Gaby: Speak Spanish
Rehearse it before you live it
$14.99 · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Rehearse the conversations you'll actually have in Spain — the bar, the pharmacy, the NIE appointment. Say them out loud before you're standing there.
You've done the lessons. Then a waiter asks you a question and your mind goes blank.
Gaby is for that moment. It's a rehearsal room for the conversations you'll actually have in Spain — ordering at a tapas bar, registering at the town hall, explaining what hurts at the pharmacy. You practise them out loud, at your own pace, before you're standing there with someone waiting for an answer.
HOW IT WORKS
Pick a situation. Someone speaks to you in Spanish. You answer — out loud, into the microphone. Gaby checks what you actually said and moves the conversation on.
Every situation is playable at three levels, and they're genuinely different exercises:
• Guided — Spanish, English, and answers to choose from.
• Practice — Spanish only. Say your answer out loud, no prompts.
• Real — no text at all. You listen and reply. This one is hard.
FINISH SOMETHING, KEEP SOMETHING
Every situation you complete unlocks a Spanish painting. Every lesson you finish unlocks a photograph of a place worth going to — Granada, Cusco, Cartagena, Valparaíso.
124 of them, all yours, all offline. Sorolla, Goya, Velázquez, Ramon Casas. Pinch to zoom, switch the wall from gallery-white to gallery-dark, and save any of them to your photos as a wallpaper. No ads, no in-app purchase, nothing to unlock with money — you unlock them by learning Spanish.
WHY IT'S DIFFERENT
• Every correction is written by a person. Gaby does not generate Spanish, ever. When it tells you the accent belongs on "qué", that's because someone wrote that, not because a model guessed. It stays quiet rather than risk a confident wrong answer.
• Nothing to download. No account. No subscription. It opens and works — on a plane, in a queue, with no signal and no roaming.
• Nothing leaves your phone. Not your voice, not your answers. There is no server to send them to; the app makes no network requests at all.
• You speak, and it's checked. On-device speech recognition hears what you said. A missing accent or a different word order still passes, because being understood is the real-world win.
• Built for moving to Spain. Not a generic phrasebook: the NIE appointment, the empadronamiento, the menú del día, the neighbour on the stairs.
WHAT'S INSIDE
• 24 situations across arrival, errands, eating out, paperwork and meeting people
• Three difficulty levels each — 72 distinct runs
• 100 lessons covering the grammar and vocabulary the situations need
• 24 paintings and 100 places to collect
• Corrections that name the specific slip: a missing accent, a dropped "por favor", one wrong word
• Everything spoken aloud in a natural Spanish voice
• iPhone and iPad
YOUR LANGUAGE
Gaby's screens are in English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. The translations under each Spanish phrase are written in English and German.
HONESTLY
This is authored content, not an infinite AI. There are 24 situations today and more arrive in free updates. What you get in exchange is Spanish that's always correct, corrections that are always right, an app that opens instantly, and no subscription.
One purchase. No streaks, no daily guilt, no account.
Nos vemos en España.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Gaby has changed direction, and one thing is gone: the free-chat tab.
It didn't work. Built one way it invented Spanish that wasn't correct; built the other way it could only repeat what you'd typed. Neither was worth your time.
What replaces it is better:
• 24 guided situations — the tapas bar, the pharmacy, the NIE appointment, the town hall — each playable at three levels, from "Spanish with English and multiple choice" up to "audio only, no text at all".
• Real corrections. Inside a situation Gaby knows the expected answer, so it can name exactly what slipped: the accent on "qué", the missing "por favor", the one wrong word.
• A collection worth finishing for. Every situation unlocks a Spanish painting; every lesson unlocks a place worth visiting. 124 in all — Sorolla, Goya, Velázquez — yours offline, zoomable, saveable as wallpapers.
• No AI, and no download. The language model is gone: first launch is instant, everything works in aeroplane mode, and iPad is supported again.
• No setup. The app opens straight into the situations — no questionnaire, no account, nothing to fill in first.
• Eleven more languages. Gaby's screens now follow your iPhone's language.
Also fixed: speaking exercises with a number or a time in them could not be completed, because the speech recogniser writes "20" where the card says "veinte". Say it correctly now and it's accepted.
If you had saved conversations, they're gone — there's no chat to hold them. Sorry. It was the right call for the app.
