Critter Gram - Cute Messengers

Silly animal-voiced videos

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Type a short message. Pick an animal. Critter Gram turns it into a silly animal-voiced video — a little sprite critter whose mouth flaps in time with the audio — and hands it to Messages, WhatsApp, email, or anywhere else you share things. Everything is made on your phone. No account, no sign-up, no analytics, and no network call anywhere in the gram-making path. FIFTEEN CRITTERS, FIFTEEN PERSONALITIES The critter is the messenger, not the author — it never answers your message, it just carries it in its own peculiar voice. A few of them: • Chipmunk says hello, says who it's from, and relays your message exactly as typed • Rabbit listens to you ramble and deadpans the four-word version • Turtle tells you a story from his day first, grandpa-style, then gets to the message • Duck only quacks — the message rides along as a decodable quack transcript • Goldfish forgets halfway, starts again from the top, gets a little further each try, and lands it in the end • Snail says nothing at all, and hands over a written letter — sent friend-to-friend, it takes three real days to arrive …and nine more, among them an old-timey chipmunk that dresses every word in period costume, a whale that stretches each one into a long low song, and an owl who supplies two scholarly tangents before getting to the point. Most of the roster asks who the gram is from and works the name into its own voice — the old-timey chipmunk bears word from Gerald, and the turtle knew a Gerald once. THREE CRITTERS THAT DON'T TALK The duck, the woodpecker and the snail all deliver a message without ever saying it. The duck's video carries a fenced, checksummed quack transcript beside it. Paste that into the app's translator and the quacks decode straight back into words — or, if your friend has the app too, they just tap "What did it say?" on the gram itself. The woodpecker taps the whole thing out in real Morse, one peck at a time, and encloses the transcription. The app will not decode that one for you. That is the point; bring your own chart. The snail says nothing whatsoever, and hands over your message in writing, word for word, under one line of postal preamble. Sent to a friend who has the app, it arrives three days later. SEND A GRAM FOR A FEW HUNDRED BYTES When both people have the app, skip the video entirely. A gram usually travels as a few hundred bytes of text, and the recipient's phone regenerates the voice and the animation locally. Friends pair by invite only — tap the link, or type the printed code — so there is no directory and no way for a stranger to reach you. The one relay server is a courier, not a reader: grams pass through unread — they are not end-to-end encrypted, so that is a promise about how the relay behaves rather than a lock it cannot pick — and each one is deleted the moment the recipient's phone confirms it arrived, or seven days after it comes due if nobody collects it. The single exception is a gram reported for abuse, whose text is kept for 90 days so the report can be acted on. THE BIG BRAIN (OPTIONAL) The generative critters can be written by an on-device language model you can add from Settings if you want to. It is an optional download, not part of the app, and it runs entirely on your device. Without it almost every critter still works — the generative ones improvise from a built-in procedural engine instead — and only the dodo waits for the model before it will write. Either way, the writing happens on your phone. RECEIVING IS ALWAYS FREE Four critters are free to send with. The other eleven come with a single one-time roster unlock — no subscription. One of those eleven is the dodo, which also waits on the free optional model above. Receiving is never gated and never even checks: a gram from a paying friend plays on a free phone, and no critter ever asks the recipient for money.
