Presence mode, now free for everyone. Record two short takes of yourself once — one listening, one talking — and Virtual Camera Studio uses them as your camera. It listens to your microphone and switches between them as you speak, so you look present and attentive in a call without sitting in front of the camera. Guided recording studio that checks your framing, lighting and steadiness before you record, and tells you exactly what to fix. Voice detection that tells your voice apart from background noise, instead of reacting to anything loud. Calibrate it to your room in three seconds. Mute from anywhere with Control-Command-M, from the floating panel or from the menu bar. Muted means your avatar's mouth stays shut, whatever the room does. Your face is locked into the same position across every take automatically, so switching between them is seamless. Background blur, like the one in Teams or Meet. Optional and off by default. Also in this release: the app is considerably lighter on the processor, and recordings now hold a fixed frame rate with locked exposure and white balance, so they look consistent. Everything that changed Presence mode (new, free) Presence turns a set of short clips of yourself into a live camera feed that reacts to your voice. When the microphone hears you speak, the talking take plays; when you stop, it returns to the listening take. Because both takes are real footage of you, blinking and breathing are already there — nothing is synthesised. The guided studio walks through it: A setup step with live checks for exactly one person in frame, head size and centring, lighting and camera steadiness. Each failed check states the fix. The circular guide stays visible while recording, so you know where to hold your position. Three takes: listening (25 s), talking (35 s) and an optional reaction (7 s). Lengths are fixed, because take length is a quality setting nobody can judge before recording. A review step that measures the result and warns, before you save, if the listening take moves its mouth or if the two takes look too alike to tell apart. Both problems are invisible while recording and fatal afterwards. Voice detection The microphone is analysed for the shape of the sound, not only its level: the energy in the speech band, how harmonic the spectrum is, and how far it rises above a noise floor that is learned only while you are not speaking. A fan, a passing car or a television no longer moves your mouth. A three-second calibration pins the noise floor to your room. A microphone picker: a headset microphone sits next to your mouth and separates your voice from the room far better than a webcam a metre away. The meter shows the room's noise, the trigger point and whether the current sound is voice-shaped, so the sensitivity slider is something to aim rather than guess. Audio is measured, never recorded, stored or transmitted.
