Rakkan: Chat Translator
Couple video calls & captions
Only for iPhone
Free · In‑App Purchases
Built for couples who don't share a language. See what they'll actually read before you send, and talk on video with live translated captions. Free, no card needed.
Rakkan is a chat app for couples who don't share a first language.
You type in your language, your partner reads it in theirs, and it actually sounds like you. Not a robotic word swap. Rakkan learns the context of your relationship, your nicknames, the way you talk to each other, the people and places you mention, and it keeps that context in every message.
Before anything sends, Rakkan shows you how your message reads back in your own language, so you always know exactly what your partner is about to see. And when a phrase would land wrong in their language, Rakkan warns you first, or simply asks which meaning you meant.
What you can do:
- Chat in real time, each of you in your own language
- See the "reads back as" check on every message before it lands
- Video call with live translated captions, so you can talk face to face even when the words don't match
- Send voice and video messages that arrive with a translated transcript
- Put one phone on the table between you and let it interpret out loud when you are finally together
- Schedule a good morning for their sunrise, not yours
- Share photos, albums, GIFs and stickers made from your own photos
- Hear their messages read aloud in a voice that sounds like them
- React, reply, edit, star and search your whole history
- Rakkan quietly remembers the things that matter, birthdays, anniversaries, names, so you don't have to
- Make the app yours with themes, wallpapers and your own bubble style
- At the end of the year, see your story: every message, call and photo, counted
Built for long-distance and cross-language couples who are tired of copy-pasting into a translator and losing the meaning every time.
Languages
The app itself speaks 23 languages, including English, Thai, Khmer, Lao, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, French, German, Italian and Slovak, and it translates between almost any language pair automatically.
Private by design
Rakkan is made for two people. Conversations are private, between adults who have accepted each other's request. You must be 18 or older to use it.

more A small card in your chat list now asks how Rakkan is working for you, so you can tell us in one tap when something is off. And Settings has a new Rate Rakkan button, because reviews are how other couples find us.

You can now reach Settings and your other chats while on a video call: minimize the call and the app is yours again. Messages arriving in other chats show as small pop-ups over the call, so nothing slips by while you talk.
Also fixed: sending a message during a call sometimes buzzed as if it failed even though it had actually sent. The app now waits for real proof of delivery before ever calling a send failed.
1.1.48 1d ago
Switching your active chat now shows exactly when the next switch will be available, with a heads-up before you commit. And if your partner reaches their daily writing limit, you will see why the conversation paused and when it resumes, so silence never reads the wrong way.
Also in this update: the typing box in video calls shrinks back after each sent message, and live captions recover faster and say what went wrong instead of staying silent.
1.1.47 3d ago
A daily streak for the two of you: send three messages each and a flame appears beside your chat, counting every day in a row you keep it alive. It dims at midnight and lights again the moment today is complete, and the flame changes as the months add up. Gentle reminders arrive in the morning and late afternoon while today's streak is still waiting.
Also in this update: the app wakes up and catches up faster when you open it from a notification, and live captions now recover on their own instead of going quiet for the rest of a call.
1.1.46 5d ago
Text during video calls: type instead of talking, and your messages appear right where captions would, translated live. Part of Rakkan Plus. Switch between captions and typed messages in Settings under Call captions.
Also in this update: clearer voice note feedback when nothing was heard, fairer caption minute counting, and translation accuracy improvements.
1.1.45 Aug 24
Quiet moments on video calls just got prettier: captions can now hide themselves after a few seconds of silence, so nothing covers the picture, and they come back the instant either of you speaks. Turn it on in Settings under Call captions.
The photo and video buttons on calls can be stacked vertically now instead of side by side. Yours to arrange in Settings.
Read receipts finally talk to each other: read a chat on one device and the unread badge on your iPhone clears too, instead of waiting for you to open the app.
Translation understands time better. Messages about things that already happened stay in the past tense, both in what your partner reads and in the read-back you check before sending.
Plus smaller fixes and polish throughout.
