Update 1.9.2 - an improvement update that refines how page turns respond with translation on, and how webtoons and the library feel to use. ■ Turning Pages with Translation · In books you have pre-translated, the speech bubbles on the next page now stay translated even while the page is turning. · Added “Pre-translate Next Page” to the Translation section of Settings. With it on, the next page is pre-translated while you read the current one, so even in a book you are reading for the first time, you see the translated page as soon as you turn to it. It is off by default. · Reduced the brief pause when turning the first page after turning on translation. · Made the translated text in speech bubbles with vertical Japanese text larger, to suit the size of the bubble. ■ Webtoons · Reduced scrolling stutter when the next chapter is added below and when your reading position is saved. · Changed the “Recognizing” notice, which often flickered while scrolling a webtoon with translation on, so that it appears only when recognition takes a long time. ■ Library · When grouping by artist, the app now also reads the author name in a PDF’s document information, and names that differ only in spacing are grouped as one author. · Fixed an issue where changing the sort or grouping in the middle of a list jumped to the end of the list. The new list is now shown from the top. · If you lock a folder again while reading a book, the library reflects it right away, even before you close the reader. ■ Wording Across Languages · Corrected the singular and plural forms of phrases with a number, such as the number of volumes, in English and several other languages. · Fixed the wording in Komga server book lists, where the page count looked like a page number. Update 1.9.1 - a major update that brings together the requests you sent me by email and in reviews. ■ Continuous Webtoon · In Webtoon mode, when you scroll down to the end of a chapter, the next chapter continues right below it, so you can read a series without a break. Only the title is shown where one chapter ends and the next begins. · It is on by default, and you can turn it off with “Continuous Webtoon” under “Read” in Settings. Series on a Komga server, and books you added from OPDS as a single series list, continue in the same way. · Books made of long vertical images open in Webtoon mode the first time you open them. ■ Tab Bar and Resume · Added a tab bar at the bottom of the iPhone screen with “Library”, “Resume”, “Online” and “Settings”. · Added a “Resume” row that gathers the books you are reading at the very top of “Entire Library”. To take a book out of the row, touch and hold it and choose “Hide from Resume”. ■ Direct Komga Server Connection · Register a Komga server with “Add Server” in “Import from Server”, and you can browse and search its libraries and series, and stream or download books. Komga 1.19 or later is required. · Your reading position is synced with the Komga server, so you can pick up where you left off on another device or in the Komga web interface, and the books you are reading are gathered in the “Keep Reading” row. · When you read via OPDS as well, the reading position recorded on the server is used as the point to resume from. ■ Folder Import · For folders where it is unclear whether the whole folder should become one book or each file inside should become its own book, the app now asks you to choose when you import. For folders you have already imported, touch and hold them in “Imported Folders” and choose “Change Import Method” to switch, and your reading positions are kept. · Fixed an issue where comic files and subfolders were left out when importing a folder that contains both images and comic files. Books that were left out of folders you have already imported are added automatically. · If a folder with comic files contains an image named cover or folder, that image is shown as the folder’s cover. If you have set a cover yourself, that one is used first. ■ Delete Original File Too · When you remove a book imported from a folder or the Files app from your library, choosing “Delete Original File Too” deletes the original file as well. · Deleted files are moved to “Recently Deleted” in the Files app. However, files in locations without a trash folder (such as a NAS) are permanently deleted right away, so please be careful. ■ Translation · The default source language is now “Auto-Detect”, so the app determines for each book whether it is in Japanese, Chinese, Korean or English before translating. The first time you open a book, this takes a few seconds, and if you have set the source language yourself, that setting is kept. · Reduced cases where only some lines of vertical text in speech bubbles were translated. · Reduced cases where the translation background covered speech bubble outlines, screentones and even the surrounding artwork. · Fixed an issue where, on devices set to Korean or