MuxPad
Native tmux SSH & SFTP client
$5.99 · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
MuxPad is a native tmux terminal built from the ground up for iPad.
Unlike ordinary SSH apps that draw a single terminal screen, MuxPad runs tmux control mode (tmux -CC) over SSH and maps tmux sessions, windows, and panes directly onto a native iPad interface.
NATIVE TMUX PANES & WINDOWS
Windows become tabs and splits become real split views. Every pane has native scrollback, selection, and copy, with flow control that stays smooth under heavy output.
FULL HARDWARE KEYBOARD CONTROL
Drive tmux from an external keyboard exactly like the desktop. Control characters, Option as Meta, arrow and function keys, Home/End/Page Up/Down, the tmux prefix (Ctrl-b), and vi/emacs copy-mode keys are all sent as the correct bytes. Fine-tune with Option as Meta and Caps Lock as Ctrl/Esc. On the software keyboard, a horizontally scrolling accessory bar gives you Esc, Ctrl, arrows, the prefix, and a dismiss key.
DUAL-PANE SFTP FILE MANAGER
Put a local folder or any remote host in each of the two panes and move files by drag and drop. Transfer local-to-remote and remote-to-remote (relayed through your device). Long-press to multi-select and copy or move files in bulk. A transfer queue handles progress, resume, and conflicts.
TMUX-NATIVE SCROLLING
Two-finger and trackpad scrolling is forwarded to tmux as mouse-wheel input, so scrolling drives tmux copy-mode just like on the desktop (requires tmux mouse mode).
SESSION PERSISTENCE & CROSS-DEVICE RECONNECT
tmux sessions live on the server. Quit the app completely or switch devices and your session is still there. Reconnect manually or automatically with no loss, and pick up an iPad session on your iPhone.
iCLOUD SYNC
Hosts, reusable users, mux sessions, and groups all sync through your private iCloud (SwiftData + CloudKit) — on change and on launch. Credentials never touch CloudKit: passwords and keys stay in the Keychain (and iCloud Keychain, end-to-end encrypted), and only a reference is synced. Protect access with Face ID / Touch ID.
LIVE ACTIVITY
See your connected sessions on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Tap a session to deep-link straight back into the app. One unified activity that ends automatically when you close the app.
ENGLISH & KOREAN
The interface is in English and switches to Korean automatically on Korean devices.
ALSO INCLUDED
- Host chaining (ProxyJump) through a jump host into private networks
- ed25519 / RSA key and password authentication, known_hosts fingerprint verification (MITM warning)
- Preset and custom themes, monospaced and Nerd Font support
- Sidebar host management: inline rename, drag to reorder, groups
IMPORTANT — YOUR SERVER NEEDS TMUX
MuxPad is built on tmux control mode. The remote server you connect to must have tmux installed (detected automatically on connect); if it is not, the connection is blocked and installation guidance is shown. There is no local shell emulation.
MuxPad does not collect your data. It has no ads and no analytics or tracking SDKs. Your server credentials and activity are never sent to the developer.
more Fixed an issue on iPad where pressing the tmux prefix (Ctrl-b) followed by an arrow key didn't move between panes with a hardware keyboard.
1.5.4 2d ago
You can now customize keyboard shortcuts. Settings ▸ Terminal ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts lists every shortcut, lets you search them, and lets you press a new key to change one. Shortcuts only use ⌘ combinations, so they never clash with tmux or vim keys.
New shortcuts: ⌘N new mux, ⌘⇧N new group, ⌘I edit mux, ⌘R reconnect, ⌘E switch to the previous mux, ⌘G / ⌘⇧G next and previous terminal search result, ⌘= / ⌘− font size, ⌘⌥B right panel, ⌘⇧E files panel, ⌘K Git panel, ⌘S save, ⌘W close tab.
1.5.3 4d ago
New keyboard shortcuts on iPad. ⌘⇧L hides or shows the sidebar, ⌃Tab / ⌃⇧Tab move to the next or previous session, and ⌘⌥↓ / ⌘⌥↑ jump to the next or previous group. They work while you are typing in the terminal and are never sent to tmux or your editor.
⌘, now opens MuxPad's own settings instead of the system Settings app, even when the sidebar is hidden.
The button that brings the sidebar back moved to the top right, next to the files panel button.
1.5.2 6d ago
Fixed selected items in the sidebar being unreadable on light themes. The label was drawn white on a light selection surface, so the name of the session you had just tapped disappeared.
Text throughout the app is easier to read. Secondary labels — host names, status lines, section counts — were too faint against light backgrounds, and any theme you create now keeps app text legible against its own colors.
Terminal colors now arrive exactly as the program sent them. True color was being downgraded and then rebuilt from the theme, which turned oranges and reds into muddy browns. Tools that rely on precise color — diff viewers, syntax highlighting, agent banners — look right again.
Fixed the top line of the terminal appearing blurred. iOS draws a soft fade at the edge of scrolling content; on the terminal that fade landed on the tmux status line and washed out the text.
The keyboard bar has a new tab listing your live sessions. Tap one to switch to it without leaving the terminal.
1.5.1 Sep 21
The whole app now follows your terminal theme. The sidebar, lists, and sheets take their colors from the theme each mux uses, with the sidebar sitting one step apart from the terminal pane so the two never blend together.
A new green accent color, taken from the app icon, replaces the previous blue throughout the interface.
Selected text stays readable on every theme. Selection colors that were too dark for a light background are now adjusted automatically, so dragging over text never hides it.
Fixed SFTP delete following a symbolic link and erasing the directory it pointed to. Links are now removed as links.
Biometric protection for saved credentials is an explicit setting and is never turned off without your consent. Entries that an earlier version downgraded are listed in Settings.
Remote clipboard writes now require your permission. When enabled, copied text stays on this device and expires after two minutes.
Window names and working directories coming from the server can no longer be reinterpreted as tmux commands.
Sessions reconnect on their own after a dropped connection instead of waiting for you to return to the app.
When tmux is missing or too old on the server, the reason now reaches you instead of showing only "Disconnected".
Session status checks run in parallel, so one slow or unreachable host no longer delays badges and notifications for every other session. SFTP transfers are faster as well.
Fixed a hang that could occur when dropping several files onto the terminal at once.
Removing a mux now also closes its web, editor, and diff tabs and releases its file and port-forwarding connections. The app switcher no longer shows terminal contents.

