Smart Sort Duel puts you inside a sorting algorithm and makes you race against a computer running the same one.
Two identical rows of numbered balls appear on screen. Both are scrambled the same way. Both are running Bubble Sort. An instruction card tells you exactly what the algorithm is doing right now: which two positions are being compared, what their values are, and what the correct decision is. The player taps SWAP or KEEP. The top row updates. The bottom row — the computer's — updates automatically after a fixed delay. First row to sort completely wins.
This sounds simple. It stops being simple the moment the computer gets faster.
Level one gives the computer two seconds per step. Careful reading wins easily. By level three, the computer runs at three quarters of a second per step. A player still reading every instruction carefully will watch the computer finish first. A player who has internalised Bubble Sort — who sees a pair of numbers and knows the answer before the instruction card finishes rendering — wins with room to spare. The game teaches the algorithm by making you execute it under time pressure until conscious deliberation becomes reflex.
Level four introduces Insertion Sort. The instruction card changes character. Instead of tracking a left-to-right pointer advancing through each pass, the player is now inserting one element at a time into an already-sorted left portion. SWAP moves the current element left. KEEP means the element has found its home — jump to the next unsorted element. The mechanic is the same, SWAP or KEEP, but the algorithm feels completely different. Playing both back to back makes the distinction between them visceral rather than definitional.
Level five changes everything. The player runs Insertion Sort. The computer runs Bubble Sort. The array is nearly sorted. On this specific input, Insertion Sort needs seven comparisons. Bubble Sort needs twelve. The computer steps faster than a careful human — but it does more work. The player, running the smarter algorithm for the data, finishes first without rushing. After the race, a report appears showing both step counts side by side. The lesson is not stated in a textbook sentence but demonstrated by the race result: choosing the right algorithm for your input beats executing the wrong one quickly.