Japanese, Chinese translations used mixed fonts or showed Chinese characters in different shapes. · To apply the improved translation, books are translated anew after the update instead of using previously saved translations. Update 1.8.3 - adds Change Cover, which you asked for, plus a way to see the update history right inside the app. ■ Change Cover · I added “Change Cover” to the menu that appears when you touch and hold a book in the library. You can pick an image from the Files app or the Photos app and use it as the cover right away. · You can switch a changed cover back to the original at any time with “Restore Original Cover” in the same menu. · With iCloud Sync turned on, changed covers also apply on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. ■ What’s New · The first time you open the app after an update, it shows you once what changed in that update. · In Settings, under “Support · About”, you can see the full update history for every version so far. ■ Fixes · Fixed an issue where iPhone, iPad, and Mac recognized the same PDF as different books, so your reading position, favorites, and the way you organized My Folders didn't carry over to Mac. Once all your devices are updated to 1.8.3, everything carries over, and the records for your existing PDFs are moved over as they are the first time you open the app after updating. Update 1.8.2 - official support for iPhone Duo, plus refinements based on the reports you sent me that make manga and webtoons split into chapters easier to read one after another. ■ Official iPhone Duo support · The app now uses the entire unfolded inner screen, without the black bars that used to appear above and beside the content. · In two-page view, the center seam now lines up with the fold, and I placed the reader's buttons and bars so they don't sit on the fold. Pages stay put even when you hold the device half-folded like a book. · I reorganized the top buttons into symbol buttons like those in the built-in iOS apps, so the side toolbar also shows each button's symbol and name. ■ Sorting by chapter number · I improved sorting so titles written with Chinese numerals, such as 第一话·第十二巻, are also sorted in number order. · I refined the sorting rules so decimal chapters such as 第1.5话, 上·中·下 parts, 前·后篇, seasons and side stories also land in their proper places. · The same order also applies to books newly added to folders you have ordered yourself and to NAS folder lists. ■ Keep reading with previous and next chapters · Reach the end and a “Next Chapter” card appears; reach the beginning and a “Previous Chapter” card appears. I improved webtoon mode so these cards also appear right away every time you reach the end or the very top. · When you go back to the previous chapter from the first page, you can continue from that chapter's last page. · For series split into chapters, cards and navigation messages say “Chapter” instead of “Book”. · Numbers that start with #, like “#723”, are now recognized as chapter numbers, and when a long title is shortened at the top of the reader, the chapter number stays visible. · “Auto-Advance” now keeps going after it moves on from the end of a chapter to the next chapter. ■ “Previous File / Next File” at the bottom of the reader · I changed “Volume navigation buttons” in Settings to “File navigation buttons”. With it on, you can jump straight from the bottom of the reader to the previous or next file in the same folder, in the order they sit in your library. · Moving on to the next book or chapter still works from the card that appears at the end. I also refined the card's “Read Now” button to have the same glass look as the other buttons. ■ Fixes · Fixed an issue where the app could quit if you deleted a book from the library while its tracker connection window or pre-translation confirmation window was open. · Fixed an issue in webtoon mode where, with auto-trim margins on, the next chapter card didn't appear or the book wasn't marked as finished even after you scrolled down to the last panel. · Webtoon mode now keeps your reading position better when you rotate the screen or fold and unfold your device. · Fixed files with % in their names showing under a different name on WebDAV servers. · Fixed short TXT files under 1,000 characters showing as “0K characters”; they now show the actual character count. · Fixed the TXT table of contents not finding chapter titles that contain 零·两·万, such as “第一百零一章”. · Fixed an issue in Smart Two-Page where going to the last page of a book opened for the first time could stop just before the last page, or the “Next Chapter” card could appear before the last spread was settled. Update 1.8.1 - fixes and refinements based on your questions and reports. ■ New app icon · I redesigned the app icon. It also fits the Dark and Tinted Home Screen styles. · To keep the old penguin icon, choose “Classic Penguin” under “App Icon” in Settings. · The launch logo and the