BirdScribe 3.8 brings a new way to capture birds in the field. The capture dock One big mic for a bird. Tap, say what you saw, tap again for the next one. Trip note, Incidental and Your Call are now one tap away, right above the mic. Slide the dock down to a slim bar when you want more of your list on screen. Speak or type Switch between speaking and typing with one tap. BirdScribe remembers your choice. Typing works the eBird way: count first, then the name. Type “3 mistl” and Mistletoebird x3 is at the top of the list. Tick or Return takes it. Suggestions drop down as you type, local birds first. See your trip your way Expanded shows each bird as a full card. Compact shows your whole trip as one tidy list. Each mode remembers the view you like. Notes Trip notes and bird notes now share one simple note sheet. Cues that follow you Earphones in, cues go to your earphones automatically. No earphones, choose Sound or Vibrate. The silent switch is followed as you go. Forgot to log one? Add a bird you missed and set the time you saw it. Smaller things Nothing in BirdScribe reacts to shaking or moving your phone, so a bird can’t be undone by accident in your pocket. No end-of-trip prompt to send your notes. A shorter header gives more room to your list. Eyes up, birds in.

A big update with better accuracy and lots of fixes. - Better at hearing what you said: fewer wrong birds, wrong counts and stray cards, and old bird names now log as today's species. - Teach a name once and the app offers to fix it across your whole trip. - Other wildlife (mammals, butterflies, reptiles) gets its own green cards, copied into your trip notes and never sent to eBird as birds. - Incidental sightings use the normal card, with clip, location and map pin. - Big trips on the map show one pin per spot with a count. - Trim a recording right from its card. - A chip under the mic shows your beep mode (Sound, Vibrate or Earphones only), and Bluetooth headphones keep their beeps. - Your trip keeps the place you finished, and each sighting gets its own fresh location. - Clearer eBird export steps, and a tidier merge for birds logged twice.

BirdScribe 3.6 is our biggest update yet. YOUR CALL - Record a bird's song or call with one tap, then name it with the species. Recordings are kept in your own Your Calls library. - Catch the seconds before you tap: during a trip, iPhone can hold the last few seconds of sound so the start of a call isn't lost. On by default, off in one tap. - Trim, rename, share and export your recordings, one at a time or all together. - Your Call replaces Song. Sound ID has been removed: you name the bird, as you would in the field. FASTER IN THE FIELD - Start the mic with the Action Button, Back Tap or your earbuds. - Every press starts a new take, so you can log bird after bird without stopping. - Pocket Mode now ignores every tap on the screen, so nothing changes in your pocket. EBIRD HOTSPOTS - Nearby eBird hotspots suggested for your trip, and they work offline too. TRIPS AND EXPORT - Trip weather added to your checklist comment. - Clearer export steps. Export for eBird saves your file and opens eBird's import page. - When you travel, BirdScribe asks before changing your region. - Select and delete several trips or learned names at once, with undo. BACKUP - Back up your trips and learned names to your own iCloud Drive, and restore them on a new phone. Your backup never comes to us. FEEDBACK - Attach a trip or up to three voice clips, so we can hear exactly what was misheard. Plus lots of fixes to make logging faster and more reliable.

What's new in 3.4 Logging by voice - Name several birds in one breath and each keeps its own count. "Two grey herons, little egret, great egret" gives 2, 1, 1. - No number said now logs 1, seen or heard. Say "present" to log without a count. - Auto-log handles "male", "female" and "juvenile" and records them for you. - Say "undo" to remove the last bird logged. - Say "new total of" to correct a count by voice. - Add a spoken note with "note to self" or "note at the feeder". - Better punctuation in your transcripts. Checking your list - "Which species?" cards show only the words they're asking about, with the full sentence a tap away. - Your words are back on Review, so you can check what you said before exporting. - Where did I see it? Search any bird to see every sighting on a map. - Tick several birds at once when tidying up. Region and eBird - eBird exports always follow your GPS, even if you've picked a region by hand. The header shows both when they differ. - Picking a region by hand is always clearly shown. - Add a checklist comment before exporting. - Your export file stays on your device. eBird-ready names. Every species in your export is spelled the way eBird expects, capitals, hyphens and apostrophes included, so your checklist uploads clean first go. Your region stays put. Browse back through earlier trips while you're out, and the app keeps working in the region you're actually standing in. Species and call checks are read-only. Look anything up as often as you like; your saved default region is only changed when you change it..

Learned names are now yours to choose. BirdScribe no longer creates them on its own. When you have said a bird your own way and the card comes back right, press the bolt on that card. The phrase becomes a learned name and starts logging straight through next time. Press the bolt again to turn logging off. The phrase stays in your list as a suggestion. The bolt sits on every card. Where a phrase cannot be learned it is greyed out, and pressing it tells you why. Your existing learned names are untouched. Also fixed: two learned names in one sentence now make two cards. Say "two misty five sulphur" and you get both birds with both counts.

What's new in 3.1 Auto-log: teach BirdScribe a phrase once and, if you choose, that exact phrase logs the bird without a tap next time. Switch it on or off from the card or from Learned names. Nothing is logged without your say so. Learned names redesigned: your names first, search on top, backup and sharing moved below the list. Complete checklist switch on the Session Summary, so an incidental or a partial walk goes to eBird as an incomplete list. Teach names for a region before you travel there. Your chosen region wins over GPS. Counts: ranges take the lower figure with a note, repeated numbers no longer double up, and number-word species such as Forty-spotted Pardalote are recognised correctly. Common mishearings corrected on screen (gulls, herring, reed, house), with your original words kept. Built-in traditional names, including British names, can be promoted to your own learned names. Optional anonymous sharing of your learned names to improve suggestions for birders in your region. Fixes to GPS start, session resume, sound bite capture, merge after a session has ended, and the eBird CSV.

Capture a call by tapping the sound bite button or saying "sound bite", and BirdScribe suggests the species with a confidence score. The species appears on the card and you confirm it with a single tap. Works hands-free in Pocket Mode, and your recordings are always saved even if analysis is briefly offline. Better checklists. Merge duplicate sightings before export, keep every recording on a merged card with its own ID, and see at a glance which observations will and will not reach your eBird checklist. Smarter sessions. BirdScribe now asks before continuing a trip from another day or another site, so one checklist stays one date and one place. Also improved: larger controls for one-handed field use, clearer permission requests, export confirmations, and undo when you remove a clip.

Bird song capture Say "sound bite" while recording and BirdScribe starts capturing the bird instead of your voice. Tap to stop, say "all done", or leave it and it closes itself at 45 seconds. Already know the bird? Say its name straight after the trigger: "sound bite, rufous fantail". That saves the recording and logs a heard only observation, ready for eBird. Your recordings Song captures are saved to your phone as lossless audio and listed under the music note in the Trips header. They stay on the device, they are never uploaded, and deleting a trip does not delete them. Find them in the Files app under On My iPhone, BirdScribe, recordings. Build your own reference library and learn the calls of the birds you actually see. Also in this release Heard only observations now honour a stated count. Three kookaburras calling exports as three. Siri recognises Bird Scribe as a spoken app name.
