Transcribe Audio Text: Kayit
Private, On-device, Interviews
Free · In‑App Purchases
Transcribe free on iPhone and iPad, in 100 languages. Nothing is sent to us: not the audio, not the transcript. Kayit Pro adds speaker separation, quotes and clips.
A recording on your iPhone or iPad, in 100 languages, becomes a transcript you can search, edit and quote. Kayit runs on-device transcription models from Apple, NVIDIA and Whisper, so nothing is sent away to be transcribed, analyzed or logged.
Transcription, editing and text export are free, with no time limit. Kayit Pro adds what is built around the words: speaker separation and quotes that carry their audio.
Built for journalists, researchers, lawyers and clinicians: anyone whose work can't leave the device it was recorded on.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• The audio and the transcript stay in Kayit's own folder on the device
• No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no servers to receive anything
• One switch keeps your library out of iCloud Backup
FREE: TRANSCRIBE
• Three on-device engines: Apple, Parakeet and Whisper, chosen per recording for the right accuracy, speed and language
• Pick the language first; an engine that can't handle it is disabled and says why
• Send a recording from any app's Share menu, including Voice Memos
• MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and most common audio and video formats; from a video Kayit takes only the audio
• Your library is in Files, under On My iPhone or On My iPad, so recordings go in and transcripts come out without Kayit in the way
• File interviews into projects, and archive a project when the story is filed
FREE: PLAY BACK AND EDIT
• The current word highlights as it plays, and the transcript scrolls to keep up
• Waveform scrubbing, 0.5x to 2x speed and 10-second skip; tap the elapsed time to jump anywhere
• Search the transcript and set the reading size
• Edit the text where you read it: fix a name, split or merge paragraphs
• Timestamps survive edits, so playback and quotes stay aligned
• Name the speakers yourself, a paragraph at a time
• Export the whole transcript as plain text, free and unlimited
KAYIT PRO: SPEAKERS
• Automatic speaker separation: each voice is labeled Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on; rename one and it applies everywhere
• Two separation methods: run it again with the other if the first drew the lines wrong, and your text corrections survive
• Save samples of your voice, and Kayit names you automatically in every interview after that
KAYIT PRO: QUOTES
• Select a passage, and Kayit saves the text, the speaker and its exact audio span
• Share a quote as text, Markdown or CSV, or with the trimmed audio clip it was taken from
KAYIT PRO: EXPORT MORE
• Export as PDF, Rich Text, Markdown, CSV or SubRip subtitles (.srt), with timestamps
• Send a whole interview to a colleague, transcript and audio in one zip, or AirDrop it to Kayit on your Mac
SUBSCRIPTION

FIRST LAUNCH
Kayit downloads each model the first time it needs it, then runs offline. Parakeet is about 500 MB and Whisper about 600 MB; Apple's engine uses a system language pack iOS downloads.
WHAT KAYIT DOES NOT DO
Kayit does not record: bring a recording in from Voice Memos, from Files or from another app. The on-device AI insights are on the Mac and the iPad, not on the iPhone. Voice samples are per device and do not sync.
REQUIREMENTS
• iPhone running iOS 26 or later
• iPad running iPadOS 26 or later, with 8 GB of memory or more for the larger models
Ratings & Reviews

Keep your interviews out of iCloud Backup. Settings has a Privacy switch that leaves your recordings, transcripts and voice samples out of the backup, so no copy of them reaches Apple. It starts off, because the backup is also how you get your library back if the phone is lost or replaced: turn it on for a story where that trade goes the other way, and export anything you cannot lose.
Export as PDF or Rich Text. A Kayit PDF opens with a title block naming the interview, who is in it and how long it runs, and every page is footed with the name and the page number, so a transcript can be filed or handed over as a document. Rich Text takes it into Pages, Word or Google Docs with the speakers and timestamps already styled.
Take your quotes out in a shape something else can read. A quote list exports as Markdown or as a CSV table, one row per quote across a whole project, and a project's quotes file is real Markdown: every passage a blockquote under the name of the interview it came from.
On iPad, leave a speaker out of the summary. Choose who the summary covers from the Summary tab: drop the interviewer and it summarizes what your source said, not the questions. Everything is still read for context, so the answers keep their meaning.
Also on iPad, Regenerate now sits in the tab you are reading, and the age beside it is that tab's. The line under the panel used to report the age of the last Newsworthy run no matter which tab you were on, so regenerating a summary appeared to do nothing.
And on iPad, a long interview gets the same summary a short one does: four to six points either way, where a long transcript used to come back with eleven. If the sections it was summarized in cannot be combined, the Summary tab says so instead of leaving you to notice the repeats.
