Obolos: Expense Tracker
Any currency, travel & budget
Free · In‑App Purchases
Obolos is an expense tracker that lives on your iPhone. Your records are kept on the phone itself, with a copy in your own iCloud, so the app opens instantly and works offline — on a plane, abroad, anywhere without signal.
LOG SPENDING IN SECONDS
Four ways in, all a tap away:
• Keypad — with a calculator built in, so you can add up a bill as you type.
• Receipt — point the camera and your phone reads the total, on the device. (Premium — every account gets three free scans.)
• Text & voice — type or say "coffee 4.50, taxi 12 and groceries 38.20", check the three expenses, add them in one go. (Smart mode, Premium — every account gets five free tries.)
• Apple Pay — a one-time Shortcuts automation logs each card payment as you pay, to the right account, and asks for the category.
DROP IN A STATEMENT
Upload a bank statement as PDF, CSV or XLSX. Obolos compares it with what you have already logged and adds only what is missing — no duplicates and no bank login. (Premium — your first statement is free.)
SEE WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES
Spending by category and by day, your balance over time with upcoming payments ahead, and Insights that tell you whether this month is a normal one. Week and month views for this month and last are free; the year view, older months, forecasts and Insights are Premium.
EVERY CURRENCY, ONE TOTAL
Accounts in any of 159 currencies, each kept in its own. Totals convert to your main currency at daily rates, and a transfer between currencies is one operation at the rate you actually got.
WHAT THE TRIP REALLY COST
Set the dates and the spending inside them joins the trip: the total in the local currency and in yours, per day and by category.
AND THE REST
• Planned payments — rent, subscriptions, salary — with reminders that come from the phone itself, even offline.
• Savings goals — each goal is a real account you transfer money into.
• Balance adjustment — enter what the account really holds and Obolos records the difference.
• Monthly category budgets with alerts (Premium).
• CSV and JSON export (Premium).
• Home-screen widgets, App Lock with Face ID, and light or dark mode that follows your iPhone.
FREE
Unlimited accounts, operations, transfers, goals and trips. Keypad with calculator, three receipt scans to try, and Apple Pay logging. Planned payments and reminders. Statistics for this month and last. No ads.
PREMIUM
Unlimited receipt scanning. Smart mode: a sentence, typed or spoken, becomes several expenses, and receipts your phone can't read are read for you. Bank statement matching. Category budgets. Insights, the year view, forecasts and your full history. Export. Monthly or yearly subscription, with a free trial for new subscribers.
YOUR DATA
Your ledger lives on your iPhone and in your own iCloud. Obolos never connects to your bank and never asks for bank credentials. Sign in with Apple. When you use Smart mode or statement matching, the text, photo or file you send is read once by our server and an AI provider and is not used for anything else. No ads, no data sales.

more • More reliable iCloud sync and small fixes.
2.6.4 Oct 23
• Change your main currency and your budgets are now converted to it at the exchange rate: an AMD 200,000 limit no longer turns into $200,000.
• A sentence with several expenses is split more accurately: “Taxi 5.48 and 6.73 from Revolut. Coffee 4 euro” is now three expenses, not two.
• Plus small fixes.
2.6.3 Oct 21
• Your account balances can now sit right on the main screen, under the total: turn them on in Settings → Main screen → Accounts and tick the ones you want to see.
• Past exchange rates are now shared between iPhone and Mac through iCloud, so amounts in other currencies match on every device.
• If you haven't opened the app for a while, the days you missed now get their rates, and each expense is converted at its own day's rate.
• If Sign in with Apple fails, you now see what went wrong.
• Plus small fixes.
2.6.2 Oct 21
• Budgets are now their own thing: a name, icon and color, a week, month or year, and any categories and accounts. A budget's screen shows past periods and what went into each.
• Your category limits have become budgets, and the category editor no longer has a limit.
• Goals have moved to the Accounts screen: switch between Accounts and Goals at the top.
• A screenshot of your bank's operation list now becomes several operations at once, income and expenses included.
• Plus small fixes.
2.6.0 Oct 19
• In Budgets, categories without a limit now show how much they have cost so far, so it is easier to pick one.
• Plus small fixes.
2.5.2 Oct 18
• The text field stands out more: glass, suggestions from your frequent expenses, and while you type you see how many operations it makes and for how much.
• Pull the main screen down: a glass drop slides out from under the total; let go, and it falls into the add button.
• The add buttons, the Expense · Income · Transfer switch and the repeat button are now glass.
• The parent category is now picked above the name: you can see at once which category this one goes inside, and the picker says what goes where.
• Plus small fixes.
