A smoother, quicker PaperThoughts. • Writing with Apple Pencil feels smoother, especially on pages with photos • Your entries scroll more smoothly and update faster after you write • Typing in longer typed entries keeps up better • Searching and filtering keep pace as you type

Take your journal anywhere as Markdown, get a gentle daily nudge to write, and choose the colours on your palette. • Export to Markdown. Share an entry or a whole journal for Obsidian, Notes or anywhere else that reads Markdown. Handwritten pages come along as images, and on iOS 27 as text too • A daily reminder to write, if you'd like one. Turn it on in Settings, under Reminders, and pick a time • Your ink swatches are yours. The first, marked A, writes dark on light paper and light on dark. Choose the next three in Settings, and keep a colour of your own on C • In dark mode, ink now draws in the colour you picked • The pen and the pencil share one ink colour, so switching between them never changes it • Moving between entries now says Newer and Older, with the date you're heading to • PDFs with photos are now a fraction of the size • Ink no longer shows across the gap between pages, on screen or in PDFs • Fixed a crash when moving on from a brand-new entry • Fixed a crash opening some handwritten entries on iPhone • Switching between light and dark in Settings no longer leaves a blank screen

Search your handwriting. On iOS 27, the words you write by hand can now be found, and counted. • The filter sheet now has a search field. On iOS 27 it finds words you wrote by hand, as well as titles, tags and typed pages • Open an entry from a search and it scrolls to the match, with each matching word gently highlighted. The highlight fades as soon as you start writing • On iPhone, a handwritten entry opens zoomed to the first match • Entries you've already written become searchable on their own, in the background, after you update • Insights now counts the words you've written by hand alongside your typed words • Your handwriting is read on your device. It isn't sent anywhere to be recognised On iOS 26 and earlier, search covers titles, tags and typed pages, and Insights keeps counting typed words.

Read a journal end to end, add a handful of photos at once, and put the tools away when you don't want them. • Previous and next entry sit below the page, so you can move through a journal without going back to the feed • They follow whatever you were looking at — the same journal, the same filters • Add several photos in one trip to the picker instead of one at a time • Each one lands in the order you picked it, offset so none is hidden under another • Tuck the tool strip away to the edge with a tap, and bring it back the same way. It stays how you left it • The screen no longer sleeps while an entry is open. Turn it off under Settings › Canvas if you'd rather it didn't • Heavier pen widths, with two thicker than anything before. The eraser's finest size now erases at the size it shows Fixed: • A new entry's preview no longer stays blank on its card until you relaunch the app • Scrolling near the bottom of a page no longer jumps you to the very bottom • Adding a photo tells you it's working, and no longer makes the file larger than the one you picked

Handwriting has its own tools now, and the app gets out of the way while you write. • Pen, pencil, highlighter, eraser, and lasso, in a strip beside the page • Four ink colours, highlighter shades that stay readable over your writing, and a custom picker • Four widths for every tool — the eraser too • Drag the strip to whichever side suits your hand; it stays there • Squeeze an Apple Pencil Pro to bring the tools up under the nib, and again to put them away • Double-tap swaps the eraser in and out, or returns to your last tool • The + button gathers photo library, camera, placeholder, and writing prompt • Begin a stroke and the toolbar fades out, leaving the page. It's back when you pause, tap, or squeeze — and undo stays put throughout • Prefer everything on screen? Turn off Distraction-free writing in Settings • The system picker's other inks — monoline, fountain pen, watercolour, crayon — aren't in the new palette. Anything you've drawn with them is unchanged; you just can't pick them for new writing

Typed entries can now be formatted as you write. Type **bold**, *italic*, or # for a heading and it takes shape as you go. Five heading sizes, bullet and numbered lists, strikethrough, links, and code. There's a formatting bar above the keyboard if you'd rather tap than type, with indent controls for nesting a list. Entries you've already written open clean. The formatting marks stay out of the way while you're reading — tap the page, or the pencil in the corner, when you want to change something. Feed cards and exported PDFs are clean too. On iPad, typed entries scroll as one continuous page instead of jumping page to page. And if you type more often than you draw, you can set the + button to open the keyboard by default. On iPhone, the writing on feed cards is readable again instead of shrunk to fit. A few smaller things: New entries are tagged with your location by default. You can turn that off in Settings. You can hide the photo thumbnails on one entry's card without changing it everywhere else — it's in the card's menu. If iCloud has trouble syncing, the app now tells you what actually went wrong instead of just saying you're offline.

A new way to add pages, and a round of polish. • Scroll past the bottom of your last page and the next sheet is waiting on the desk — tap it to start writing at the top of a fresh page. • The sheet greets you with a different small note each time. • Reorder your journals — press and hold Reorder in the drawer, then drag. • New entries now start in the journal you last used. • One typeface throughout, clearer buttons, and easier-to-read text across the app. • Entries settle gently into the feed when you finish writing
