Press a hotkey, type an author, hit Return — a perfect Zotero citation lands in Scrivener. Built for dissertations, theses, and anyone who writes with references. Writing a dissertation in Scrivener with your references in Zotero? Cite Kitten is the missing link — a tiny menu-bar companion that lets you cite without ever leaving your manuscript. THE WHOLE WORKFLOW IN ONE BREATH Press Control-Option-Space. A Spotlight-style search pops up over Scrivener — without stealing your cursor. Type a few letters of an author or title, hit Return, press Cmd-V. Your citation is in the text and you're already writing the next sentence. WHAT YOU CAN INSERT • Citation markers like [@smith2020] — the standard academic workflow that keeps your manuscript re-formattable in any style, forever • Formatted in-text citations, like (Smith, 2020) • Quoted passages pulled straight from your Zotero notes, citation attached • Ready-made bibliography entries in your default style A REAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, BUILT AT COMPILE TIME When your draft is ready, compile from Scrivener and hand the file to Cite Kitten. Every marker becomes a real citation — pages, prefixes, multiple works, everything — and a complete, correctly sorted bibliography is added at the end. Choose your style at that moment: APA, MLA, Chicago author–date, or Chicago notes–bibliography with true footnotes, including properly shortened repeat notes. The formatting engine is the same one Zotero itself uses, so the output matches what your discipline expects — down to the last comma. The result is a Markdown file — and one click turns it into a Word document using the free Pandoc converter, which Cite Kitten offers to download for you. KIND TO NON-TECHNICAL WRITERS A built-in setup wizard checks that Zotero is running, fetches the free Better BibTeX plugin for you, and walks you through installing it in two clicks. If something's not set up, Cite Kitten tells you in plain English — never an error code. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Cite Kitten collects nothing. No account, no analytics, no cloud. It talks to exactly one thing: the Zotero app running on your own Mac. REQUIREMENTS • macOS 14 or later • Zotero (free, zotero.org) with the free Better BibTeX plugin — the setup wizard handles this • Scrivener, or any app you can paste into: Cite Kitten works alongside Word, Pages, Obsidian, Ulysses, and friends Written by a PhD candidate's household, for everyone who has ever alphabetized a bibliography by hand at 2am. Never again. With Love.
