BETTER FOR BOOKS • Start from any chapter: in a book, open the ••• menu and tap Chapters. The list shows how long each chapter takes to listen to. • Books show their own cover on the shelf. • Choose how the shelf looks: a grid of covers, a list, or text only. The switch is next to the sort button. • For chapters and a cover on a book you already have, add the book again. READ IT IN TWO LANGUAGES Open a piece, choose a language, and Aloud translates it on the device — sentence beside sentence, the piece as written on one side and your language on the other, moving together as the voice reads. On a phone the two sit one under the other; on iPad and iPhone Duo they take a page each. Or show the translation on its own. Nothing is sent anywhere. The translating happens on your iPhone, and the languages come from iOS — if you have used Apple's Translate before, they are already there. Fold it while you are reading and Aloud offers to keep going aloud from the paragraph your eye was on — it never starts talking on its own. YOUR SHELF, ON EVERY DEVICE Switch on iCloud in Settings and everything you save appears on your other devices, picking up at the paragraph you stopped on. And because the words are yours, Aloud writes every piece into iCloud Drive as an ordinary text file. Open the Aloud folder in Files, on a Mac, or on iCloud.com and there they all are — readable in Notes, in TextEdit, in anything at all. Drop a text file into that folder and it turns up on your shelf. Nothing is locked in a format only this app can open. Off by default. Nothing leaves your device until you say so. NOW ON IPAD Aloud runs on iPad, with the column held at a comfortable width instead of stretched across the screen. Save on the phone, listen on the iPad, carry on where you left off.
