Japanese words, the easy way.
All 6,700+ Japanese words come with a memorable image. Look at the picture, recall the word, and check the answer. The app decides when each word comes back for review.
REMEMBER WORDS, NOT JUST RECOGNIZE THEM
Look at the image, try to recall the word, then reveal the answer. Each word has its own review schedule, shaped by your answers. Words you find difficult can return sooner; words you remember more confidently can wait longer.
START AT THE RIGHT LEVEL
No need to pick a level. Your first round adjusts to your answers and sets your starting level, and you can change it anytime on Home. Your path runs from JLPT N5 to N1.
READ WITH THE SUPPORT YOU NEED
Use hiragana, kanji with furigana, or romaji to support your reading. Definitions and example sentences help you explore how words are used. Short meanings and example translations can be shown in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Simplified or Traditional), or Thai, or you can study without them. You can also turn the Japanese definition on or off.
BUILD YOUR VOCABULARY. GROW YOUR TREE.
See your learning take shape as a growing bonsai. Pictango tracks each word's learning stage, and together your words shape your tree—a visible reflection of the vocabulary you're building.
A LITTLE JAPANESE, ANY TIME
Rounds combine new words and reviews in up to 20 questions, with progress saved after every answer.
LEARNING JAPANESE THROUGH JAPANESE?
Tap an underlined word in a Japanese definition to see its image, reading, and meaning, then return to the word you were learning.
FREE TO START
Try Pictango without creating an account. Pictango is free until 50 of the words you learn come back to you in a later review. Until then, there's no daily limit on new words. Premium unlocks all 6,700+ words with an auto-renewing subscription.
Pictango's N5–N1 ordering is its own study path, not an official JLPT syllabus. Images, definitions, and example sentences are produced with AI and quality-checked, but may contain errors.

JAPANESE DEFINITION, YOUR CHOICE
Choose whether cards show the Japanese definition.
5.2.0 1d ago
NATURAL JAPANESE AUDIO
Every word and example sentence now plays in a natural Japanese voice built into the app, so you hear clear, consistent pronunciation, even offline.
CLEARER CARDS
• Japanese definitions rewritten to be easier to read
• Better Spanish and Korean meanings, definitions, and example translations
• New images for cards that didn't match their meaning
• Example translations now appear automatically after you reveal the answer
5.1.0 Oct 25
DEFINITIONS IN ENGLISH, SPANISH OR KOREAN
Definitions can now appear in English, Spanish or Korean, in the same language as your short meaning and example translations. You can switch back to Japanese definitions anytime in Settings > Definition language. More languages are on the way.
5.0.1 Oct 19
SEE THE MEANING BEFORE YOU ANSWER
If you choose English, Spanish or Korean as your Meaning language, each card shows the word's short meaning before you reveal the answer, with the Japanese definition right below it. Tap a dotted word in the definition to look it up.
SHORT MEANINGS IN SPANISH AND KOREAN
Short meanings and example translations are now available in Spanish and Korean as well as English (Settings > Meaning language). More languages are on the way.
Also in this update:
• On the round summary, "Back to Home" is now plain text, so "Start another round" stands out.
5.0.0 Oct 16
AN EASIER FIRST CARD
New to Pictango? The two quick tips now come on a practice card before your first round, and you can skip them anytime. Your first round then starts with a regular card.
Also in this update:
• Small fixes to the tips and to the Free plan bar on Home.
4.5.1 Oct 10
FREE WORDS, NOW BASED ON WHAT YOU REMEMBER
Pictango is now free until 50 of the words you learn come back to you in a later review. Until then, there's no daily limit on new words. You can see your progress on Home and in Settings, and everyone's count starts from 0 with this update.
Also in this update:
• New to Pictango? Two quick tips on your first card show you how to study.
• Cards are easier to read, and a small colored dot marks verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
• Review cards now show each word's stage at a glance.
• Home and the round summary now show the same last 7 days.
• iCloud backup now keeps working even after you've learned thousands of words.
