TotalEdit

Code editor for Total.js

Free

Open a file and start: Total.js and jComponent completions, ten languages, Prettier built in — and Apple's own model, on your Mac, explaining what you are reading. TotalEdit is a light code editor for people who just want to open a file and change it. No project to create, no workspace, no indexing, no build step, no account. Double-click a file and you are editing it. KNOWS TOTAL.JS The part no other light editor does. TotalEdit carries the Total.js and jComponent API inside the app, so completions work with no server and no network: • The $ controller context, and the DATA and NOSQL query builders — chains resolve, so DATA.find('users'). offers where, fields and callback • RESTBuilder, schemas, actions and the framework globals, with their documentation, and the config file keys • Tangular helpers inside {{ }} • jComponent attributes inside a tag, and the bundled CSS classes and icons • Snippets for the constructs you write every day A .js file could be a Total.js 5 controller, a Total.js 4 one, or a jComponent plugin in a browser — and those share almost no API. TotalEdit works out which from the path and the content, shows it in the status bar, and lets you correct it in one click. It also knows an HTML component holds both halves: in a script total block you get server completions, and a few lines below, browser ones. APPLE'S OWN MODEL, ON YOUR MAC Ask about the file you are in and the answer comes from the model built into macOS, running on this Mac: explain this, write the documentation comment, summarise it, read it over. No key, no account, nothing leaves the machine. Where Apple Intelligence is available; the rest works the same. TEN LANGUAGES, PROPERLY Syntax highlighting built on tree-sitter for JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, YAML, Markdown, Shell, Python and Dockerfile, plus the Total.js config format and view directives inside HTML. FORMATTING WITHOUT A TOOLCHAIN Prettier is built into the app and runs offline: no Node, no npm install, nothing to set up. It follows your own tab and indent settings, and any .prettierrc next to the file. AN EDITOR THAT RESPECTS YOUR FILE The text encoding, the line endings and the trailing newline are kept exactly as they were: opening a CRLF file on a Mac does not quietly convert it. A binary file is refused rather than shown as gibberish. And when something else writes to the file you have open — a checkout, a formatter, another app — the editor picks the change up. With unsaved work of your own it says so and lets you choose which to keep. SPELLING WHERE IT BELONGS Comments and strings are checked for spelling, in the language they are written in. The code is left alone, so the red never lands on an identifier or a framework name. HELP WHERE YOU ARE LOOKING Rest the pointer on a Total.js name, or touch and hold it on iPad, and Quick Help explains it. Writing a call shows its parameters, suggestions put first what the file already uses, and templates for actions, routes and plugins fill in Tab by Tab. THE TOOLS OF A PROPER CODE EDITOR • Multiple cursors on the Mac: the next appearance of a word, all of them, or the lines above and below • Find and replace across the folder, with results grouped by file • Code folding, down to an outline of the file • Sort lines, remove duplicates, trim whitespace, change case, join lines • Line endings and tabs or spaces from the status bar, Go to Line, matching brackets • A folder sidebar — a listing, not a project — with files as tabs • Six themes, your choice of monospaced face, size and line height ON IPAD The same editor, the same completions. Files are edited where they live — iCloud Drive, Files, a checkout — not imported into the app. The strip above the keyboard shows completions while you type, and otherwise carries the characters code needs: brackets, quotes, backtick, $, =, ; and :. Hardware shortcuts match the Mac. PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION TotalEdit has no network permission at all: no account, no sync, no analytics, no telemetry. Building something larger? TotalIDE is the full Total.js IDE: projects, a bundled Node.js runtime, debugging and AI assistance.

APPLE'S OWN MODEL, ON YOUR MAC Ask about the file you are in and the answer comes from the model built into macOS, running on this Mac. Select something and ask it to explain the code, write the documentation comment, summarise it or read it over — from the Assist menu, or from the panel beside the editor, where the conversation stays. No key, no account, no server to set up, and nothing leaves the machine. Where Apple Intelligence is available; everything else works the same without it. THE FILE ON DISK A file that changes underneath you now changes in the editor. Pull a branch, run a formatter, save from another app — what you are looking at is what is on disk. With unsaved work of your own, the editor says so and offers both: keep yours, or take the file. Reopening a file you already have open shows it as it is now, instead of the copy you opened this morning. SPELLING WHERE IT BELONGS Comments and strings are checked for spelling, in the language they are written in, and the code is left alone — so the red never lands on an identifier, an abbreviation or a framework name. It is a switch in the Editor menu, on by default. ALSO The panel that explains a suggestion while you type now reads as text — the name, what it does, its parameters and an example — instead of showing the marks the documentation is written with.
