KaiReader – News & Vocabulary
Learn languages by reading
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Most language apps hand you sentences written for learners. KaiReader hands you this morning's newspaper.
Pick the language you're learning and each day the app collects a short stack of real articles in it — a handful, not a feed. You read one over coffee. When a word stops you, tap it: the meaning appears in your language and the word goes into your own list. Japanese shows furigana above the kanji, Chinese shows pinyin, English shows IPA, so you're never guessing at how something sounds. If a whole paragraph won't give, flip on the translation for that paragraph and move on.
Then the part most reading apps skip: say the word out loud. KaiReader listens and scores your pronunciation on the phone itself. Text-to-speech will read the article back to you as well, if you'd rather listen on the train.
The words you saved don't just sit there. They come back as flashcards on a spaced-repetition schedule — quizzes surface each one just before you'd have forgotten it. There's a streak and a "due today" count and that's about it; nothing that nags.
It's a good reader on its own, too. Clean mode strips a page down to the text. On e-ink tablets like BOOX it switches to page-turning instead of scrolling, so the screen only refreshes when you tap the edge. Add your own RSS feeds, or paste in any URL or block of text and study that instead.
Languages: English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, Vietnamese, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Indonesian and Thai.
What's free: one study language, three feeds and 100 saved words.
KaiReader Pro — monthly, yearly, or a one-time lifetime purchase — removes those limits and adds whole-sentence translation, AI readings and chat with Kai, and vocabulary backup. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
Your reading, your word list and your voice stay on the device. There's no account and no tracking. The only thing that ever leaves the phone is the passage you send when you use the optional AI features, and it isn't stored.