iPhone/iPad sidebar title, which got cut off, now use the new logo. ■ Set your own book order · Drag books on the shelf into place, or use “Reorder” in the right-click menu (long press on iPhone/iPad), to order books in a folder. · My Folders order syncs across devices via iCloud. Imported Folders order stays on that device and also applies to previous/next volume in the viewer. ■ Webtoon mode translation, fully supported · Webtoon mode translation, temporarily disabled in 1.8.0, is back. · Long vertical images are now read in parts, finding missed speech balloons. · While scrolling, only the panel in view and those just above and below are translated, reducing scroll stalls. ■ Narrower webtoon width · In webtoon mode, pinch in with two fingers to narrow the strip. The width is kept next time. · A new setting locks scrolling vertically, so the view no longer drifts sideways. ■ New features · “Share…” in a book cover's menu sends the book file to another app or device. · In “When the App Opens” in Settings, pick the first screen or reopen your last book right away. · Page through webtoons one screen at a time by keyboard. Auto-scroll keeps going after you drag and let go. ■ Sidebar and shelf layout · Reorder the four sidebar groups (Library, Recent, Imported Folders, My Folders) and your folders. The order is saved per device. · In selection mode, slide a finger across books to select several at once. ■ Imported Folders auto-check · Add books to an imported folder via the Files app or Finder, then open it: new books are added to the shelf right away. On iPhone/iPad you can also pull down on the shelf to refresh. · Books whose originals you delete in Files or Finder leave the shelf automatically. Books on a briefly disconnected external drive or NAS stay, and if many vanish at once, the app asks first. ■ NAS and servers · Fixed NAS (SMB) downloads running to the end even after you chose to cancel. · While a large book downloads from a server, the top-left button closes the screen right away. · If a NAS on the same network can't be reached with a VPN on, the app suggests turning the VPN off. Opening a file renamed or deleted on the server shows a clear message. ■ iPhone Duo and large screens · The “One page at a time in portrait” switch is gone from Settings. “Smart Two-Page” now decides by screen ratio: one page in portrait, two in landscape. For two pages in portrait, choose “Two-Page”. · On wide screens, the viewer's top buttons show their names and sit clear of the fold of an unfolded iPhone Duo. ■ Sync and reading history · Fixed an issue where just opening and closing an EPUB or TXT read on another device reset your position to the start. · Folder changes and Resume from other devices now apply while the app is open, and older records no longer overwrite newer ones. · If the app quits suddenly during a webtoon, your position, recent history and reading statistics are kept. · Mitigated an issue where an EPUB read on another device opened at the chapter's first page instead of your page. ■ Privacy · With App Lock on, widgets, Spotlight search and Shortcuts no longer show book covers, titles or reading progress. · Fixed hidden books briefly appearing in Entire Library when the app was reopened. ■ Mac · With several windows open, notices and purchase windows appeared in each one, and the app could quit while closing them. I fixed this: they now appear only in the window you clicked. ■ Other fixes · In libraries with very many books, the first screen at launch now appears much sooner. Update 1.8.0 - a large overhaul that brings together your many requests and my own ideas. ■ Full iPhone Duo support · I have added a dedicated interface and a wide range of features for iPhone Duo. I look forward to your response and your feedback. ■ Page curl · A page-turn effect that naturally follows the movement of your finger has been added. · I found and fixed a flaw in the existing page-turn structure. In Japanese manga order, the page now turns in the same direction as your swipe and your keyboard shortcuts. ■ Webtoon auto-scroll · A feature only for webtoon mode: it keeps scrolling even after you lift your finger. I have refined it further. · Please note that translation in webtoon mode will be fully supported in the next update. Until then I am disabling that feature for the time being. ■ Translation · Text in speech balloons being cut off or covered has been greatly reduced. · Translated text no longer overlaps when balloons are crowded on one side of the page. · I am working to fix translation in webtoon mode as soon as possible. Translation in webtoon mode is temporarily disabled. ■ Settings · In Settings you can set the reading direction (RtL, LtR, automatic detection) for every book at once. ■ Other fixes · Fixed the previous page showing for an instant during the page-turn effect. · Fixed the vertical bar that always stayed on the right when reading webtoons on Mac.

