Task for Spaces

Name each macOS Space for the work it contains. Task shows that context when you switch desktops, open Mission Control, wake your Mac, or click its menu-bar icon. Task began with a simple way of using macOS Spaces: not merely as separate desktops, but as containers for an ensemble of windows, files, terminals, documents, browser tabs, and operations that all belong to the same piece of work. That piece of work is a Task. A Task has no prescribed size. It can be micro, macro, or deliberately size-neutral: • a quick action you need to finish today • an actual Jira task, complete with its issue number • one phase inside a larger project • a temporary investigation or research thread • the name of a side project you return to over time • an entire area of work that deserves its own desktop Whatever its scale, it makes sense to name the Space that contains it. The name becomes a mental anchor: when you move between Spaces or open Mission Control, Task immediately reminds you what that desktop is for. Task keeps the model intentionally simple. Assign descriptions to Desktop 1, Desktop 2, and so on in a local plain-text file. The matching name appears as a short native splash when you change Spaces, open Mission Control, wake or unlock your Mac, or click the menu-bar icon. Task stays out of the way: • tiny native menu-bar app • plain-text, local configuration • automatic light and dark mode support • optional Start at Login • no accounts, analytics, cloud storage, or advertising Important: for Task to work correctly, turn off both “Displays have separate Spaces” and “Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use” in System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control. Task is deliberately narrow. It does not try to become a window manager, redefine the way macOS Spaces work, or replace more complete workspace utilities. Task focuses on one small operation: attach a meaningful Task name to each Space and show it exactly when context matters.
