A flat map lies about the poles. This version shows the Earth as it is.
THE GLOBE, REBUILT
- A real satellite texture instead of drawn outlines, with day, twilight and night as steps you can read.
- The twilight boundary is computed for every single pixel from the true solar elevation. No approximation, no seam, and as correct at the poles as at the equator.
THE WHOLE EARTH, EQUAL-AREA — new
- A second world view in the Equal Earth projection. It shows areas in their true proportion: how much of the Earth is in darkness right now can be read off it instead of being inflated.
- Greenland is its real size again. On Mercator a patch of polar night looks twice as large as it is.
SUN ON THIS SURFACE — new
- Set the direction a wall, a terrace or a balcony faces and see how many minutes of direct sun it gets on every day of the year.
- Using your real terrain horizon, not a smooth Earth.
- Plus the longest stretch of the year without a single ray on that surface — searched across the turn of the year, because that is exactly where it falls.
TRAVEL — new
- Light plan for jet lag: when to seek light after landing and when to avoid it, so your body clock shifts the right way.
- Which side of the plane: origin, destination and departure time give you the side the sun will be on — plus sunrises and sunsets en route, with time and position.
SIRI AND SHORTCUTS — new
- "When is sunset in Dubai?" Sun times, golden hour and moon phase now answer without opening the app — through Siri, Spotlight and the Shortcuts app.
DATE REMINDERS — new
- For the days worth waiting for: when the sun returns to the valley, when it falls along your street, when the crescent is visible again. One tap on a bell.
HORIZON ON THE WATCH — new
- The Apple Watch now uses the same terrain skyline as the phone. Sunset behind the ridge, not sunset on paper.
READABLE BY EVERYONE
- Every chart in the app now tells VoiceOver the numbers an eye reads off the curve — not a description of the picture.
- The globe and the direction dial can be operated with VoiceOver, and so can the time marker in the comparison view.
ALSO
- Three new languages: Turkish, Indonesian and Urdu — the app now speaks six
- Terrain skylines for 33,930 places inside the app, up from 423
- Place search across 33,010 cities of 15,000 people and more
- iPad in landscape: city page and time comparison in two columns instead of one with an empty half
- Fixed: around the equinox the world map was missing its twilight zones across Europe and much of the middle latitudes. The cause was an assumption that only holds while the dark region touches a pole.

The sun does not set at a time. It sets behind something.
YOUR HORIZON — new
- The real skyline of your place, with the sun's own path drawn across it. When the sun actually goes behind the ridge, how much earlier that is than the almanac says, and what it costs you in daylight.
- For 423 cities the skyline travels inside the app: no network, nothing to switch on, works in flight mode.
- For a place you add yourself it is worked out — you are asked once, and saying no costs you nothing else.
SUN AND SHADOW — new
- Your shadow on satellite imagery, to scale, in real metres. Set the height and watch how far it reaches.
- The pale fan is the ground the sun reaches at all today. Everything outside it is in shade from dawn to dusk.
YOUR SUN YEAR — new
- How many minutes of direct sun each day of the year actually brings — not the almanac's day length, but what the mountain leaves you.
- In a valley it names the two dates people wait for: when the sun leaves, and when it comes back.
THE BEST EVENING THIS WEEK — new
- Seven evenings compared rather than one predicted. High cloud catches the last light, low cloud hides it, a ridge in the west cuts it short.
SUN ALONG YOUR LINE — new
- The two days a year the setting sun lines up with your street, your terrace or your wall. Switch on the compass and point the device.
PRAYER REMINDERS — new
- Each of the five prayers on its own, with its own sound and an optional warning beforehand.
- Add your own audio file: your muezzin, your tradition, your recording.
ALSO
- Cloud cover in three layers across the day — high, middle and low, because those are three different skies
- New crescent: the next sighting from where you are, with the cloud at the best minute
- Share the day: a picture with your own skyline on it
- The city page is now grouped into four sections, and every card can be switched on or off
- Fixed: a fault in iCloud sync could delete places added on the other device. If you use an iPhone and an iPad, update both.
1.4 Aug 20
The biggest update so far.
APPLE WATCH — new
• Watch app with three screens: Now, Places, Tonight
• Complications for your watch face: the whole day as a ring or a bar, with a running countdown to the next sunrise or sunset
COCKPIT — new
• One page with everything at a glance: sun position, day length, moon, planets, twilight, weather. Full size on iPad, paged on iPhone.
NIGHT SKY — new
• How dark your sky really is, what you can see from it, and the nearest dark sky at three levels — with distance, direction and directions
• A light pollution layer on the map, computed from the 2025 VIIRS satellite composite and calibrated against naked-eye measurements
THE YEAR — new
• Day length across the year as a curve, with the day-to-day change to the second
• Analemma: the sun's figure of eight over the year
• Tidal forcing for coastal places — the astronomical pull, not water levels
WIDGETS
• Lock screen: countdown to the next event, day length, moon phase
• A world clock widget showing several cities and their days side by side
• A Control Centre button that opens your home town
PRAYER TIMES
• A new day wheel: every sector as wide as the window really is where you are
• Duha and Qiyam are shown, and can be hidden
• The Isha window now ends at the middle of the night; the makruh times are marked
ALSO
• Weather on the city page: temperature, humidity, wind
• Time comparison with shared windows and working hours per city
• Reorder and rename your places; iCloud sync can be switched off
• Zooming in brings back towns and villages, not only capitals
• Moonrise and moonset computed with high precision (topocentric, with parallax)
• Tip Jar — entirely optional. The app stays free and ad-free.
• Many smaller improvements and fixes
