BACKUP THAT PROVES IT CAN RESTORE
Most backup tools tell you a transfer finished. Recilic rehearses the real thing: restore drills rebuild your files end to end — reading shards, decoding, decrypting, verifying — so you know recovery works before you need it.
HOW IT WORKS
Every backup is split into chunks, each chunk is encrypted on your Mac with ChaCha20-Poly1305, then erasure-coded into 4+2 shards. Any four shards rebuild everything — two can be lost or corrupted and your data is still whole. Checksummed, crash-safe storage detects bit rot instead of silently restoring damage.
A MESH OF MACHINES YOU OWN
Pair another Mac on your network with a single-use invite link, and Recilic spreads each chunk's shards across every machine it can reach — one shard per node wherever possible. With six nodes, any two can vanish and your backup is still whole. Nodes hold ciphertext only: no keys, no filenames, no folder structure. Hold fewer shards than the restore threshold and you hold nothing you could ever read.
IT TELLS YOU WHEN IT IS WEAKER
A mesh shrinks quietly — a machine asleep, a new address on the network, a node that stopped answering. When a backup reaches fewer nodes than the one before it, Recilic says so, and says what it cost: "survivable node losses fell from 2 to 1." Saying nothing would be easier to build and worse to trust.
STORES EACH THING ONCE
Identical content is stored once and shared by every backup that contains it. A second backup of unchanged files transfers nothing, and a backup interrupted near the end resumes from what already landed instead of starting over. Shards no backup references any more can be reclaimed.
IMMUTABLE HISTORY
Each backup is an immutable, sequence-numbered generation bound to your vault key. Yesterday's backup can't be overwritten — not by ransomware, not by a slipped finger, not by anyone.
PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
Your vault key lives in your Keychain and never leaves your Mac. What's written to disk is ciphertext fragments — no readable filenames, no folder structure, no contents.
YOU CHOOSE WHERE SHARDS LIVE
Pick the folder or drive where Recilic keeps its encrypted shards. An external drive keeps backups off your system disk. Existing shards move with the vault when you change it.
