chorDLE — Ear Training Game

Hear chords. Name intervals.

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

If you can hear chords, you can sit down and play with other people without having to guess what they are playing. chorDLE trains that with chord progressions taken from real songs. The songbook holds 17,023 songs, and every progression shows you the songs that use it. I–V7–vi–IV alone appears in 199, including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Little Red Corvette and With Or Without You. Learn to hear the patterns and start sitting down with music and musicians and playing along. Start with one question: major or minor. No theory needed. Tap a chord to hear it, then answer. After each hand, the chords light up on the Harmony Wheel by the job they do in the key: tonic, predominant or dominant. The Colors level adds sevenths, suspended, augmented and diminished chords, voiced the way the songs play them. Three ways to play hands-free: - Blindfold Test: hear an interval, say its name. - Sing It Back: hear it, then sing it. - Chord Trainer by voice: say "play", then call out the chords. Or play the original chorDLE: a chord plays, you pick out the intervals inside it, and you fill a line on your card. Fourteen levels take you from two-note intervals to full seventh chords. Host a room and play the chords while everyone guesses, or join with a six-character code. VoiceOver works across the Chord Trainer. Free to start, with no sign-up needed to play. Sign in with Discord or Apple to sync across devices and join the leaderboard. Made by the producers and musicians at Beat Kitchen, a real community with weekly gyms, office hours and feedback sessions. Your ears are better than you think.

VoiceOver: the blindfold mode button under each clue is now a real button and plays the chord when you activate it. Thank you to the reader who reported this. Sound fixes. After using the microphone, the game could send sound to the earpiece instead of the speaker, so the phone seemed silent unless you plugged in headphones. Sound now returns to the speaker on its own, including after a call or an alarm. Bug reports now carry the details we need to track down sound problems.