4.5.0 Oct 9
SHOW CARDS FULLY, EVERY TIME
The Settings option is now "Show cards fully", and it applies to every card: new words, reviews, and "One more try". Turn it on to see the word, meaning, and example from the start. A word you answer "Got it" this way still counts toward your free words, but it only becomes Established once you recall it with just the lightest hint and its reviews are weeks apart.
A BETTER MIX OF NEW WORDS
New words in a level now come from across the whole level instead of strictly easiest-first. The first few cards still come from a reviewed set of concrete everyday words.
A FULLER TREE
While many of your words are just getting started, the tree's leaf clusters no longer look patchy. Each cluster is always full, and the amount of foliage shows in the size of the cluster.
Also in this update:
• On a fresh start, or after resetting your progress, the first screen now shows a real card while you choose which language to read meanings in ("Which language for meanings?").
• One word's definition and another word's reading have been corrected, and one picture has been redrawn.
4.4.0 Oct 6
LEVEL NAMES THAT SAY WHAT THEY MEAN
Levels now have plain names: First steps, Basics, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced. When you choose a level, the matching JLPT level (N5 to N1) is still shown with each name.
SEE HOW MUCH YOU CAN LEARN FOR FREE
Settings now shows how many free words you have left, just below "Upgrade to Premium". If you open the upgrade screen before reaching the free limit, it tells you that you don't need to upgrade now and how many free words are left.
Also in this update:
• Pictures for a few words have been redrawn.
• The note about the levels and AI-assisted content is no longer a step when you first start. You can read it anytime in Settings > About > "About the levels & AI content".
4.3.0 Oct 1
MISSED WORDS COME BACK ONCE MORE
Words you answer "Not yet" now come back once more after the last card of the round, marked "One more try", so you get another go at recalling them before the round summary. These extra tries are practice: they don't change your progress or when the word comes back for review.
BIGGER PICTURES
On most iPhones, the picture on each card is now a larger square. Smaller screens keep the wider shape, so the whole card still fits.
CHOOSE YOUR LEVEL FIRST
After you pick a definition language, you go straight to "Choose your difficulty". The level check is now optional: tap "Not sure? Take a quick word check" on that screen. Once the check has started, "Quit" takes you back to choose your level yourself.
EASY WORDS TO START WITH
Each level from N5 to N1 now opens with clear, everyday words whose pictures are easy to recognize, and the sample words on "Choose your difficulty" come from this set. After those, new words come in a different order for each learner.
Also in this update:
• Resetting your learning data now takes you through the new, shorter first steps.
• Pictures for many words have been redrawn, and some definitions and example sentences have been corrected.
• A few tappable words in definitions opened the wrong entry; they now open the right one.
• On small screens or with larger text, the setup sheets always let you reach their buttons.
4.2.0 Sep 28
THE MEANING NOW SITS ON THE PICTURE
The definition has moved onto the bottom of the picture, so the picture, the meaning and the blanks for the word are all in one place while you try to recall it.
HINTS THAT MATCH HOW WELL YOU KNOW A WORD
A word you have not recalled yet shows its first sound, and longer words show a few more. Once you have recalled it, the hints get lighter as the word settles in. The blanks in the example sentence now match the hint above them.
SEE HOW FAR EACH REVIEW WORD HAS COME
Review words now show their stage and how far their review gap has grown. "Growing · 14d" means your earlier answers have stretched this word's gap to 14 days.
A LEVEL CHECK THAT WORKS LIKE YOUR CARDS
The level check now uses the same cards you study with: look at the picture and the meaning, try to recall the word, then reveal it and say whether you knew it. It also places you where more of the words are new to you.
Also in this update:
• Your first steps are shorter: pick a definition language and go. There is no guide over your first card, and the offer to turn on reminders now comes after you finish your first round, not before you start.
• Resetting your learning data now takes you through the same first steps as a new install. Your definition language and translation setting are kept.
• Revealing the answer no longer shifts the example sentence.
• Words you can tap for their meaning have a clearer dotted underline.
• The round summary now shows how many words will come back later than before, and VoiceOver reads the whole summary card.
• Your vocabulary tree no longer shows its grown shape for a moment before the growth animation plays.
4.1.0 Sep 19
Welcome to Pictango 4.0—a new way to build your Japanese vocabulary.
