Speak instead of typing. Uttra turns speech into clean text entirely on your Mac, offline, using the bundled Parakeet model or an optional Whisper engine.
It is for anyone who wants to type less, and is especially helpful for people who cannot use a keyboard comfortably, or who find sustained typing slow, difficult, or tiring.
Write an email, take notes, work on a document, or fill in a browser field. Choose how each completed dictation arrives.
CHOOSE YOUR ENGINE
Parakeet TDT v3 is bundled and selected by default. It ships inside the app, needs no download, and transcribes on a clean install with the network switched off.
Whisper Large v3 Turbo and Whisper Large v3 are optional. Install either from onboarding or Models settings: Uttra downloads it once, verifies it against a signed checksum, and runs it entirely on your Mac. Turbo suits Macs below 16 GB of memory and Large v3 suits 16 GB or more, and you can switch, repair, or delete a model at any time.
Requesting a model download is the only thing Uttra uses the network for. Dictation never does.
TWO WAYS TO USE UTTRA
COPY TO CLIPBOARD is selected by default. Uttra transcribes and cleans your speech, then copies the result for you to paste with Command-V. No Text Insertion permission is required.
AUTOMATIC VOICE INPUT is optional. When you select it, Uttra sends Paste after each completed dictation so your words appear in the active editable field.
macOS displays this limited permission under Accessibility. Uttra uses it only to send Paste. It does not read your screen, inspect other apps, access text-field contents, or monitor keystrokes. If insertion is unavailable, your completed text remains on the clipboard.
BUILT FOR NATURAL SPEECH
- Hold Option-Space to talk and release to finish.
- Press Control-Shift-Space once to start and again to stop.
- Start from the menu bar or configure your own shortcuts.
- Dictate in English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese.
- Detect the language automatically or select it manually.
- Apply punctuation, capitalisation, and spacing automatically.
- Remove common filler words, repetitions, and spoken false starts.
- Say "new paragraph" or "new line" to structure your text.
MODES AND TEMPLATES
Save a dictation setup as a Voice Mode with its own language, cleanup, delivery, and shortcut. Templates insert exact saved text when you speak a phrase you chose.
TEACH UTTRA YOUR WORDS
Correct names, brands, jargon, and product terms that speech recognition finds difficult. Uttra remembers your preferred spelling for future dictations.
Your vocabulary stays locally on your Mac and can be inspected, edited, exported, or deleted from Settings.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
- Transcription and cleanup happen locally, on every engine.
- The offline Parakeet TDT v3 speech model is included.
- Optional Whisper models are downloaded only when you ask for one.
- No account, upload, cloud inference, analytics, advertising, or telemetry.
- Audio remains in memory during the active workflow and is not saved by default.
- History and diagnostics are disabled by default.
- No Input Monitoring permission.
Once your chosen model is installed, turn off Wi-Fi and Uttra continues to work. Cleanup uses deterministic rules, not a generative language model: Uttra does not summarise your speech or invent new content.

Each optional Whisper model is roughly 630 MB and is stored outside the app. Parakeet needs no extra space.
Text appears after you finish speaking, not word by word. Password fields, secure inputs, and some managed applications may reject automatic Paste, though the completed transcript remains available on the clipboard.
Parakeet TDT v3 is by NVIDIA, used under CC BY 4.0. Whisper is an open model released by OpenAI under the MIT licence, run through Argmax WhisperKit. Uttra is not affiliated with OpenAI, NVIDIA, or Argmax.

- Switch engines between dictations, repair a model that was interrupted, or delete a model and fall back to Parakeet.
WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED
- Transcription, cleanup, Voice Modes, Templates, and your vocabulary all stay on your Mac.
- Requesting a model download is the only thing Uttra uses the network for. Dictation never does.
- Clipboard delivery is still the default, and Uttra still asks for no Input Monitoring permission.
