Dioptra: File Manager
Folder sizes, tree & space map
Only for Mac
Free
Mac
Free download, one optional purchase, no subscription. Adds what the file manager in macOS leaves out: Command-X to cut files, a sidebar folder tree and a space map.
Dioptra is a file manager for your folders and drives: folder sizes show in the list, Return opens, F2 renames, and Command-L takes a typed path. It works alongside the one built into macOS and adds what that one leaves out: Command-X to cut files, a folder tree in the sidebar, any two folders side by side in one window (Dioptra Unlock), a map of what is taking the space, and duplicates found for you.
Reclaim Space and Organize show the exact list first and change nothing until you approve it. Moves, renames and Organize can be undone, and Delete Permanently, which can't be, asks first. Dioptra itself makes no network connections.
Free to download, with one optional purchase and no subscription. Dioptra Unlock adds Dual Pane, moving everything you tick in Reclaim Space to the Trash in one step, and carrying out an Organize plan. Everything else is free.
CUT, PASTE AND A PATH YOU CAN TYPE
Cut files stay dimmed until you paste them with Command-V, or copy something else. The command bar keeps Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename and Delete in reach. Press Command-L, or click beside the breadcrumbs, and type a path: ~, a folder inside this one, or one pasted from Terminal in double quotes or with escaped spaces. The status bar adds up the size of the selected files.
FOLDER SIZES IN THE LIST
In Details view, folder sizes fill in as you browse, and sorting by Size includes them. A folder with more than 5,000 items inside waits until you choose Calculate Size.
A FOLDER TREE THAT STAYS PUT
Every folder you have given Dioptra access to, expandable in place and following where you are. It lists files too, unless you turn them off, and remembers what you had expanded. Past 400 items, a row counts the rest and opens the folder in the list.
TWO FOLDERS IN ONE TAB
Split a tab (Dioptra Unlock) and drag between the halves, or press F5 to copy and F6 to move to the other side. Option-Tab switches sides, and each side keeps its own history, view and sort.
TABS
Pin the tabs you live in. Shift-Command-T brings back a closed tab, history and all. Quit and reopen, and your window's tabs are where you left them.
JUMP TO A FOLDER, FIND A FILE
Quick Jump (Shift-Command-P) finds a folder by part of its name; press Return to go there. Type in the search field to filter the folder you are in, or search everywhere Dioptra can reach. Search matches names, not contents.
SEE WHERE THE SPACE WENT
The Space view draws your folders and files as blocks sized by what they take up, the smallest folded into one, under a line saying how full the disk is and how much of it the map covers. Reclaim Space finds files of 105 MB or more not opened or changed in a year, duplicate copies, empty folders and build folders, and shows the exact files behind each finding. "Select Safe Items" ticks only the lower-risk findings. The scan is free; moving everything you ticked to the Trash in one step needs Dioptra Unlock, and Command-Z brings it back.
RENAME HUNDREDS AT ONCE
Find and replace, prefixes, suffixes or numbering, with every new name and every collision listed before anything happens. One undo puts it all back.
ORGANIZE A MESSY FOLDER
Organize suggests folders for a folder's loose files and lists every move first. The suggestion is free; carrying it out needs Dioptra Unlock, and Command-Z undoes it one folder at a time. Needs a Mac with Apple Intelligence turned on.
GOOD TO KNOW
Dioptra sees only the folders and drives you give it access to, and macOS may still ask before it reads protected folders such as Desktop, Documents or Photos. Your desktop and the Open and Save dialogs stay as they are. A cut made in Dioptra pastes as a copy in other apps. F2, F5 and F6 may need the Fn key. Reclaim Space skips the Trash, your Library folder, .git folders, iPhone and iPad backups, and photo, music and video libraries; the space comes back when you empty the Trash. Dioptra can't shrink System Data. Requires macOS 26 or later. The interface is in English.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
This update fixes problems found after 1.3.
- Moving a file to another disk no longer removes the copy if the original disappears while it is being moved.
- Select All while a folder is still opening no longer selects the files of the folder you just left.
- Reclaim Space never offers every copy of a duplicate, no longer offers Gradle's settings folder as build output, and no longer treats files it could not read as duplicates.
- Undo no longer moves a new folder to the Trash while it still holds files you moved into it, and now puts back links whose target has moved.
- Dioptra Unlock stays on when the App Store can't be reached or you are signed out of it.
- A folder that is replaced or recreated on disk keeps updating in the list.
- The View menu in the command bar no longer offers the Space view on Home.
- Fixed a crash when duplicating a file whose name ends in a very large number.