2.5.1 Oct 16
• Subcategories: add your own inside a category — say, "Coffee" in "Food". Their spending counts toward the parent's total and budget, and the category breakdown shows how much went to each.
• Pick a category right in the add sheet: a strip of icons, "No category" first, subcategories open in place.
• Your own category order: drag a category in Settings → Categories, and the same order applies everywhere.
• Stats: accounts, categories and period in one row of filters, and daily spending as bars in your categories' colors.
• New in Insights — "Spending pace": how this month is going compared with the last one and with a usual month.
• Plus small fixes.
2.5.0 Oct 14
• An easier start: your first account takes one tap, and tips stay out of the way.
• Items: note what a purchase was made of — you'll see them in your feed and breakdowns, and search finds them and shows how many times and how much you spent.
• A receipt now fills in the items by itself, and you can pick several receipts from Photos at once — each becomes its own expense.
• In Settings → Receipts, items can be translated into the app's language and shortened to simple names, so the same purchases add up in Stats.
• Items in Stats: a new mode shows what takes the most money inside your categories, and for each item how often and where you bought it; a category breakdown now has a "What you buy" block.
• Plus small fixes.
2.4.0 Oct 12
• Accounts get their own icons: a bank, a card, a wallet or anything from the category set.
• An archived account can be brought back.
• Changing the main currency is easier: tap any of your currencies.
• Plus small fixes.
2.3.0 Oct 9
• Statement reconcile is more accurate: each row finds the entry from its own day.
• PDF statements are read better: merchant names instead of empty lines, no duplicates.
• Exchange rates are the same on all your devices.
• Plus small fixes.
2.2.0 Oct 8
Expenses from notifications: on iOS 27 a Shortcuts automation reacts to a notification from the app you choose — a taxi, your bank, a delivery service — and Obolos logs the purchase on its own, skipping ads and status updates. Setup is in Settings; the feature is part of Obolos Premium. Any entry in the feed, transfers included, can now be repeated for today with a swipe, and a transfer between currencies shows how much arrived in the other account. Signing out no longer erases your records from the phone: they wait for you to come back, and signing in with another account asks first if something hasn't reached iCloud yet.
2.1.0 Oct 7
More reliable records on your phone and in iCloud: edits and deletions now reach your iCloud copy too, and signing out warns you if something hasn't made it there yet. Payment reminders arrive on time and only once. Expenses logged with Apple Pay, by voice or with Repeat join the trip you're on. A new account gets its categories and your country's currency right away. Search no longer closes on a long card number, and rates for less common currencies like the CFA franc are right.
2.0.4 Oct 2
New accounts and categories show up right away wherever you record operations — no more endless "add an account first" after signing up. The voice language screen closes with the back button again on every iOS version.
2.0.3 Oct 1
Restoring from a backup works again: a backup exported in this version replaces the records on your phone and your copy in iCloud. A backup from a version before your records moved to the phone is turned down plainly instead of appearing to restore.
If no records are found in iCloud after you sign in, the app opens with an empty book you can use right away instead of a loading error.
2.0.2 Sep 30
Smart mode is now properly yours to try: five sentences typed or spoken and one bank statement, free. Receipt scanning moves to Premium, with three free scans for every account. Settings shows how many are left; once they're used up, the button goes straight to what Premium adds.
Account balances in your main currency use today's rates again — after your records moved to the phone, the rate had stayed at the day of the move.
Records added offline in the previous version and sent after the move to your phone are back in the feed. If you logged spending on a plane or abroad and then updated, it's all there again.
Signing out from the expired-session screen no longer erases the records on your phone.
Smart mode now knows the accounts and categories you added after your records moved to the phone, and statements can be read for a new account too.
2.0.1 Sep 30
Your records now live on your iPhone, with a copy in your own iCloud that we cannot read. On first launch Obolos moves them over once; after that it works with no signal at all.
The keypad now has a calculator: add up a bill as you type.
Sign-in is with Apple only. If you still sign in with Google, the app will ask you to add Apple so a new phone can find your account.
New installs start with a short introduction and a choice of light or dark.
2.0.0 Sep 29
You can now add, edit and delete operations and transfers between accounts without a connection. Anything you do offline is saved at once and reaches the server when you are back online.
The app now keeps exchange rates up to date on its own.
1.13.5 Sep 22
Payment reminders now come from the phone itself. They no longer need a connection: a reminder arrives on time on a plane, or anywhere with no signal.
Chart labels are now in your language.
1.13.4 Sep 20
If you sign in with Google, the app now asks you to add Sign in with Apple. It is what will keep your records on your own device and in your iCloud. Nothing else changes: your records stay, your email stays, and the way you sign in today keeps working.