■ Choose a Translation Mode · Settings > Translation Wizard now has Translation Mode: Low latency or Quality first. · Low latency is faster. Quality first reads more naturally and takes longer. · It starts on Low latency. · Performance is measured in the mode you picked, matching the speed you see on screen. · On iOS 26.4 and macOS 26.4 or later. ■ After you update · Pages you already translated are translated again in the chosen mode when you next open them. · The Leaderboard starts over on the new basis. Your record is still there even if the list looks empty. · Both lines apply to iOS 26.4 and macOS 26.4 or later. ■ Translating ahead · While a whole book is translated ahead, the device rests if it gets hot, and in Low Power Mode. · Press Cancel and it stops at once. You can start again or go on to another book. · The stop button on the Lock Screen card and the Dynamic Island has the same behavior. ■ Leaderboard · The record sheet writes down every item it sends, translation mode and time included. · The top of the Leaderboard says which mode you are competing in. · Records from before you changed the mode get no rank. Measure again in the new mode and a rank appears. · The share card's bottom line says which mode was measured, since the same device scores differently in another mode. · The Low latency and Quality first labels appear on iOS 26.4 and macOS 26.4 or later. ■ Siri · Shortcuts · Say "Continue reading in Penguin Viewer" to open your current book, or "Open [title] in Penguin Viewer" to pick one from your library. · The Shortcuts app has two actions, Continue Reading and Open Book. Spotlight finds books too. · Books in a hidden folder are left out. ■ Import · Move or copy the same book elsewhere and import it again and it merges into one, keeping reading position and bookmarks. · Text files of the same size are compared by content too. Two that differ only at the end stay two books. · Failed files are reported, counted like 1 book added · 1 book failed, with the file name and the reason. · Press Cancel and it stops at once. iCloud files not downloaded yet are skipped, not opened. · Refresh no longer counts files not downloaded yet as failures. It only says how many there are. · For a 7z file the free memory is measured against the unpacked size. Several are opened one at a time. ■ Accessibility · VoiceOver reads the page number and the translated speech balloons in reading order. · Balloons are read only on pages you have translated. · The Page navigation bar works with VoiceOver. Swipe up or down to move a page and hear where you are. ■ Settings · Settings on iPhone is now three levels: list, item, detail. Pro is the first row; tapping it before you buy opens the purchase screen. ■ Webtoon · The gaps above and below are gone. Pinch zoom grows from the point between your fingers, and you can move around while zoomed in. ■ iCloud sync · Reading position and folder organization changed on another device follow shortly with the app open, with no need to leave the library and return. · Edit on two devices offline and reconnect, and both edits are kept. · The folder organization file no longer shows in the Files app, and hidden folder names are hidden with it. · Folder organization syncs only with 1.7.3 on both devices. If one is older, it waits until that device updates. ■ Fixes · JPEG XL images inside EPUB text are shown. · .jxl pages inside archives and folders, and EPUB cover images, are shown on iOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2 or later. · EPUB page counts survive a minor OS update, so books are not counted from the start again. · Fixed the purple flash at the bottom of the iPhone sidebar while scrolling. · Fixed the sidebar's selected row showing black text on a purple plate on iPad and iPhone in landscape.

■ Hide Folder · Hide a folder and its subfolders from the library, Resume, Favorites, and search results. They also leave your reading stats, reading calendar, and widgets. · Opening a hidden folder asks for Face ID or your device passcode. On Mac it asks for Touch ID or your login password. · Your files stay where they are. Nothing is moved or encrypted. The hidden setting follows you to your other devices through iCloud. · Long-press or right-click a folder and choose Hide Folder. ■ Leaderboard · One record per device. Measure again and your previous record is replaced with the newest one. · After you submit, the sheet closes and the leaderboard opens. · Your device's memory size is recorded too. It shows as 8GB and the like on ranking rows and the share card. · The button is now Submit to leaderboard, and buttons are fully opaque. The measuring and intro screens use the same arcade look as the results screen. ■ Sidebar · Sections are now Library, Recent (last 5 books), Imported Folders, and My Folders. · A folder badge counts only the books directly inside it. · On iPhone the bottom tool card no longer covers the last row. ■ Fixes · Deleting a manga that was imported as a folder no longer leaves an empty folder in the sidebar.