• One round, new words and reviews together. Learn in up to 20 questions, with progress saved after every answer.
• Recall before you reveal. Reading hints adapt as you learn, giving you a cue to help recall each word.
• Watch your vocabulary grow. Your tree reflects your words' learning stages, and a new round summary shows what you've added and how you've progressed.
Coming back after a break? Your learned words and review schedule carry over. Start your next round and keep growing.
4.0.0 Sep 15
CLEARER PICTURES FOR OVER 1,100 WORDS
Every picture is now easier to match to its word at a glance—no more guessing what it is meant to show.
CARDS SCROLL PROPERLY AT LARGER TEXT SIZES
At larger text sizes, word cards could extend past the bottom of the screen, leaving some content out of reach. Cards now scroll properly at every text size.
A CLEARER START FOR NEW LEARNERS
The quick level check now comes first, so your starting level fits you from the very first set. Choosing your own level is still one tap away.
Also in this update:
• Look up any word in a definition or example sentence while you are still trying to recall the answer — words that would give the answer away stay closed until you reveal it.
• Readings are spoken correctly again for words listed with a suffix, such as 練習 (renshuu).
• The level check no longer shows a fixed number of questions — it ends as soon as it has enough information to place you.
• New learners now start at N5 by default, instead of N4.
• A small number of words that a single image can't reliably represent — counters, dates, and bare numerals — have been removed.
3.4.0 Aug 28
YOUR REVIEWS NOW COME IN DAILY PORTIONS
Coming back after a few days off used to mean facing every overdue word at once. Now Pictango plans your reviews for you: each day brings a focused portion — about 30 words, starting with the ones closest to fading — and the rest are scheduled over the days ahead. Miss a day, and the plan simply rebalances.
Also in this update:
• Your home screen and daily reminder now show today's portion, not the whole backlog — the number you see is the number you'll actually study.
• The set summary now tells you what tomorrow really asks of you.
• Only the timing of reviews changed. Your progress and answer history stay exactly as they were.
3.3.0 Aug 20
KNOW WHERE YOU ARE IN EVERY SESSION
Each phase of a session — learning, testing, reviewing — now opens with a short intro screen, so you always know what comes next and why.
PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF
Life happens mid-set. If you leave, Pictango holds your place for 72 hours and resumes from the exact card you stopped at.
CROSSING A BAND IS NOW A MOMENT
Finishing the last level of a JLPT band used to switch you to the next one in silence. Now your set summary marks the crossing — you'll see exactly which band you just left behind and which one starts next.
Also in this update:
• During recall, the example sentence now hides the word you're being asked for — no more accidental spoilers.
• Dozens of photos and English definitions refined for accuracy.
• The level list follows you into the new band, so the level you're on is never scrolled out of sight.
• Readings no longer stack vertically on words with small kana (きょう, だいじょうぶ, シャツ).
• The dotted underline under tappable words sits clear of the characters.
• "Rate this app" in Settings now opens the App Store. It quietly did nothing before — if you've been meaning to leave a review, it works now.
3.2.0 Aug 11
This release changes how you study.
LEARN IN SETS OF 20
Instead of an endless stream, each session is now one focused set: you learn the words, test yourself, then review what's coming due. Every set has a clear finish line.
A QUICK LEVEL CHECK
New to Pictango, or not sure which level fits? Answer a handful of words and we'll suggest a starting level. You can change it at any time.
PICK YOUR LEVEL DIRECTLY
The home screen now shows your levels from N5 to N1 so you can see where you are and move to a different level whenever you want.
KNOW WHEN YOU'RE COMING BACK
After each set, Pictango tells you when your next review is due and how many words are waiting.
Also in this release: a warning before you leave a set unfinished, so you don't lose your progress by accident, an evenly sized set of words in every level, a level list that fits on smaller screens, and a number of smaller fixes.
3.1.0 Aug 5
Start learning from your first real word—no forced tutorial. New cards show the full word, meaning, example, and photo with automatic pronunciation, while learned words move to recall-based review. Sessions resume more reliably, review display can be customized, and navigation, privacy, performance, and stability have been improved.
