hate Reading was built to change that feeling, one story at a time. (The crossed-out "hate" in our name says it all.)
Here's how it works: your child speaks or types a story idea — "a brave hamster who builds a rocket," "a dragon who's scared of the dark" — and the app writes them their very own chapter book, starring the characters they chose, at exactly their reading level. When the hero is YOU, suddenly reading is worth the effort.
CAN'T FIND THE WORDS? DRAW IT.
Some kids freeze at a blank page but will happily draw for an hour. Your child can draw their idea on paper, take a picture of it, and the app turns that drawing into a whole chapter book — with their own artwork as the cover. You always see what the app thinks it's looking at, and can fix it in one tap before the story is written.
A GENTLE READING TUTOR
Your child reads aloud and the app listens, quietly highlighting each line and keeping their place — patient, never buzzing "wrong." It's like a calm grown-up sitting beside them. (All speech recognition happens on the device — your child's voice is never uploaded.)
BUILT FOR HOW DYSLEXIC KIDS ACTUALLY READ
- Reading Comfort spacing: adjustable letter, word, and line spacing. Research on dyslexia points to spacing — not just special fonts — as one of the most effective ways to reduce the visual "crowding" that makes letters blur together. Find the spacing that clicks for your child.
- A dyslexia-friendly font option (OpenDyslexic) plus calmer "bookstore" fonts to grow into.
- Short, uncluttered pages with a soft reading-guide band, on an easy-on-the-eyes background.
- Tap any word to hear it read aloud.
"READ IT AGAIN!" — FLUENCY THAT STICKS
Re-reading the same passage and beating your own time is one of the best-proven ways to build reading fluency. Tap "Read it again" and the app cheers every time your child reads a chapter a little faster than before.
GROWS WITH YOUR CHILD
The app tracks reading fluency over time and gently nudges the difficulty up toward a goal you set — so stories stay challenging enough to grow, but never so hard they give up.
SAFE BY DESIGN — YOU CAN RELAX
Because children create the story ideas themselves, safety is built in at every step. Every prompt and every page of generated text passes through multiple content-safety filters designed to keep stories wholesome and age-appropriate. Children cannot make the app produce sexual, violent, hateful, or self-harm content — if an idea isn't okay, the app simply offers a friendly nudge toward a happy adventure instead. No accounts, no ads, no third-party tracking, and no data collected about your child. Reading progress stays on your device.
A PARENT AREA, BEHIND A SIMPLE GATE
A quick math gate keeps the settings and the progress dashboard for grown-ups: reading level and goal, fonts and spacing, daily reading-time goal, and your child's fluency trend.
Made by a parent and researcher for a daughter who used to dread reading. We can't promise miracles — but we can promise stories worth turning the page for.

READ-ALOUD FOLLOW-ALONG NOW STAYS WITH YOUR READER
If the highlight had started jumping ahead or drifting off the word your child was reading, this update fixes it. We rebuilt how the app matches their voice to the page and moved to Apple's newer on-device speech engine — so the highlight sits on the word they're actually reading, and keeps up through a whole chapter. Their voice still never leaves the iPad.
CAN'T FIND THE WORDS? DRAW IT.
Some kids freeze at a blank page but will happily draw for an hour. Now your child can draw their idea on paper, snap a picture of it, and the app turns that drawing into their very own chapter book — with their artwork right on the cover.
EVERY STORY FEELS DIFFERENT NOW
We rebuilt how stories are planned. New books no longer fall back on the same handful of character names, the same settings, and the same shape every time — each one gets its own place, mood and kind of adventure. Names your child picks always come first, every time.
ALSO IN THIS UPDATE
- A fresh look for the home and welcome screens. The reading pages themselves stay exactly as calm and uncluttered as before — that part was never up for redesign.
- Clearer, more inviting chapter titles.
- An easier-to-read New Story screen, with a bigger, friendlier microphone.
- Layout fixes so everything sits properly on iPad.