■ Purchase and payment fixes · Fixed the free page limit and the purchase screen showing up on devices that already own lifetime Pro when the network was unstable. Your device now remembers its Pro status, so it holds even when Apple's servers cannot be reached. · Fixed Restore Purchases doing nothing on tap or waiting forever. It now shows progress, and a device that already bought Pro is restored right away. · If the purchase screen cannot load prices, it now tells you so. If the trouble continues, send us the diagnostic code at the bottom of the purchase screen.

■ Local AI Translation Benchmark · Measure how fast your device translates a page of manga. Run it from Translation in Settings. · The result is a single PVScore. A bigger number means a faster device. · The results screen is CRT arcade, scanlines and all. Novels and text books are here — this update comes from your requests and reports. • Read novels and text books — import TXT, MD and EPUB files and read them. Font, text size, line spacing, margins and background color are in “Text & Layout” at the top of the reader, and chapters are in “Contents.” Your reading position and bookmarks carry over. • Translate as you read — select a sentence or translate the whole page on your device and read it next to the original. Word meanings come straight from the dictionary. • Pinch to zoom in Webtoon — zoom with two fingers in vertical scroll and drag while zoomed in. • Switch books anytime — tap the page and the previous book and next book buttons are always there. • Better search — search runs on the search button or Return, so typing stays smooth in a large library. • New reader design — top, bottom and side controls share one floating glass style. • Page Order — if the file names are capture codes and the pages come out shuffled, set “Page Order” to “By Date Modified.” Position and bookmarks follow the same pages. • PDF quality — PDF comics render at your screen's resolution; PDFs from photos keep their original quality. • Show time left — how long is left in this book, from your reading speed. • Reading Calendar — look back on which days you read, and how much. • Auto Night Theme — at the hour you set, the reader background turns black. • View settings preview — change a value and see the result right away. New: import comics straight from the Photos app. Pick an album and its photos become one book in album order, copied at original quality and processed only on your device. If you would rather not grant photo access, there is also “Pick Photos to Import”. The feature came from a user's suggestion. The entries under “Imported Folders” in the sidebar can now be dragged into any order you want (on iPhone and iPad, press and hold, then drag). Fixed on Mac: with comics in your Library, the app could freeze or quit right after launch. Tidying up the Library while a comic was open also left the reader window black. Other fixes: covers of newly imported books stayed blurry, image folders you imported directly never showed up under “Imported Folders”, and two folders with the same name were merged into one (they are now told apart by path). Thanks to everyone who reported these.

Someone wrote in to say imported images looked blurry, especially long vertical webtoons — pages were being drawn far smaller than the screen could show. Pages now use the resolution your display actually has, so long webtoons keep their full width, and zooming reloads the page at a higher resolution instead of stretching a shrunken copy. Covers on the shelf are sharper too, and large images are easier on memory. Thanks for the report that led us to it.

Page turns now have a look you choose — none, slide, fade, or page curl, with slide as the default. Two-page view gains a single-page advance, so you can shift the spread by one when a cover throws the pairing off. Auto-scroll finally uses the full refresh rate on ProMotion (120Hz) iPhones and holds a steady speed even when a frame slips; on Mac it follows your display. With Reduce Motion on, the effects ease off by themselves.

Webtoon (vertical scroll) mode now has a progress bar. Open the menu and it appears at the bottom, sharing a card with the auto-scroll control—drag it to jump to any page, with your current and total position in view. The side progress bar from Settings now works in webtoon mode too, along with small refinements. Thanks for asking for this.
