New on Home: the Wire. Once a day it shows the top ESPN headline for each sport, exactly as ESPN wrote it, with a link to the full story. Under it sit today's tables: the Premier League, Manchester United's fixtures and results, and the NFL standings. Also fixed: a bug that could stop the daily story alert from switching on. The shop link now goes to our Etsy store.

No new features this week. The app itself is unchanged apart from build housekeeping you will never see. The App Store page has new screenshots, shot on a 6.7-inch phone.

Basketball has its own tab now, and it treats the NBA and the WNBA as equals. A new question lands on Mondays, the WNBA one week and the NBA the next. The Dispatch comes into the Archive tab as long reads, word for word, with its links, bold type, headings and quotes intact. Seven sports is a lot for one row. On a smaller phone or with bigger text, the tab names now shrink a little to fit rather than scroll off the edge.

Sport is back where you can see it. Home now has a row of tabs across the top: All, Football, NFL, F1, Tennis and Golf. Tap one to switch, and a gold line marks where you are. All, which we had tucked away at the bottom of a menu, now comes first. The app still remembers the last sport you picked.

A maintenance release. The app now checks a link from a notification or the home screen widget before acting on it, and loads illustrations only from thearchv.ca. Nothing has moved on screen.

The checks that verify a player's figures before they reach the app are stricter now. The two privacy manifests have been corrected as well, so they declare the message text you type into the contact form and the readings the home screen widget makes. Nothing you can see has changed. This release is all under the bonnet.

Two new things. Duels puts two players side by side and splits each row between them. Appearances, goals, caps, with the leading side in gold. Share it and the card carries the source and the date with it. The daily archive game is one player from football's past, four clues, five guesses, a new one every day. Your streak stays on the device, and it all works with no signal. Numbers come from Wikidata, and every stat says where it came from and when it was read.

Pick your sport from the new dropdown at the top of Home. Football, NFL, F1, Tennis and Golf, each with its own mark, and the app remembers where you left off. Choose a favourite club in Settings and its stories carry a small gold marker through the day's lists. The home screen widget now shows the day's lead with its illustrated portrait and follows your chosen sport. Layouts have been tightened throughout, especially at larger text sizes. Nothing overlaps the penalty kick any more. That one was ours.

The ARCHV now covers more than football. A sport row at the top of Home adds four new desks: NFL, Formula 1, Tennis and Golf. Each one answers a question fans are actually asking, one a day, checked against two independent sources before it goes up. Football stays first, unchanged and the default. Pick a sport once and the app remembers your choice.

Set the app to a language other than English and any article now carries a Translate control. It translates the title, intro and body on your phone, for free, and keeps working offline once the language has downloaded. The original is always a tap away, and the app remembers your choice, so the next article in that language opens already translated. Separately, when you finish your first article, the app asks once whether to turn on the single daily notification. Decline and it won't ask again. A few small fixes besides.

The archive learns some new tricks. Articles now carry an illustrated story card, drawn from the day's verified facts. The widget remembers the last story it fetched, so a bad connection shows yesterday's news instead of nothing. Poster tiles take a small bow as you scroll. And a season's worth of small fixes: the coin flips on a tap, images load lighter and faster, and the app speaks its six languages a little more consistently.