1.1.44 Aug 21
Push to listen: a new way to run live call captions. Hold the caption button while you speak and release it while you listen, so your caption minutes only count when your words are actually being translated. Find it in Settings under Call captions. Auto captions stay the default, and the button can be dragged anywhere on the call screen.
Call settings are now easier to find: captions have their own section, and call photos and videos have theirs.
Fixes:
- The call screen could stop responding to taps while captions were on screen, which made it hard to reach the hang up button. Fixed.
- Caption minutes could keep counting after your captions had already run out mid call. They stop now, and topping up mid call gives you every minute you paid for.
- Saving a video now says Save video, and video messages show a proper notification preview.
- Auto-save media now saves only real photos and videos, not GIFs and stickers.
- Smoother photo and video capture during calls, with fixes for taps that could trigger accidentally.

Rakkan comes to your Home and Lock Screen. New widgets show your partner's name, their local time, whether it's day or night for them, and your unread count at a glance. Add them from the widget gallery.
Rakkan Plus: a small optional add-on that keeps every translation instant for both of you, all day. Messages on the free plan stay unlimited and full quality, always.
Record up to 5 minutes of a video call: a new one-time unlock raises the recording limit on any plan. Premium now record longer clips out of the box.
The in-call camera buttons are yours now: drag them anywhere on the screen, split photo and video apart, or hide them entirely in Settings, Call captions.
The nickname you gave your partner now follows them everywhere: notifications, your daily digest, and your Connections list.
Plus fixes and polish throughout.
1.1.42 Aug 16
• Record videos on your calls: save up to 30 seconds of your partner's video straight to your gallery. Hold the button to record, or tap to start and tap again to stop. Your partner always sees when a photo or video is captured, and either of you can turn capture off in Settings
• The in-call camera buttons now stay on screen for the whole call, and you can drag them to any corner
• Live call captions now offer all 23 app languages
• A shorter, friendlier sign-up: three small steps with a progress bar, and your first step already done
• Stickers and GIFs now display without a frame, chat wallpapers got a visual fix, and the sticker drawer pulls up to full height
• Smarter translations: more fixes for tricky sentences, like keeping straight whose things you are both talking about
• Various fixes and polish across chat, calls, and translation
1.1.41 Aug 11
Make your own stickers! Cut yourself out of any photo and send it as a sticker, then reuse your favorites from the new My Stickers tray.
A better photo editor: pinch to zoom, crop, and undo any step.
Message effects: birthdays and celebrations now come with a little magic.
Rakkan now asks for your date of birth, once. Rakkan is for adults 18 and over, and your age helps the translator pick the right kind of language for you. Whether your age or birthday is visible to anyone is entirely your choice, in your profile settings.
Times you mention in chat now show correctly in both of your time zones.
Smarter, more faithful translations and plenty of small fixes.
1.1.40 Aug 10
• A partner plan is here: one subscription now covers both of you. Pick your partner by their exact @handle when you subscribe, and their account is upgraded automatically, for about 30% less than paying for two separate plans
• You can change who holds the partner seat, or free it up entirely, any time from Plan settings
• Running low on live-caption minutes during a call? Add more without hanging up: a quick in-call option tops you up with an hour or five hours of captions on the spot
• Deactivating your account is now offered right alongside deleting it. Your account disappears from view, but every conversation, connection, and memory stays exactly as it was
• Signing back in reactivates your account and brings everything back right where you left off
• Various fixes and polish across chat, calls, and translation
1.1.39 Aug 6
• Taking a photo during a call now works reliably and saves to your gallery. The shutter also moved out of the "..." menu into a round button you can drag to any of the four corners of the call screen
• Translations no longer turn small tone words, like Thai นะ, into extra words such as ", okay?" in the other language, the kind of addition that could read as impatient, sarcastic, or like an invented pet name. Now they just carry the tone
• A full documentation site is now live at rakkan.app/docs, with every feature explained and where to find it in the app
1.1.37 Aug 2
• A new question mark in the chat list answers anything, in your own language, and jumps you straight to the right screen
• See when your partner's message is being translated, right in the chat, so a quiet moment never looks like a deleted message