Fixed: the app could freeze for a few seconds while you were using it.
1.13.3 Sep 18
Fixed: the app could freeze and close when you opened Settings. Seen on iOS 17 and 18.
Fixed: the Sign in with Apple button stayed black on black if you switched appearance without leaving the sign-in screen.
Google sign-in has moved under "Other ways to sign in". Apple stays the main one.
Fixed: an older expense could not be added to a trip — the list only offered the three months before it started. It now offers a year.
1.13.2 Sep 17
Under the total on the main screen: what came in and what went out this month. Tap the row to open the month's spending.
Fixed: on iOS 27 the month's spending chart printed every day number in a row instead of every third. The same happened to the bars on a category screen and to the exchange-rate chart.
1.13.1 Sep 16
The statistics screen was rebuilt. It used to ask eight questions at once; now it asks three, chosen at the top: spending, balance and insights. The period, the account and the range are one line instead of three rows of controls.
Categories became a filter. Pick one or several, and the total and the daily bars show only those.
Insights, the third mode, answer "is this normal" rather than "how much". Whether this is a usual month among its neighbours: twelve columns with a dashed "usually" line show where it lands. What actually rose and fell against the previous period. Which day took the most, how few days half the spending went in, and what is left of what came in.
The balance line now counts every move, transfers and corrections included, so it agrees with the balance itself. One point per day, the line spans the card, and today is named on the axis.
At the top of the screen is the account the figures are about, and what is on it right now. Tap to choose one or several: the screen, insights included, recalculates in place.
Statements understand spending abroad. A line can carry both amounts — what the bank took and what the merchant charged: reconciling corrects the amount in the account's own currency, leaves the other alone, and matches on the amount nobody converted.
Three places where the screen was saying untrue things are fixed. The account list was named as if it held balances and showed spending — it is now "Spending by account", and the balances appear where you would look for them. A month in progress was compared against a whole previous month, so "−30%" could really mean "+21%". And the forecast has stopped claiming cents, and says plainly that everyday spending is not in it.
Also fixed: two accounts went missing from the balances list; dates on the category screen came out in English; the comparison line called the previous period "last month" even after paging a month back; the account screen did not refresh its balance right after a statement reconcile; the chart lagged when switching accounts; and a transfer created from a sentence lost the account it was going to if you opened it to check and saved.
1.13.0 Sep 15
Obolos now speaks German, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese, alongside English and Russian. It follows the language your phone is set to.
Numbers are written the way you write them. A third format, 1.234,56, joins 1 234,56 and 1,234.56, and the first launch picks the one your region uses. That also repairs a real error: an amount of 4.200 was read as 4.20 — typed by hand and imported from a statement alike.
A new icon, and a new way in. Sign-in and the first onboarding screen now stand on the same horizon, and the owl is awake.
Fixed: tapping a card in Wallet could leave the app hanging while it waited for a category list it could not fetch. The list now comes from the phone itself — instant, and it works with no signal. And if there is nothing to choose from, the expense is saved without a category rather than asking a question with no answers.
1.12.0 Sep 11
Accounts, goals and trips are no longer counted — as many as you like, free. The limits are gone, not raised. Premium stays what it is: Smart mode for receipts and dictation, statement matching, budgets, the year in stats, and export.
A trip became a bag: tickets and the hotel, bought before you left, can be put into it. The report splits into "in the trip" and "outside", and the daily average counts only the days of the trip itself.
Transfers can be dictated or typed: "moved 50,000 from the card to cash". And they have a new screen — two blocks, from and to: type one amount and the other appears at the day's rate.
The add screen was rebuilt and is quieter: compact tabs with coloured arrows, the date in one place, and the currency conversion on one line instead of a card.
Rows answer a press — in the feed, the categories, budgets, trips and settings the contents draw in, as if the card were pushed down.
Fixed: an operation on an archived account can be edited again, a category in Stats opens from anywhere on its row, and the main screen shows the feed at once instead of waiting for the server.
1.11.2 Sep 10
A trip became a bag: tickets and the hotel, bought before you left, can be put into it with "add expenses". The report splits into "in the trip" and "outside" — tap either tile to narrow the categories below — and the daily average counts only the days of the trip itself.
The trip report's categories are all in one currency now: the one the total above them is in.
Transfers can be dictated or typed: "moved 50,000 from the card to cash".
Transfers have a new screen: two blocks, from and to. Type one amount and the other appears at the day's rate, yours to override.
The add screen was rebuilt: compact tabs with coloured arrows, and the date in one place on every tab.
A trip's currency joins your currency list on its own — no more adding won separately. And the trip chip shows only while a trip is running, still to come, or a couple of days behind you.
