Camera Obscura is a photographic light meter and field logbook designed specifically for black-and-white film photography. Inspired by classic handheld exposure meters, Camera Obscura combines precise reflected-light metering with the Zone System, film management, camera-specific exposure limits, framing tools, weather information, GPS data, and a complete photographic session log. Create a session before heading out and record the location, camera body, lens, film stock, weather conditions, exposure calibration, and intended film format. Camera Obscura supports 35 mm, 6×6, 6×7, and 6×9 photography, correctly accounting for the different angle of view produced by the same focal length on each format. Zone System metering The live camera view can be divided into a configurable metering grid. Tap any section to inspect and meter a specific portion of the scene. Measure shadows, midtones, and highlights independently, assign them to the desired Zone System values, and compare their luminance range before choosing the final exposure. Camera Obscura helps you evaluate: • Shadow placement • Highlight placement • Scene contrast • Exposure latitude • Selected target zone • Average and weighted exposure values • Expected tonal distribution A real-time monochrome preview provides a practical interpretation of the selected exposure. Film-oriented exposure control Once a film stock is selected, its nominal ISO becomes the reference sensitivity. Exposure Index adjustments are displayed clearly as a variation from the nominal film speed, for example: ISO 100 +½ stop ISO 400 −1 stop ISO 3200 +2 stops Exposure compensation is handled in half-stop increments, preserving a workflow that is natural for mechanical cameras and traditional film photography. Tv, Av, and Program modes Choose the exposure workflow that best matches your camera: • Tv — choose the shutter speed • Av — choose the aperture • P — automatically select a valid shutter and aperture combination The interface uses two circular control pads inspired by traditional exposure-meter dials. Camera-specific limits are respected automatically. When a selected camera has a maximum shutter speed of 1/500 second, unavailable values cannot be selected. Aperture values are likewise restricted according to the chosen lens. Camera, lens, and film database Camera Obscura includes structured catalogues for: • 35 mm cameras • Medium-format cameras • Compatible lenses • Black-and-white film stocks • Nominal ISO values • Shutter-speed ranges • Aperture ranges • Supported frame formats • Film exposure counts Custom cameras, lenses, and films can also be added manually. Photographic logbook When the exposure is ready, press the central control to save a photographic draft. Each saved frame can include: • Frame number • GPS position • Date and time • Camera and lens • Film stock and Exposure Index • Shutter speed and aperture • Exposure Value • Metered zones • Scene preview • Orientation • Weather conditions • Personal notes Sessions can contain one or more rolls, including rolls using different film stocks. Contact sheets and PDF reports Generate an elegant analog-inspired PDF logbook containing: • Session details • Camera and lens information • Film and Exposure Index • Weather and location • Exposure table • Zone readings • Contact-sheet previews • Frame notes and shooting data The report is designed to accompany negatives, development notes, darkroom prints, and archival records. Framing tools Preview the field of view for: • 35 mm • 6×6 • 6×7 • 6×9 Switch between portrait and landscape framing without rotating the iPhone. Weather and location Camera Obscura can use the iPhone location and Apple Weather data to record: • Shooting location • GPS coordinates • Temperature • Cloud coverage • Current weather conditions Camera Obscura is a deliberate, technical, and archival tool for understanding light before exposing film.