• On calls, your own words now stay on screen until you speak again, and the AI translation indicator turns green when the sentence is done
• In-call photos is now one setting for all your chats in Settings, on by default
• Muting yourself now shows a mic-off badge on your own tile, and your partner sees that you're muted, in their language
• Sending a message keeps the keyboard open, ready for the next one
• Video stays sharp after switching cameras
• Live captions now correct obvious mishearings using the conversation, with the fix visible under "show my words"
• Calling each other at the same time now connects one call instead of two colliding ones
• The dial tone now plays reliably, including with the ringer switch on silent
1.1.36 Aug 1
• Export a chat as a text file, with or without its photos and videos. Free on every plan
• Press and hold a chat in the list to peek at it without marking it read
• Replies inside a bubble now sit in a darker inset and are easier to spot
• The dial tone and the mute and unmute sounds now play even with the ringer switch on silent
• Incoming calls no longer buzz hard for a couple of seconds before the normal ring pattern
• "Show my words" in a video call now stays on between calls
• Live captions no longer stop partway through a call
• French is now available for the app and for call captions, and the in-call language list scrolls instead of running off the screen
• Emoji-only messages show once, big, instead of a doubled bubble
• Recently Deleted now has a Delete all button
1.1.35 Jul 29
French is now available as an app language.
The keyboard enter key makes a new line, and the message box grows as you type.
Videos in chat now show a preview instead of a black box.
Clearer live captions for Lao speakers, and a fix for the button that activates a chat when your plan is full.
1.1.34 Jul 25
Two new app languages: Korean and Japanese, translated end to end including live call captions.
Names written in Thai, Lao, Khmer or other scripts now also show a Latin spelling, so you always know who you are talking to.
Invite links now open directly in the app.
Fixed a bug where a message could appear twice in a chat, and another where translations could fail with an error during busy hours.
The report flag on received translations is now always visible. Tap it whenever a translation misses the mark.
Plus a cleaner message bar on small phones, and a signup check that keeps your app language and chat language in agreement.
Auto-save now covers videos too, and never touches view-once or flame-marked media. Saving a flame-marked photo or video shows a small note for both of you.
The keyboard's enter key now makes a new line and the message box grows as you type.
Clearer live captions for Lao speakers, plus a working check for updates in About app.
1.1.33 Jul 24
A camera built for couples
Selfies now save exactly how you saw them on screen, no more flipped photos. One clean camera and photo picker everywhere: chat, profile photo, contact photos, and wallpapers.
Calls that feel right
Mute and unmute now beep and vibrate so you always know your state. AI-refined captions glow golden, and a live indicator shows while the AI is still translating, so you know when to pause instead of talking over it.
Sending, smoother
Pick photos and videos together and everything sends. New app sounds for syncing and unmuting. The voice-note microphone indicator no longer lingers after you cancel.
Under the hood
The app now tells you when a new version is available. Notifications are more reliable. Translations got smarter about romantic phrasing, timing, and who said what.
1.1.31 Jul 21
Calls got a big upgrade: they now connect reliably even on slow long-distance networks, and incoming calls ring instantly in full screen, even when the app was closed.
The app also feels more alive: smoother animations everywhere, message bubbles that slide in naturally, richer haptic feedback, and pull down to refresh your chats.
New: a little heart button to let your partner know you are thinking of them, and call ringing you can mute per device while your phone still rings.
Translations got smarter too: when you explain where to find something in the app, menu names now arrive in your partner's language, matching what they see on their screen.
Plus many small fixes, including chats that sometimes would not refresh.
1.1.30 Jul 17
Calls: fixed calls that got stuck on "Connecting", and calls that connected with no sound at all. If you both call each other at the same time, you are now put straight through instead of both phones ringing out.
Translation: when Thai needs to know whether a brother or sister is older or younger, Rakkan now asks you instead of guessing.
Small fixes and polish.
1.1.29 Jul 15
A small card in your chat list now asks how Rakkan is working for you, so you can tell us in one tap when something is off. And Settings has a new Rate Rakkan button, because reviews are how other couples find us.
