Duane: Texas Road Stories
Texas history as you drive
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
More than 16,000 Texas historical markers, and almost nobody reads them. Start Drive Mode and Duane tells you their stories out loud as you drive past, hands free.
Texas has more historical markers than any other state. More than 16,000 of them, across all 254 counties, each one telling you what happened right where you're standing. Most folks drive right past.
Duane reads them to you.
Start Drive Mode and he keeps an eye on the road ahead. When a marker is coming up, he tells you its story out loud. No tapping, no pulling over, eyes on the road.
He's named after my grandfather. He loved back roads and never could pass a marker without stopping to read it. That's pretty much the whole idea.
Not every marker earns a story, so we picked the best ones. More than 7,700 of the most interesting markers in Texas are told in Duane's own voice, recorded with the kind of easy, campfire delivery the good ones deserve. The rest, he reads to you straight.
You can hear it two ways. Classic Texas is the marker's own words, read plain. Tall Tale is those same facts told the way your granddad might have told them. The facts don't change. Only the delivery does.
And you decide how much Duane talks. Highlights keeps it to the best stories, the ones worth slowing down for. Balanced is a good mix. Everything means he leaves nothing out, all of Texas history, marker by marker.
There's more to explore when you're parked.
Sleep Mode is the bedtime stories of Texas. Set a timer, turn out the light, and Duane tells Texas tales in his own voice until you drift off.
On This Day pulls up a marker tied to today's date, fresh every morning.
Explore lets you wander the whole map, search a town or county, or filter by what you're after. Civil War. Outlaws and lawmen. Ghost towns. The oil boom. Strange but true.
And it keeps track of what you've heard, lets you save the ones worth a second visit, and hands you a badge here and there.
It's built for the road. The whole marker collection lives on your phone, so it works with no signal at all. Duane only checks your location while you're driving, and it stays on your phone. No account to make. No ads. Nobody tracking you.
The marker text comes straight from the Texas Historical Commission, so the facts are always the marker's own. Duane is free to download.
Climb in. Texas has been waiting to tell you something.