Prompt delivery now shows whether a request was rejected before sending, delivered to tmux, or could not be confirmed. MuxPad rechecks the host, session, pane, connection generation, and agent before typing, and never retries an uncertain request automatically.
Overview has a Needs Attention view that collects input requests from every observed agent pane, including inactive panes. Tap an item to open its exact tmux window and pane; stale and disconnected observations stay separate from fresh requests.
Returning to a session now distinguishes the previous screen, screen-update confirmation, and a screen that needs checking. Use Refresh screen or Reconnect session when the update cannot be confirmed.
Quick Open is keyboard-first: press Command-P, use the arrow keys immediately, press Return to open, and Escape to close. The search field stays compact on iPad and iPhone, including while using an external keyboard.
Removing a mux now asks whether to remove only the MuxPad entry or also end the exact remote tmux session. An uncertain or failed remote end keeps the mux entry and never reconnects silently.
Fixed the blank terminal area that could remain after opening and closing the iPhone keyboard shortcuts panel.
Fixed an issue on iPhone where switching to another session could leave the "waiting for screen update" notice stuck on screen.
When the same session is open on multiple devices, only one device now alerts you — iPhone first, then iPad, then Mac. Alert titles also show which session they came from.
The overview shows live session and attention counts at a glance, with a 20-line live preview of each session.
Pick a custom icon for each mux in the sidebar.
Fixed Korean text corrupting when you moved the cursor with hardware arrow keys and kept typing.
The lock screen and Dynamic Island session status now shows your three most recent muxes in a single row of cards.

1.4.4 Sep 12
Drag files from the Files app or Finder to upload them to your server, and drag files out of muxpad to save them on your device.
Sort, refresh and select are now one tap away in file transfer. On iPhone the top rows are combined into one, leaving more room for the list.
Links printed in the terminal open when you tap them, and hyperlinks sent by the server are underlined.
Hidden files are no longer shown by default in SFTP. You can turn them back on from the menu.
tmux 3.0a and later are now supported. If your server's tmux is too old for a feature, muxpad tells you when you connect.
Fixed the terminal briefly covering the sidebar when switching between muxes on iPad.
1.4.3 Sep 8
SFTP is now faster to navigate. When a panel has no source, you can connect directly from the session list, and jump to any folder by typing its path.
tmux shortcuts now work with a hardware keyboard regardless of whether your input source is Korean or English.
1.4.2 Sep 5
Coming back to muxpad on a Mac now puts you straight into the terminal. Arrow keys and shortcuts work right away, without clicking the window first.
Switching between muxes no longer flickers. The previous screen stays until the new one has finished drawing.
1.4.1 Sep 2
The keyboard bar now covers every key a terminal needs: arrows, Home/End, F1–F24, and the full Control and Option range. Pick shortcuts like ^W or Alt-B from a list that explains what each one does.
A Windows & Panes sheet lets you switch, split, zoom and close panes by tapping. muxpad also finds tmux sessions already running on a host, so you can attach to one you started elsewhere.
Quick commands, collections and favorites sync over iCloud, so the shortcuts you set up on iPad are waiting on iPhone.
Attach from the Files app, not just Photos. Send a file from iCloud Drive or another provider to your server and get the remote path pasted in for you.
The sidebar, file transfer and overview show a host by the name you gave it instead of its address. Switch back in Settings ▸ Display.
A much more complete Korean translation, including settings, error messages and the public key install flow.
Typing responds faster on iPhone, and removing unused code-editor grammars made the app smaller.

Preview your dev server, jump anywhere with ⌘P, and ask an agent about a change — all inside MuxPad.
- Forward a port and your site opens in a tab right next to the terminal and your code. No more bouncing out to Safari.
- Press ⌘P to search your muxes, open tabs and screens. Type a few letters, press Return.
- Reading a diff? Tap Ask Agent — MuxPad fills in the file and line range, so you only type what you want done.
- Review and commit git without leaving the app: changed files, diffs, staging, branches and worktrees.
- Safe by default: force push uses --force-with-lease unless you opt in, and destructive actions ask twice.
Also fixed: the app no longer freezes when moving between the terminal and other tabs on Mac, and rotating your iPad now keeps the remote terminal at the right size.
Give it a try — we'd love to hear what you think!
1.3.0 Jul 30
Keep an eye on your AI coding agents — right from the sidebar.
- muxpad now shows the live status of Claude, Codex, Gemini, Copilot and more running in your tmux sessions: working, waiting for you, or done. No setup on the server required.
- When an agent needs your input or finishes, you see it at a glance across every session — even on your Home Screen and Lock Screen.
- Finished a Claude session? Resume it right where it left off with a single tap.
- Plus reliability and polish across reconnection and the terminal.
Give it a try — we'd love to hear what you think!
