Reading from Short Listens now has a cleaner, consistent layout. Returning a story to the player bar is more reliable, including when using larger text. Quick taps while the player opens are less likely to activate the wrong control.

Narration now retries temporary failures and uses your iPhone’s voice when the selected AI narrator cannot continue. Switching narrators is smoother too. Minimizing the player shrinks it into the bar at the bottom of the screen. Tap the bar to bring it back. Featured Tonight returns with a full cover and description, plus controls to browse six daily picks. Story writing follows your language setting more reliably, deleting a story stops its narration, and writing choices and Short Listens have clearer presentation. Reader controls now fit more reliably at large text sizes on smaller iPhones.

Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese stories use voices installed on your iPhone. Settings stays steady while you scroll, with clearer controls and better large-text support. See when your default sleep timer applies and easily turn off Listening Mode for bedtime. Custom story covers recover from interrupted requests and share the classics’ gold frame. New Tonight's Stories use OpenAI after updated permission; your existing cover and narration choices stay as you left them.

Create bedtime stories in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian or Brazilian Portuguese. Choose Story language in Tonight’s Story or Settings. Each saved story keeps its language, with matching narration and a separate voice choice. Install a matching Apple voice for offline playback. Story creation requires Pro; the library and app menus remain English. New listeners start at Steady. Calm and slower paces are still available, and your saved pace stays unchanged.

Keep music or sounds playing after the sleep timer fades your story, with sound controls right in the reader. Short Listens and Saved have clearer layouts and easier controls, including Undo after removing a saved book. The Home mini-player is easier to read, and your generated stories have titled covers. Find your place reliably returns to the passage you choose. Find Jane Eyre and Little Women on the Romance shelf, too. Philosophy & Ideas grows to eight books, including Tao Te Ching, Walden and The Prophet. Forest Leaves joins the offline nature sounds. On Automatic, Nova, one of Nightshelf's AI narrators, can now read your first few minutes on this iPhone; then your iPhone's own voice reads on, offline. AI narrators no longer need a permission step for Nightshelf's own books, and Settings > AI features can turn them off. When Nova's minutes are done, your iPhone's voice carries on from the next paragraph, without stopping the story. With Pro, Automatic now reads Nightshelf's books in Nova, and any of the six AI narrators can read them all night. Tonight's Story, its covers and narration of stories you made still ask first, as before. If you said no to cloud narration before, AI narrators start switched off, and you can turn them on in Settings > AI features. That section is now there for everyone, with one switch for AI narrators, separate from the choice for Tonight's Story and your own stories. The lock screen now says when an AI narrator is reading. In the player, tap the AI narrator note to see how its audio is made. Tap a cover in About this book to view it full screen. Pinch or double-tap to zoom, pan around the artwork, or use the zoom and Fit buttons. Your story keeps playing while you look. The privacy policy, in Settings > Privacy, Terms & Credits, explains what is sent and to whom.

Music & sounds now names every backdrop: original piano and strings, nature recordings, and white, pink or brown noise. Siri and Search understand more of the ways people ask for a book, such as "Aesops Fables" without the apostrophe or "Frankenstein by Mary Shelley". Complete tales longer than an hour show their time in hours and minutes, and sharing one now calls it a complete tale.

Choose a quiet musical backdrop for your story: Moonlit Piano or Evening Strings. Both are included for everyone, work offline and gently fade with your sleep timer. Adjust the background volume in Music & sounds, or keep listening with no background audio. Twelve more classic books join Nightshelf, including Frankenstein, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, The Marvelous Land of Oz, The Odyssey and Meditations. Explore the new Philosophy & Ideas shelf, or enjoy Charles and Mary Lamb’s prose retellings in Tales from Shakespeare. Familiar Tales gives twelve complete stories their own cards, including Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and The Three Little Pigs. Familiar names such as Snowdrop and The Princess and the Pea now lead to the corresponding classic tale in Search and Siri. Refreshed covers put titles and author credits at the top, including updated artwork for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. About this book includes source-edition and translator details for the new classics and familiar tales. Find a passage is easier to use with larger text on smaller screens. The library now offers 93 classic volumes, 11 Nightshelf Originals and 24 complete anthology selections: 128 listening choices. Your saved books and reading positions stay in place.

Two new Nightshelf Originals: explore a remembered coastline in The Tide-Glass Observatory, or take a quiet space-ferry journey in The Garden Between Stations. A Service of Love and The Golden Touch are now available as complete standalone classic listens. Listening estimates now follow your chosen narrator across the player, chapters and recovery controls. This update also improves interruption handling and large-text layouts, adds Help & support with optional technical details, and clarifies privacy information and book descriptions. Verified Pro subscriptions now work across devices without the former device-count refusal. Devices share the subscription's service limits. The library now contains 77 classic volumes. Peter Pan, Irish Fairy Tales and Pinocchio are temporarily unavailable while we review territorial rights for those editions.

No nightly limit on cloud narration with Nightshelf Pro. The only limit is a fair-use one, there to stop automated misuse. If a narrator is interrupted, by that limit or by a dropped connection, the story carries on in your device voice and the AI narrator comes back on its own. Cloud narration also starts sooner after you press play, and very long passages, such as Mr Darcy's letter in Pride and Prejudice, are read by the AI narrators too instead of switching to the device voice. If you unlocked Nightshelf Pro by redeeming a code, the AI narrators and Tonight's Story now recognise your subscription on up to five of your devices instead of one, and reinstalling Nightshelf keeps a device recognised. When a short listen ends while your sleep timer is still running, the next tale from the same page now follows it, until the timer does. Turn it off beside the default timer in Settings. Kinder to the nightstand: the screen can now lock whenever narration pauses or a story ends, it stays dim when the sleep timer fades, and brightness you raise in Control Center is left alone. Every sleep-timer option, Chapter included, is now within reach on every iPhone. Better chapter lists: story collections get back tales that were missing from their lists, a preface is no longer numbered Chapter I, and Tanglewood Tales, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Raggedy Ann Stories and The Sketch-Book now have chapters. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer opens on its first lines again, and glossaries, endnotes and printers' notes are no longer read aloud after the last story. Find a passage now keeps up with the narrator while a story plays, and has Previous and Next buttons for stepping through the story one passage at a time. Also: the cloud narrators are labelled as AI voices where you choose them, Restore no longer reports a missing subscription when the App Store can't be reached, and opening a book on a second device no longer overwrites a newer listening place.

Nightshelf Originals: eight complete bedtime stories written with AI for Nightshelf, from gentle tales to a quiet romance and a discovery among the stars, in their own cover gallery. Short listens gathers single tales from the classics and the Originals that you can finish in one sitting, filtered by length. Keep any story in Saved for later; your saved shelf syncs through your own iCloud. Find your place: rewind or skip ahead 15 seconds, drag the chapter progress bar, or open Find a passage to preview a spot before you jump. Your play or pause state and your sleep timer carry over. Listening times are estimates at your reading speed. Natural rain, rolling thunder, a crackling fireplace, wind through pine trees, ocean waves and a flowing stream — all included for offline listening, with gentler fades and smoother sound switching. Story creation starts with an optional idea, then a mood and a length. And a gentler page: text and covers now fade softly at the edges instead of being cut off, and the Nightshelf Pro page is shorter and simpler. More reliable on-device narration, with recovery if the voice stalls and safer sleep-timer handling when playback cannot start. Reading clocks are clearer, and chapter lists and book-cover layouts have been refined.

A calmer shelf, with room to see every cover. Browse books two across, read the title and author beneath the artwork, or press and hold for a closer look. Continue listening is easier to find, and the featured book is always one you can play. Drifted off mid-story? The player keeps your place when the sleep timer fades. Press Play to continue with a fresh timer, or open Where was I? to find the last passage you remember. Playback stays within reach while you browse a category. Chapter names are easier to scan, and more books open to a complete chapter list. Reading speed and text size have their own controls. Search finds saved stories as well as classics, including names with accents. This update also improves interrupted story generation, safe saving, restored Pro access, and playback when changing books or sleep timers.

Subscribing now finishes what you started. Tap a locked book, subscribe, and Nightshelf opens that book — before, it dropped you back on the shelf with nothing open, and the shelf had quietly reordered itself under you. Subscribers stop losing the shelf when the App Store is briefly out of reach. Opening the app while signed out of the App Store, or in the first minutes after restoring a phone, could relock every paid book a second after launch, with nothing on screen to say why. Nightshelf now keeps your subscription through a blip and only believes a refusal the store repeats. It also asks, once, whether the six cloud narrators may read to you. That question used to wait for a later launch, so a new subscriber could spend a week on the on-device voice wondering where Nova had gone — and saying no did not stick, so the question came back on the next launch, and the one after that. One answer now holds. Say no and nothing you paid for goes away: the whole shelf stays open and every book still reads aloud on this phone, offline. The narrator stops reading the furniture. Pride and Prejudice spoke a hundred and sixty paragraphs that are not the novel — picture captions, and a publisher's copyright line repeated through the book; King Arthur read out three hundred margin notes; other books had an editor's preface or a publisher's list of other titles where chapter one should have been, and one story narrated a garbled word no author wrote. Those are gone, and the books open on their first real sentence. Collections name their tales again. Grimm's offered three entries for sixty tales, Robin Hood offered one, four of the coloured Fairy Books listed a fraction of theirs, and three collections listed their scholarly endnotes instead of their stories — so tapping a tale landed on a citation. Every one of those lists is the stories now. The sleep timer's Chapter setting fades at the end of the chapter you are actually in, and on a book with no chapters it no longer quietly cancels the timer you already had running. Quieter and less dark. Finishing a book no longer buzzes the phone on the pillow beside you, and the reading-speed and volume sliders no longer tick on every step of a drag. Dimming for a book and then locking the phone used to leave the whole device at eighteen percent — in Messages, in Maps, everywhere — until you noticed and dragged the slider back, because only closing the player undid it and locking the phone never closes anything. The dim now lasts exactly as long as you are in Nightshelf. Smaller repairs. Redeeming a code now confirms and closes the purchase screen instead of leaving it looking untouched. The Voice setting says plainly when cloud narration is off, and where to switch it on. A permission the phone refuses to save now says so instead of closing as if it worked. And the sleep-timer line on the purchase screen names the two longer presets it actually adds.

Every story in a collection now has its own line in the chapter list. Aesop's Fables opens as 284 separate fables; The Arabian Nights, Andersen, The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, the Lang fairy books and nine more collections now name every tale, so you can pick one story for tonight instead of scrolling one long text — and the sleep timer's Chapter setting fades at the end of the tale you chose. Seventeen books gained a full story list. Nothing in the text itself changed.

Chapter lists are back for Treasure Island, Anne of Avonlea, A Little Princess and The Colour Out of Space & Other Tales. Those books set their chapters as bare numerals, which Nightshelf did not recognise — so the chapter list was empty, Continue showed only a percentage, and the Chapter sleep timer had nothing to fade at. It does now. New App Store artwork as well, so you can see what a night with Nightshelf actually looks like before you install it.
